We had completed the tough Green Gardens Trail this morning, including a 15-minute stretch of downpour rain. The first thing that came to mind for me was... fish and chips, of course! That, and a couple of really good local beers on tap. We got a tip from another place in this cool little town that The Merchant was a great place to get a beer. They have a fantastic outdoor deck that sits right on the water, too. This was our second visit, so we sat inside at a table by the windows. The fish and chips here was in the top two we had during our entire trip in western Newfoundland. Very lightly battered, light golden cooked to perfection. After burning all those calories, a (true) pint of Quidi Vidi draft and a big order of fish and chips was on the money. Every one of the wait staff here was extremely nice and friendly. I believe my wife whispered to someone that it was my birthday (which it was), so I got a special little cheesecake in a glass with a candle. Then, the owner came over and encouraged the entire dining room to sing a happy birthday for me. What a treat... couldn't have been a much better place to end the day. The Merchant probably ended up being our favorite place for beers and casual food in Bonne Bay. If you're still hungry, they have a great 1950's themed ice cream parlor in the front. We did not opt for the evening of "getting screeched in" that they hold one night a week in the restaurant, but we did hear from others staying at our inn that it involved a lot of singing and drinking cod liver oil on top of the rum!

Giving 3 stars only for the hospitality. Food was below average. Veggie sandwich had 3 small pieces of bell peppers in it, that's it. My partner took a veggie burger, which had just a bun and dry patty. Food was disappointing for sure. Now, coming to the amazing points-They had free Wi-Fi. Amazing service for sure. Extremely sweet people working there. They even do screeching ceremony every week. The place you enter looks so peppy and fun, and the back restaurant has complete cottage vibes, unlike the front part. They were ready to customize the food to veg, which was sweet of them. This review is purely based on a vegetarian point of view. There are not many restaurant options in this town, so definitely worth going if you want good hospitality.

I ordered veggie chili, which came with rice and tasted hot and good. Just what I needed after eating bread for multiple days. My husband got a veggie pizza, which was freshly made and good. For the next day's hike, we also ordered egg salad sandwiches, which were decent too. Mind you, because not many restaurants here have a variety of options like these guys, and they are open till late, they are jam-packed most of the time. Wait times are crazy. We had to wait close to an hour to get our food, and even paying the bill at the end took a while. The line was huge and draining. If time is not a problem, then this is the place to be. I would surely go back to eat here, as they have plenty of options even for vegetarians.

We were seated shortly after arrival. For dinner, we ordered cod tongue dinner, house salad, BLT sandwich and mozzarella sticks. The salad was just ordinary with nothing special out of expectations. We were provided with bagged salad sauce to mix ourselves. The BLT sandwich was good. My favourite was the mozzarella sticks and the cod tongue. The moz sticks were having the right level of breading. The cheese was still connected when you tried to bite through which implies the dish was cooked with perfect temperature. The cod tongue was not served with big portion but was flavourful. There's not much service throughout the dinner. You need to really get the server's attention coz they are so busy. Expect $40+ per person for dinner here.

Dang if they aren't slightly different and every bit as good. Not just great fresh perfectly fried fish but the chips (fries) are exceptional. Try them both and make up your own mind.

She had said "its about 45 min from the hotel. My date took me there." We decided if someone is willing to take a date here we would try it. Starkly equipped and connected to a local convenience store, we ordered through the window counter. Clearly, it was the best fish and chip place we tried on western NL. There was a 'vote for the best fish and chips' contest going on at the time. When I looked for the restaurant on the list of candidates it was not listed ... clearly an overight! People (almost all locals) provided a steady, relaxed flow of customers. How much did we like it? .. well we went back 2 more times during our short 1 week in NL covering 800 km. Only downside.. no wifi or mobile service for another few km's north or south.
