I was so looking forward to having lunch at one of my very favorite restaurants in Lawrenceville only to be so disappointed. I know that they've recently opened another place in Winder, so I'm guessing that is where the owners are spending their time. Upon walking in there was a totally different vibe... not the usual warm welcoming one I've been use too. The woman at the counter wasn't really rude just very matter of fact yet the feeling I got wasn't inviting at all. It was 12:30 and not one table was taken except one lady and a child that I think belonged to the woman at the counter. The menu had changed so I asked if they still had the lunch special to which I was told they no longer had a lunch menu but they had a 1pc catfish with one side and drink. That's what I've always gotten as the lunch special and I was pleasantly surprised to see it had only went up like .90. I ordered my catfish blackened with red beans n rice along with tea. Asked what sauce and I chose tarter sauce and looked for the hot sauce that was usually out on another counter but it wasn't there so I asked for it to be included. My drink use to be half sweet tea and half unsweetened but no more unsweetened tea made there and the sweet is very sweet. My friend and I were dining in and said so when asked yet our food was still in to go containers. As you can tell by my picture the catfish piece was very small compared to what I use to receive but with today's prices I understand....BUT what use to be the BEST RED BEANS N RICE were awful! First they were separated and NO SEASONING at all! For the first time ever I had to go on the hunt for salt n pepper and guess what? No salt n pepper packets. No ketchup for my friends fries which also had changed and not for the better. Then the hushpuppies were tiny grease balls. While we were there only 2 other people picked up to go orders and one other person came in to eat. During lunch it use to be packed! I asked if the owners (delightful people) were at this location or the new one the woman replied both but there's no way either were there because of the food quality and over all atmosphere. This restaurant uses quite a bit of salt in their food, but they have good flavor nonetheless. The service is usually friendly as well. I've had mixed experiences here and it really depends on the day you go. I've been a couple of times for takeout only and the food is really good. The fried shrimp is very tasty and there sauce and sides are also really good. The last time I went, the service was very very very slow and it was not busy at all. We waited over 30 minutes for a takeout order. When we got home, we noticed that this extra sauce that we paid for was not included in the bag. We would've hoped that considering how long it took to get our order at least it would be correct especially considering we paid extra for the sauce. Overall, if I'm really craving seafood, I would go back considering it's close to my home but probably would not be my first go to. This food is off the chain on point, does not miss every single time, is my grandma in the back helping y'all because baby let me tell you something, I don't know how you keep your prices the way you do, but never change them, and for the love of all things good in this world do not change your recipe, because it just doesn't miss. On a whim I tried this place. Called in a to go order, drove back which took about 30 minutes, when I tell you the food was still hot after a 30 minute drive, what? Okay, but here is what really sets this place apart, not only can you pick how you want your fish, grilled or fried, you can pick how you want it prepared. That's right, you want Garlic Parm, they got it. You want lemon pepper, they got it. You want sweet chili, I'll stop you there, they got it. I've never had fish so good, with so many options. It would literally take you days just to go through the whiting, and a couple of weeks to get through the tilapia and catfish. And the sauces, don't get me started. I could bathe in the sweet vidalia sauce, it's that good. Their tag is, "Catch the Flavors." Their tag is 100 and 5% accurate. Second time we have ordered takeout. I have to agree about the over salted fries. They forgot to give us hush puppies for our order. The fish was either overcooked or the grease had not been changed. I ordered whiting and it was a dark brown. Paid almost 50.00 for 2 fish baskets with coleslaw, an order of fries, and an order of waffle fries. They brought the food out, my husband was standing there, they never told him or anyone whose food it was until about 15 minutes later so the food was basically cold. Not ordering from there again. The food is great. The wait was not. I ordered in the store and was waiting on my order. I tried to order something on the menu on the counter (6 wings) and the girl at the register says "we don't have that option". Normally I would give them a 5 stars all across the board however I called and was put on hold for over 11 minutes however when I got there no one was in the building. I was still on hold and I showed the employee Makia B. my phone to show that I was still on hold trying to call in an order. She went and picked up the phone and just shrugged her shoulders. She never apologized. . She just said what do you want to order. The phone rang while I was trying to finally order and she picked up the phone said hello and then hung up on someone. Excellent service! Very friendly! The fish & shrimp were very fresh and cooked perfectly. The hush puppies were good but a lot smaller than I'm used to. I am so glad we stumbled upon this place by accident while looking for another restaurant, because this place is bomb! It's tucked away in a shopping center next to a Jamaican spot but it definitely stands out. The parking is right in front of the restaurant and there appears to be an ample amount. The menu is posted up on the wall but is a little bit small to read so they have a printed version at the counter when you order. So as always my hungry self ordered the most. I got the two-piece whiting meal with sweet corn hush puppies,red beans and rice and corn. My mom was with me and she got the 6 piece lemon pepper wings meal with potato salad and red beans and rice. Then we split a banana pudding. The whiting was extremely good seasoned well and tasted even better with some malt vinegar and tartar sauce (if that's your thing). The hush puppies were so sweet, golden, and delicious, the red beans and rice were super delicious with whole kidney beans & equal parts of beans and rice with chunks of meat in it (may be pork FYI). The potato salad was sooo good as well. Also my mom said the wings were very delicious and crunchy fried perfectly & had a great standout lemon pepper taste. Everything I ate was extremely delicious, homemade, and fresh. Want to know how I know?
