It has a definite hole-in-the-wall aesthetic, but as soon as we stepped inside and smelled the food, we knew we were in the right place. We ordered the veggie combo for two people. Of note, it did not include shiro (ground chickpea curry), so we had to add that for an extra $10. We also wanted to add ful fava, so we could try every single veggie option, but they were out that day. The food took awhile to come out, so we were ravenous by the time it arrived, but it was worth the wait. We loved every bite. Unlike many other Eritrean/Ethiopian places we have tried, the Red Sea did not put excessive salt or oil on the food, just enough for it to be really tasty. In particular, we loved the lentil/okra dish, which we had never tried before. Just delicious. We also asked for the food to be extra spicy, so they brought us a little side of extra berbere powder. It did the trick! The injera was very fluffy and fresh. Of note, they sometimes close early if they have a rush earlier in the day, so keep that in mind before you go.

The interior is small but has a decent amount of booth seating. The service is also very warm. Came here for dinner on a cold day and ordered a veggie sampler and beef tibsi for two people. Everything was exceptionally tasty and well-seasoned. The tibsi was served together with the veggie sampler (in the middle of the injera), and the whole thing was plenty of food for two. The bill came out to about $60 after tax and tip, which I think is moderately priced for Portland given the portion size, and we left happy! We'll certainly be back.

I am saddened to learn that they are closing next year, but that just means that I need to eat there more while she is still open! The Mac & Cheese has a great Caribbean spice, certainly a top contender for M&C and the Chicken Curry is equally tasty. I wish that there was a larger dining room, it's quiet, but I expect that plenty of people come in for take-out, since the meals easily make it home without much loss of flavor. We each got two sides, with various combinations of plantains, collard greens, and beans. The collard greens were especially excellent, cooked to the right level of tender and well seasoned. They were out of a few things so if you are craving something very specific maybe call ahead, but it's all good so you really can't go wrong. If ordering the same again, I might get the rice or fufu with the stew next time, and I definitely want to try the Jamaican rum cake.

I have gone +40 mins after opening and the door was locked. I could see a woman unloading food but she did not acknowledge me. I have called +2 hours after opening and no answer. When I did finally manage to get ahold of someone, the food was cold and they changed the plantain style. Now they use large plantains that are not sweet. They are just dry and flavorless. I was ok with this since the portion size was still good and the other food still had good flavor. The last straw was when I ordered my food in person and I told guy #1 exactly what I wanted. I even got extra oxtail gravy for the rice. I waited about 15 mins for my food and I watched guy #1 finish packing my food. Well guy #2 was obviously upset with the amount of food guy #1 made for me so he made a scene. Even though he was speaking another language I could tell he was talking about me since he kept gesturing to me. They put my original food in a storage cabinet and guy #2 proceeded to remake my food. He put 1 oxtail, no gravy, and added a small amount of sides. This took another 10 mins. I was amazed at what I was watching. Guy #2 hands me the new food and smiles at me. Like I didn't just witnessed what happened. I try to support small places like this especially in this region but after that experience... I will likely never go back. The site is transformed inside from the driving range outside and has fantastic food and drink. We got a specialty coffee and mint tea to start. My coffee was good, but overshadowed by an artistic and extra special mint drink. So desperately trying to reproduce at home, this is not to miss. Fresh mint and wonderfully steeped with sugar to smooth. From there- wings were on our table. As with everyone's input we devoured these as a special recipe. Charred perfectly and spiced with extra lemon and zip. As advertised- spectacular! Lastly we got a salad and then the lamb with cous cous. So tender, great sweetness to contrast the somewhat spicy wings. I have never been to Morocco but felt like I did for this meal. Definitely cooked with tradition in mind and expertly to get fall off the bone brilliance. Service was exemplary for a holiday weekend.
