Great view. The scallops for which they are best known were very tasty, but a bit chewy. The vegetables were just right- not over cooked.

Admittedly, Trout River is a dismal little village when you compare it to nearby places like Norris Point or Woody Point. The houses aren't as well-kept, the town isn't as picturesque, and the businesses are few and far between. But hiking the coastal trail at sunset-- gosh, you can't beat that. Seaside Restaurant basically has no competition, so if you're in Trout River, you'll likely end up here. It's got rustic decor, but the servers -- much like many of them in this part of Newfoundland -- wear these thin white t-shirts and black pants. It's very strange. During our trip, all of the servers were either wearing this "uniform" or they were wearing printed scrubs that were akin to what dental hygienists and nurses might wear. I only make this point because I really think that Newfoundland's servers should be allowed to wear their own clothing-- it would certainly look better. Let them show some personality! Anyway, the food was good -- like most of the restaurants we went to, it wasn't necessarily noteworthy, but even with lack of choice, I'd still recommend it. I'm a fan of chowder, and theirs was quite tasty. Good for families, good for hikers, good for people who like wind-scratched boardwalks and heartwarming sunsets. read more

Of our lunch party of four, we ordered a variety of items and shared a few appetizers. Food ranged from fair to pretty good, but not quite consistent enough to warrant a higher rating. It does boast a number of awards on it's window, so I was a bit surprised and disappointed, however, given that it's located in huber-rural Newfoundland, it is a pretty good option. The chocolate milkshakes may be worth the trip. read more

Cool atmosphere very welcoming the appetizers were good the calamari was cooked to perfection the seafood chowder was abut runny for me but still tasteful. I ordered the surf and turf they were unfortunately out of shrimp so I had cod roughed and cod fillet which both were excellent the steak first came out beyond we'll done when I sent it it back the owner who was there was kind of snarky and I asked for a new steak the second steak brought out was not even close to cooked looked just slightly seared at best the owner was again rude to my table. The service is barely a 1 star we weren't checked on at all during our meal would not recommend this restaurant read more

Perfectly done scallops, probably the best that I've ever eaten. Immensely flavourful fish cakes. Very well priced considering the location. Very helpful and super friendly staff. Our server Tara made it a lovely visit. I grew up in a west coast fishing town and I'm a decent judge of seafood. It's a certainty that we will return. read more

We were taking pictures on the boardwalk in Trout River when I noticed a few 'Where To Eat In Canada' decals on a window. We were getting hungry at the time so it must have been a sign. The restaurant itself is cool. Pictorials of fish, pictures of staff, old fishing nets hanging from the walls. A little bit tacky if you were anywhere else but right on the ocean. Our view was awesome, right on the bay watching the waves crash. Our food was not as great as the view. Skippers Scoff: cod, halibut, ocean perch. All the fish was good, perfectly done; but a little uninspired. Fish Cakes. Bland tasting. We did show up at a strange time so the restaurant was pretty much dead. At the end of our meal, the workers took their break before the supper rush started. Since we were basically done this didn't affect us, but don't agree with sending all your workers for break at the same time. I don't see how it wasn't weird for the couple who just came in - they had to be intentionally ignored while the waitress was eating in the same room. read more

Don't let the downstairs store fool you, once upstairs the restaurant really takes shape. Request a table by the windows for an excellent view of the beach. A family run restaurant with excellent service, the owner has lots of local knowledge and her daughter often entertains quests with local tunes. A must visit in the Gros Morne area! read more

I visited the Seaside in August during a two week tour of Newfoundland. The drive to Trout River is lovely as well as the setting and view from the restaurant. That's where the good times end. I was there for a light lunch, wanted no potatoes or salad, just a sample of fish - I asked for capelin, scallops and cod tongues. After a long wait, I got a tiny plate with 4 capelin, 3 cod tongues, and 6 bay scallops, which were about the size of small marbles and very rubbery. For this I was charged $30.45 !!! Stay far away from this place - it is riding on a very outworn reputation. read more

Seaside restaurant was a pretty good dinner option for us on the southern portion of Gros Morne. It is located in Trout River which is close to the Green Gardens trail which we had hiked earlier that day. Good selection of fresh fish - my salmon was very fresh and poached perfectly. The rest of the sides (i.e. choice of potatoes or rice and steamed vegetables) were nothing special, we had hoped for more for the entrees which cost $20+, however as a tourist-friendly stop with inside Gros Morne we did not expect much more. The lobster was also pretty highly priced (again, given the overall quality of the meal) at $30+ for lobster, pricing/sizes dependent on availability. If you do go, recommend the poached fish. read more

This restaurant looked very busy and was right on the waterfront in Trout River so we gave it a shot. It is quite expensive, even at lunch. We try not to get so much food that we have leftovers. Their board said they had fresh mussels, cod, salmon, and scallops. The salmon was farm raised, however. We ordered a special scallop appetizer and the fish burger of pan fried cod and a side of onion rings. The cod was nowhere as fresh and nice as that we had at Chafe's in Petty Harbour near St. John's. I think they may have battered it themselves but definitely not the onion rings which were clearly from a box. The scallops were bay size (I forgot to ask and the board did not say) and very overcooked and chewy. They were presented on a salad of greens and partridge berries which was very nice and a change from all the fried food in NL. For dessert, we tried the partridge berry pie which was the shortest pie ever. Possibly a half inch of filling! It tasted ok but the partridge berries seem to have no characteristic flavor, just tart. The server was excellent and explained all the dishes well. She even got me a tablespoon of bakeapple berries so I could taste them (they were served on cheesecake so I knew there had to be a jar of them somewhere). Very strange taste that you might need to grow up with. The restaurant had shelves of food items you could purchase. However, they were not typical of NL. Two were items easily bought at IKEA (cloudberry and lingonberry jams) and the other was maple syrup. I suggested they sell homemade berry jams of those berries that grow especially in NL. However, the server said no one offered to sell them. read more

My wife and I enjoyed a nice lunch at the Seaside Restaurant today. She had the steamed mussels and a house salad which she enjoyed. I had The Seafood Chowder with a Fishburger. Soup and Fishburger were both good but not exceptional. View of the ocean was nice. read more

Seaside Restaurant in Trout River was a huge disappointment. I am not accustomed to posting reviews and the only ones I've done in the past have been to compliment a meal or service i.e. I'm not a chronic malcontent. Our recent meal at the Seaside was so awful that it warrants warning others. We were a group of 10, not a one of us a satisfied customer. Having made reservations earlier in the day, especially due to the size of our group, we had better than average expectations having been lead astray by both Fodor's and local advertising posters touting a menu inspired by chefs, yes plural, using fresh local ingredients such as grilled shark or partridge berries "brightening our greens". The poster even mentioned having been "featured in NY Times, Boston Globe, Frommer's among others. Our experience started off fairly well having been directed upstairs on our arrival to a group of adjoining tables positioned squarely in front of a window that would allow us to take in the sunset. Aside from the harpist playing nice music in the corner, the setting was otherwise very casual. Our waitress was prompt taking our orders though she excluded several items. The grilled shark that Fodor's highlighted was nowhere to be seen. We were informed that the roast beef, halibut, haddock, lobster and snow crab that were clearly present on what appeared to be their standard menu, were not available. We were also informed that our entrees would be served with red potatoes as their usual dinner menu accompaniment. A couple of us ordered the house salad anticipating a chef inspired touch such as those partridge berries. Sadly, the only garnish to our otherwise blah salads were the packages of Kraft ranch dressing. Really? A couple of other members of our group also ordered a seafood chowder and a calamari. The calamari, the standard battered and fried version, was good and said to not be chewy. The seafood chowder on the other hand was not just bad but disgusting. There was a fish smell to the chowder and some questioned its protein origin, stating that canned versions were better than this one. With our appetizers and rolls now having been served with relative promptness, our long wait for our entrees had now begun. The restaurant was not that busy, several empty tables still present. The adjacent table, party of 6, that had been seated just prior to ours, had not only been served their entrees, they had finished them long ago. After almost an hour, we finally inquired about the delay to the unconcerned wait staff and our meals finally began to appear several minutes later. On their arrival, they were all flanked with French fries, 3 or 4 slices of steamed carrots and a floret of broccoli. Not focusing on the lack of chef inspiration but instead inquiring on why the fries instead of the red potatoes, we were informed that they had run out of the potatoes. When several of us expressed disappointment, we were then offered rice instead. Upon additional prodding, baked potatoes, which were not routinely offered as part of their evening menu (that was a first), were then offered to two members of our group that had expressed dislike with both the fries and the rice. Then came the biggest disappointment of the evening which was the taste of our entrees. Their signature scallops were tiny in both size and portion. The cod filet was flavorless although the pricier cod cheeks pricey were slightly better. The turbot unremarkable. And the vegetarian stir fry was served over egg noodles (another first). Needless to say our experience did not match the billing of this establishment. We promptly left, mildly expressing our disappointment much to the bewilderment of the kitchen/downstairs staff. The next day, inquiring about recommendations for other local eateries, when we mentioned our negative experience at the Seaside, it was verified by this resident stating, "I know of several people who have recently had bad experiences".
