Patches and Stitches is a classic quilt shop for a town the size of Huntsville. It is neither the…read morelargest nor the smallest quilt fabric store I have ever been in, but it has a niche, caters to its customers, and serves them well. They have a good Civil War reproduction fabric area, and they usually have a pretty decent 1930s-repro area, too. Much of the store is devoted to classic fabrics: blenders, overall prints, batiks. They have a small selection of wide backing fabrics. They also have a lot of cross-stitching materials, which take up half the store. I know nothing of cross-stitching, so someone else should speak about that part of their merchandise. Pros: they've got a little bit of everything. Tools, stencils, fat quarters, thread, fabric. Cons: they've only got a little bit of everything. They're not going to carry specific designers or get in the designer du jour you're craving. If your tastes run to Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, Denyse Schmidt etc., they are not going to have your fabrics -- you will need to look outside for them. Good, reputable basics, though? They've got them, and the fabrics from the bigger companies are the higher-quality versions that only dedicated quilt shops carry. You'll pay more, but you'll get the GOOD stuff. They do have a person who takes in longarm quilting projects (for a fee, obviously) so if you're looking for a quilter, they can point you to one. Sales are rare, maybe once or twice a year. They announce it to their mailing list first. Typically it's a good discount but purchases have a 1/2-yard minimum to get the discount, so be prepared. They have classes, but I've never taken one. They don't have a ton of thread, which is disappointing to me. My guess is that there's just not much of a market for it. It's a good shop. I try to make as many purchases there as possible, to help keep them in business, but I recognize there are some things they aren't going to carry and will never carry, so I get those elsewhere.

That is discrimination! Why should he be singled out. Do I need to announce that I am ADHD when I go into a store. That is also breaking the HIPPA law to even ask that. It is no one's business. His Mother, Dad and myself were all there if she saw him do something he shouldn't have she should have asked us to stop him. But instead she scolded him in front of us and embarrassed him. When a child with autism is reprimanded they lash out and have a melt down and that is what we dealt with the rest of the day. All because he was walking through her isles that were so close together you couldn't get your arm through them. He didn't damage anything, she stated herself. He was just trying to follow what the grownups were doing. I struggled to walk through her cluttered isles myself. We had out of town company with us and they had so been looking forward to going to this store. We will never go again. It doesn't take much to be nice and considerate to people. Most people just have no patience with special needs kids. I have owned and operated a retail business for almost 30 years and never have I ever been rude to a customer and especially not a special needs child. She is also not wheelchair accessible and the isles are so close together even if you got a wheelchair in the store you could not move around. My suggestion would be to shop elsewhere. I do not recommend this store. The public needs to learn how to deal with special needs children. After all they are born 1in ever 50 births it could be you grandchild next.

The reason I'm not a big fan, is, as long as this store has been around, my experience service-wise has been that the people who work there are not overly friendly, and borderline "uppity." Also, parking is cramped, and it is caddy corner to the Huntsville hospital emergency room entrance which makes accessing it a bit difficult. From their website they offer: "casual, fine crystal, silver, table linens, gourmet cookware, serving accessories, party papers, candles, candies, and confections," if you are in the market for these items. Next to these two stickers was a third sticker that stated "Complete set of 4 $160". As I checked out at the front of the store, I wanted to make sure that the vendor was getting paid what they were owed. I didn't bargain down or argue for the $40, I made sure the cashier knew that there were two conflicting prices and that I didn't want to shortchange the vendor. Upon first asking if the $40 was the correct price, she stated loud and rudely, "IT SAYS SPECIAL FOR FOURTY DOLLARS." This was all she spoke while making direct and antagonizing eye contact. I acknowledged her words gently and kindly, that I indeed saw that sticker but also noticed that there was a conflicting price tag NEXT to the $40 one. The more expensive price was not crossed out or written over, they were listed next to each other. What I didn't say, but was hoping to clarify, was whether the store was okay being on the hook for the extra $120 if they were only going to charge me $40. The cashier simply repeated the same words, louder this time, and very condescending in her tone and manner, "IT SAYS SPECIAL FOR FOURTY DOLLARS" and pointed to the sticker to make her point even clearer. She said nothing else. I paid without further comment. As she bagged up the four prints, she included the additional document with the price stickers on it. I inquired if she wanted to keep the ADDITIONAL document with the price tags and booth label (for her records), making sure she didn't slip it in by mistake. Her tone, still very loud and now even more condescending, resounded as she said, "I WON'T BE REMOVING THOSE STICKERS BECAUSE THEY WILL DAMAGE THE PAPER." I wasn't asking her for a lesson on how adhesive works, I was simply trying to allow her the opportunity to keep the documentation for the vendor and the store to prove that she charged me for the discounted price. I've grown up in antique stores. My grandmother and mother both currently own/have owned their own antique establishments, so I'm familiar with the protocol. Maybe their protocol is different. My bad. I did not respond further and took the bag gently from her hands. It could have been the simplest and most pleasant interaction though. "Oh I see that there are two conflicting prices here. Let me call the vendor and verify that this one is correct." Or perhaps "We are told to take the lowest price listed on each product, so I can guarantee this is the correct price. Thanks for the concern though! I appreciate you looking out for the vendor!" Something, ANYTHING, more pleasant in terms of tone and word choice, would have been a better experience. I have also been in her shoes. I have worked in marketing and customer service for the past 20 years. I have worked a front desk, many, many times. I have been a cashier. I have been the rep who answered tweets at 11pm where a customer needed toilet paper sent to their hotel room. I know what it's like to deal with belligerent , arrogant people, with people who actively try to make your life a living hell because you work behind a desk, behind a screen, behind a uniform. That was NOT my intention, and that's what I think stung the most. In being kind, in being thorough, I was treated with contempt. Maybe she was having a bad day. Maybe I caught her in a moment where she had just dealt with someone difficult and assumed I was the same. There are a number of reasons why this transaction was so unpleasant. "Give her some grace!", the masses might cry. And I might agree with you. Normally, I would. But she was old enough to know better. The job she holds is not one that is difficult to execute, nor difficult to execute PROPERLY. Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill. Maybe I shouldn't have let this seemingly small incident make such a huge impact. Or maybe, just maybe, this could've turned out so drastically different if this young woman had exercised the bare minimum and just been kind to me in return.

Well, I previously would have recommended this place. I got two missed phone calls and a voicemail…read morefrom them, asking to call back. I had a quilt bound way back in May 2025. I knew I didn't have anything that I was waiting on, so was suprised to be getting a call. The lady on the phone said that they had been audited, and the invoice from my quilt binding back in May showed that they hadn't charged me for the fabric I bought for the binding (?). They said I had a balance of $5 and some cents- I was in disbelief, that they would call me, the customer, MONTHS later, and ask for a payment of $5...... If their employee messed something up and didn't charge enough or didn't ring up the fabric....... that is NOT on the customer to rectify months later. Honestly I was so flabbergasted I did pay it- the person on the phone said she was "just doing her job" because she had been asked to call BY THE OWNER. So the owner thinks it's on the customer to pay an outstanding fee for an employee's mistake, again..... MONTHS later after the fact? She reiterated that they had been audited-- I mean...... bummer for them but again as the customer that is absolutely NOT my problem. And certainly it isn't my responsibility to rectify. Astounded that such a small business would even attempt to bother a customer about this months later. Such a sour taste in my mouth. There are multiple other quilting stores around, and I have had quilts bound and/or quilted at other places. I'll probably never go back because I can't even believe the audacity of a shop owner. They should have eaten the cost or taken it out of the employee's wages (whoever messed up). Anything would have been acceptable rather than bothering a customer months after the fact. This would never happen at a larger retail store- and I probably should have just refused altogether. If I had not been so shocked I probably would have. Would they come to my house and demand payment? The entire situation is so bizarre. Beware to customers across the board when this is how you're treated.
