While living here, my husband and I had to call the police on our upstairs neighbors more than 15 times. Turns out they were both felons. No background checks are done. The landlord, Joe, wouldn't do anything to evict them so he had me write a letter explaining how bad the neighbors were. He took this letter to the lawyer who in turn made me testify at the eviction hearing making it look like it was all my fault they were getting evicted. The hallways are dingy. They promise to clean your carpet once a year but we lived there 3 times and only once was it offered. I moved all my furniture and the carpet cleaning people never showed up. When we moved out, we scrubbed that apartment. I would have eaten off the toilet, it was so clean. They refused to give us our deposit back because they claimed the apartment was filthy. I found out that they do this with everyone. They promised us a safe, quiet living environment. There were so many drug deals, loud parties, etc... They did not live up to their end of the bargain. If you move here, do NOT trust Joe.

Dekalb doesn't offer many safe Apartments to live and Sycamore doesn't offer many affordable Apartments. Having a pet or pets and searching for an Apartment can prove to be challenging. If you stumble across Oehlert Rentals, Keep Looking! Don't buy into the "waiting list" they'll have you believe they have. They hand pick their residents and they are EXTREMELY BIASED! People that have lived there or who live there believe the same is going on. It is Pet Friendly, but not Human Friendly. It's a place where all the people who own/work there are somehow related. They will discuss your personal business with others Tenants!! They will Harass you if you ask them to fix something. While I personal knew people who lived there and people who tried to live there; they all say the same - The Outside actually looks better than the inside (that's sarcasm). I took one look at the place and knew it wasn't for us. The Water Bill, Electric Bill and Gas bill are on the extreme high end of pricing. There are no bathtubs in any units - just shower stalls. From the day I started my application process, before I was even a tenant, I felt welcomed into the community. Maintenance was always on top of fixing issues, although I didn't have many in my time here. The unit was very affordable, large, clean, no issues with bugs. Even though I'm not a student, the free computer lab was so convenient! I wish I didnt have to leave, highly recommend this apartment complex!

It didn't stop there, my last lease was for a certain amount and was told a month later that I had already signed the lease, they raised my rent an additional amount ! Never had I signed a new lease stating the additional increase. So new lease began July and I left January! They stayed with my deposit plus now I have to pay an additional of $318.00. So in reality, I'm paying for February rent!! I've heard that this place never has returned their deposit. So if you are looking to rent buy yourself a money bike home or rent else where. High Meadows Apartments is under management of a wonderful woman named Marty. She is very kind and loves to have personal chats with her residents. She is very quick to take care of any issues that come up and always does it with a smile. She truly cares about everyone here. I moved into a studio apartment at High Meadows Apartments early last February and the transition…read morewas very quick and simple. The income requirements on the lease agreements here are much less demanding than the six other properties I checked out in the NIU area. Ownership has recently changed and much so for the better. As soon as the new owner came in, a new fence was constructed which separates the train tracks from the apartments now giving it a rich new aesthetic in addition to greater security. Many units are at the moment being remodeled with new appliances and flooring (eventually all will be renovated). New Feldco windows are also being equipped for all units. Pros Very personable staff Location - It's on the west side edge of town, perfect for those who enjoy the country scenery, but also a stones throw from the NIU campus and downtown area. The back roads just west of the apartments are amazing for bicycle rides, walks, sunrises/sunsets, etc. I wish I could upload pictures. Rent - affordable rates for clean, quality apartments. My apartment has a brand new large refrigerator and brand new water heater. Laundry appliances are also available in each building for $1.25 wash and another $1.25 to dry. Available now are studios ($450/month) and 1 bedroom ($535/month). Water and heat included. Stove, heaters, and AC run on electric. My bill is usually $20/month WiFi - High Meadows does not at least for the moment supply free WiFi but there are networks aplenty! Pet friendly Quiet and friendly neighbors Balcony spaces available Cons Trains - I actually don't consider this a con but I'm guessing some or many people would. A number of freight trains run behind High Meadows all throughout the day and night. Sometimes every 15 minutes, sometimes not for every couple of hours. I think only some buildings are affected by this. My first night I found the noise to be so ridiculous that I couldn't help but laugh. They last up to a minute and a half and sometimes screech to a halt, but I NEVER lose any sleep over it. I got used to it immediately. Move here. -Ryan
