Dang if they aren't slightly different and every bit as good. Not just great fresh perfectly fried fish but the chips (fries) are exceptional. Try them both and make up your own mind.

She had said "its about 45 min from the hotel. My date took me there." We decided if someone is willing to take a date here we would try it. Starkly equipped and connected to a local convenience store, we ordered through the window counter. Clearly, it was the best fish and chip place we tried on western NL. There was a 'vote for the best fish and chips' contest going on at the time. When I looked for the restaurant on the list of candidates it was not listed ... clearly an overight! People (almost all locals) provided a steady, relaxed flow of customers. How much did we like it? .. well we went back 2 more times during our short 1 week in NL covering 800 km. Only downside.. no wifi or mobile service for another few km's north or south.

We were provided with bagged salad sauce to mix ourselves. The BLT sandwich was good. My favourite was the mozzarella sticks and the cod tongue. The moz sticks were having the right level of breading. The cheese was still connected when you tried to bite through which implies the dish was cooked with perfect temperature. The cod tongue was not served with big portion but was flavourful. There's not much service throughout the dinner. You need to really get the server's attention coz they are so busy. Expect $40+ per person for dinner here.

(Well, maybe I sorta minded ;)) My husband ordered the 2-piece (8oz) cod and chips and he was impressed with the light, perfectly crispy batter coating the freshly cod. My nephew ate the Newfie poutine (ground beef added to it) which got a big thumbs up. Our toddler happily scavenged from all of our plates. However, I didn't like the fires at all. It was so flavoureless. We also tried their mozzarella sticks given they ran out of cod tongues that day. It was average. Overall, the food here is served quickly and they definitely offer great value for money.

The cod was as fresh as could be, not over battered and definitely not greasy. We also all had salads to start, before the fried stuff, and it was fresh and plentiful with a choice of dressings (it's a fish and chips place folks, so it was still iceberg lettuce and commercial dressing you can get at a convenience store - but it was very nice). Definitely worth stopping in on if you're passing through the park on the way up to l'Anse aux Meadows, for example.
