We got to Death Valley and spent less than 24 hours there because we were so miserable. We packed up the car in search of another campground and drove back towards our hometown when we saw The Castaic Lake Campgrounds. We ended up spending the rest of our week there and it was absolutely gorgeous! It saved our Spring Break Vacation. There is tons to do: endless amount of hiking trails, its absolutely gorgeous all day long- from sunrise to sunset and even at night because the lake is lit up, the air is so fresh, the campgrounds are huge, and on the other side of the lake there is millions of benches, tables, and playgrounds to hangout on. I called the # that I had in my files, same # on the truck parked in front of store - no answer. Left message, no call back. Looked through my notes and found # of space we'd paid for so pulled in and set up. Seems like someone should be available for check ins. Nice park, dog friendly. No dog park, but we did walk the park. Didn't feel safe walking my small dogs in park as there was many large dogs behind small fences, one dog almost jumped over fence. Nice store, a little of everything.

This is one of the best campgrounds in the area. The drive there is about 15 miles on bumpy dirt…read moreroad. (We could not find the shortcut route) that's 5 miles. So we followed some signs from Lake Hughes Road and ended up driving on an old road that had another (dirt) road steeply ascending up a grassy mountain. We later passed a nice place called Bear Campground but it was full. We also saw a sign for Atwood Meadows Campground and turned there. The road got too washed out, but we hiked down and it was also nearly full (apparently it was a jeep and ATV group using all these sites). We finally arrived around sunset and found the campground to be fairly quiet compared to the other camps. We got a site down a mountain slightly, under a gigantic pine tree. Some large oak trees were also dotted around the site. This area also has a water spigot but it was shut off (it's overgrown with weeds and has a lot of bees). Just bring your own water because the spigot may be off. We were originally staying for 2 nights but stayed for 4 nights and went back to Atwood meadow and did a hike to a gorge (15 miles on the dot - very overgrown in one section but we found a better way back that was much less overgrown)

Came camping this Saint Patrick's day weekend, first off make sure you have a high clearance…read morevehicle because I used my Honda Accord, a slightly newer model and it was insane getting up here ...so unless you have a jeep, a truck, or huge balls then don't try it.. other than that great, great place ! Only saw one other group of campers and they seemed to be day camping so we ended up being the only ones for a night and a day.. on Saturday like we saw only two more campers but that was all, pretty nice and quiet. There was lots of wind so secure your tents well! Lots of free firewood everywhere and the pacific crest trail is super near, word of advice try your hardest to get a hold of a map. Strongly recommend if you have an off road vehicle the road here will probably be loads of fun ! Just be very careful and safe on the way up ! I do not recommend RVs or a small car like I did because it was very scary, the roads are not pavement at all.. there more of a back road feel, very uneven, and can be very dangerous. Also the toilet isn't that bad, kind of smelly but it's a toilet..There is NO running water at all so bring extra ! Mostly clean, lots of wood chips, stumps, and logs , some left over items from a previous camper but it was an axe and rope, which ended up being useful so it was okay. Grab a adventure pass for the night at the 711 in Lake Hughes only $5 a night, not sure of where else to get get them honestly.. drive safe !

When we first arrived, we pulled off at a spot that was the Lake but not the part of the lake that had the expansive water stretch. This part of the lake was so long in length that the water seemed to reach past infinity into the very moment where it all begin-- the point of creation that can be described as the bing bang or the celestial light was turn on, or something else all together. Who am I to judge how someone believes that this lake and all other molecules and atoms were created? I can appreciate beauty without knowing its first source. When we stepped into the first part of the lake we approached a fishermen. He explained that this part was the smaller part of the lake and if we drove a bit, we would see the bigger part. What he neglected to say to us, is that we had to leave the smaller part of the lake get into freeway to get to the bigger part of the lake. Eventually Denise and I figured it out but it took some wrong terms and clearer directions from a park ranger. What was grand about speaking with this fishermen was that I was able to see the carcasses of fish he had caught. I describe it as grand but in reality the moment was grim for I saw multiple fish caught in a hook, still in the water. What was once their area of splash and play now was their grave. I guess that is why people should not see how the sausage is made, for we will know that death is required to make a beautiful plate sing with a protein at the center. I digress. Once we got to the large area of the lake, where the water stretched like I said before, we were welcomed to the type of serenity that only still water can produce within humans and fowl. I wish I would have taken more pictures of the glistening beauty all around but I did take a few. For instance there is this picture where the lake begins, after a boardwalk ends, and the water continues past mountains into the sky. The water and sky did not become one but they seemed to meet at point of convergence. Furthermore, in this picture, there is a single boat, barely visible, but it is there. The boat goers were living the moment to the max. Denise and I just walked a bridge that took us to the water's edge but these folks, in the boat, were dancing with nature. The dance was slow, not tedious, and the movement was graceful, like those performed by members of a ballet company. The boat goers were the swans in the dance, they were the swans swimming calmly along. I asked a lake worker if Denise and I could get in a boat for like 10 to 15 minutes just so we can say we experienced the boat in the water and the day to the max. We were not allowed, we needed to shell 150 for an hour rental. We did not have the time to enjoy the lake to this max. I guess sometimes, people only have time to smell a rose, they do not have time to cultivate one of their very own. The place was not lush or rustic. It was more simple nature left undisturbed. It's growth and water were the kind of work that makes me understand why some people escape to the woods and to the beach. Because in places like this, where nature holds might, problems do not exist. It is only the cherished traits of nature that remain, and I guess this is why these places remain as oases or is it osai or osaieses? As Denise and I were leaving the bigger part of the lake we saw the most wonderful thing, a rock formation with a pyramid in front of its face. We discovered why this lake was named Pyramid Lake. It turns out that the detour was part of the journey all along. True about this roadtrip true about life.

She simply explained that she doesn't want to bear the burden, financial and otherwise, of caring for an older horse. Her rationale was that she's given them a good life and that their deaths are swift. If you're okay with this -- and I am obviously not -- her horses are lovely and the ride itself was good, not great. The trail is not particularly scenic and you must dodge trees nonstop.

What this place got right - The clerk who checked us in was personable and polite. - The bedding was clean and white and I saw no bed bugs when I checked. Towels were also white. - The neon sign and the lobby were cute. - Location is amazing, scenic and near great places to eat like the 1930's Halfway Cafe. - The WiFi seems to work okay. - Refrigerator, microwave and modern air conditioner were all present, and the TV works. - Shower had water pressure and the correct temperature. - I did get my $40 room deposit back the next day (although it did take a few days for it to process through my bank account). - In the battle of mosquito hawks vs mosquitoes above the bed, it looks like the hawks won, because I didn't wake up covered in welts. In the order of pretty terrible to "meh" - I got ripped off and was not given the room that I paid for. It was supposed to be the "deluxe queen room" with a larger square footage, but I was told at check-in that only this smaller room was available (room 8). - Found a filthy Kleenex in the bedside table and opened milk in the fridge. - For being in a rural location the road was noisy and busy. The fridge also intermittently made strange sounds. - Room smelled like cigarette smoke. - Bed was mushy from bad box springs. - Outlet next to the bed doesn't work at all. - Carpet is due to be removed. - Screens on windows had a half inch gap at the bottom, allowing small critters in. - Loud music that sounded like a concert and lasted until midnight and kept us awake. It was from another nearby property and not at the hotel itself. Although this was a very annoying part of our stay, I'm putting this last because it wasn't something that the hotel had anything to do with.

So the story is....Memorial day weekend I was looking for inexpensive transportation to Las Vegas and back. I considered driving but I really didn't want to deal with the traffic or the price of gas. I thought about flying but flights were all too expensive. I looked into ride sharing through Craigslist but I couldn't find anyone that was leaving and returning a similar time of day that I was. But then while searching Craigslist...I found a shuttle service offering round trip service from the LA area to Las Vegas at a great price! It was almost half the price that it would have cost if I had driven myself and paid for the gas. It was nice because I was able to book my trip quickly by phone and then conveniently pay through Paypal (using credit card), which gives security so you don't have to deal with paying in cash and you automatically get confirmation and a receipt via email. The shuttle picked me up at 9 am from Anaheim Metrolink station (one of the many pickup/dropoff locations in the LA area) after giving me a courtesy phone call an hour prior to pick up to let me know the shuttle would be arriving soon. This was very convenient! From there it was a quick 4 hour ride to Vegas with a couple other passengers. After a crazy time in Vegas, I was reminded via text message that the shuttle would be departing at 5 pm, just in case I drank too much during the weekend and forgot how I was getting home :) The return trip was equally as smooth. It departed 5 pm on Sunday night from the Vegas strip and I was able to sit back and relax and catch up on some much needed sleep. I arrived back in Anaheim around 9:30 to end a great weekend! I can't stress enough how convenient and affordable this shuttle service was. I didn't have to deal with having to drive in ridiculous Memorial Day traffic, I saved money not having to pay gas, I was able to sleep on the way home, and I had some great conversations with the drivers and fellow passengers. I would definitely recommend this shuttle to anyone who is looking for an inexpensive alternative to driving to Vegas! I will be using this service for my next Vegas trip! Also, I found out they offer transportation to different tourist destinations and even provide charter services which allow you to rent a shuttle for various group events.
