Responsive and well managed rental community. Laing and Stone Prairie management are efficient and…read moreresponsive to concerns, and they don't "play" with their rules. It took them less than 24 hours to approve my lease application last summer. If there are any maintenance issues, they'll send repair professionals out quickly. Recently, in my apartment building, someone had been smoking in the hallways and then propped the outside doors wide open to compensate for the obnoxious odor. After I and another tenant brought this to management's attention, they dealt with it professionally, and in a timely manner. The apartment units are quiet, very clean and everything works. When I moved in last August, my apartment unit was spotless. You'd be hard pressed to find a better apartment rental community in the Sycamore/DeKalb area, and at such a decent value.

Pros: Clean, tucked back in off Rt. 64 which keeps it rather quiet, and the maintenance guy Steve…read morewas great. They keep up with the plowing quite well, and the sidewalks were usually shoveled well, too. There was an on-site pond you can fish at should you please. Cons: garages are chintzy as heck. I'm talking literally chicken wire separating the spaces inside. Anyone can cut through that and get into your stuff if they wanted to. The pool was always ice cold, even in the dead of summer. No shade at all at the pool, either! The complex is backed up by a cornfield, so come harvest time, its non-stop noises from tractors, etc, and lots and lots of dust. They also bring in the crop duster planes and they go at it for hours, starting at the break of dawn. They fly so low over the apartments that its impossible to try and sleep constantly hearing the plane dive in, spray, and climb out. Repeat that for hours. Plus I wasn't sure about the pesticides they were spraying all over the place. How healthy could that be? Stinky manure smell from the surrounding country farms. And towards the end of our multi-year stay, several undesirable neighbors moved in, including a young couple across the street who fought constantly, made noise til 3 AM, and had the cops called on them several times.

As I am looking at other apartments I have noticed as with all reviews, they are only given when things have gone wrong. I want to change that. High Meadows Apartments is under management of a wonderful woman named Marty. She is very kind and loves to have personal chats with her residents. She is very quick to take care of any issues that come up and always does it with a smile. She truly cares about everyone here. If you're looking for a smaller apartment that feels like home close to Dekalb/Sycamore and NIU, this is the place to be! Thank you for a wonderful 3 years. (And no, this review is not paid for)

I moved into a studio apartment at High Meadows Apartments early last February and the transition…read morewas very quick and simple. The income requirements on the lease agreements here are much less demanding than the six other properties I checked out in the NIU area. Ownership has recently changed and much so for the better. As soon as the new owner came in, a new fence was constructed which separates the train tracks from the apartments now giving it a rich new aesthetic in addition to greater security. Many units are at the moment being remodeled with new appliances and flooring (eventually all will be renovated). New Feldco windows are also being equipped for all units. Pros Very personable staff Location - It's on the west side edge of town, perfect for those who enjoy the country scenery, but also a stones throw from the NIU campus and downtown area. The back roads just west of the apartments are amazing for bicycle rides, walks, sunrises/sunsets, etc. I wish I could upload pictures. Rent - affordable rates for clean, quality apartments. My apartment has a brand new large refrigerator and brand new water heater. Laundry appliances are also available in each building for $1.25 wash and another $1.25 to dry. Available now are studios ($450/month) and 1 bedroom ($535/month). Water and heat included. Stove, heaters, and AC run on electric. My bill is usually $20/month WiFi - High Meadows does not at least for the moment supply free WiFi but there are networks aplenty! Pet friendly Quiet and friendly neighbors Balcony spaces available Cons Trains - I actually don't consider this a con but I'm guessing some or many people would. A number of freight trains run behind High Meadows all throughout the day and night. Sometimes every 15 minutes, sometimes not for every couple of hours. I think only some buildings are affected by this. My first night I found the noise to be so ridiculous that I couldn't help but laugh. They last up to a minute and a half and sometimes screech to a halt, but I NEVER lose any sleep over it. I got used to it immediately. Move here. -Ryan
