A+++++! I was adamant that I wanted to eat dinner here and we called to make a reservation for same day for dinner. It's unassuming outside but beautiful and elegant on the inside. Lovely decor, even the bathroom is stunning! Clearly a lot of care has been taken on the inside and it shows. A small, intimate experience, but comfy tables and chairs and great staff. The menu is delightful and has a range of usual favorites - Satay, Cucumber Salad, Pad Thai, etc. But, they also have some other dishes I hadn't seen and have a sauce flight option that was cute to get with your fried chicken. We chose a Papaya salad, chicken wings, crying tiger, and a chicken red curry. The papaya salad was stellar. It was a bit spicy but not too much and was so fresh and delicious, I will dream about it! My husband loved the wings and literally devoured all of them. His steak was perfectly cooked and delicious as well. My curry was also perfect - loaded with fresh veggies of which the eggplant was my favorite. Our server, Anna, was wonderful and sweet and very good with our toddler. They had a nice dessert menu with some delicious items available and a specialty coconut cake I really wanted but hubs wanted to get soft serve elsewhere with our toddler. My top dishes are the fried chicken and garlic rice, pad thai (add the extra veggies), and the cashew shrimp or chicken. The waitress was very unpersonable. Very inattentive. She wouldnt say hi. She would walk up. Ask what you want and then leave the moment you said your dish. Didnt give you time to say which protien you'd like in your dish. Wouldn't ask what kind of skewer you wanted for your lunch combo. So my Togo lunch is missing its side... since she walked off before taking my full order. She would also spend most of her time out of view so you couldn't flag her down if you needed anything. However. The food here is amazing! Best pad ka pow iv ever had. And when I do get my skewer... its soooo delicious! We tried this place for the first time and I'm glad we did. Everything we had was delicious! We both had their lunch special. My father-in-law chose fried egg rolls and a chicken pad Thai. Mine was a papaya salad and shrimp red curry with purple sticky rice. We also had a side order of lemongrass beef skewers. Service was excellent. Servings are not huge which I very much appreciated. Prices were good. My only gripe was how small the place is, there's really no privacy so if you're looking for a spacious restaurant with privacy, this is not it. Maybe some of the best Thai food I've eaten in the States, served in a cozy site with a bistro vibe. I desperately want to keep Mitr a secret, kept close to my chest. But it deserves to be shared with the general public and beyond. In the most unassuming spot, you'll find Mitr Ping Yang Thai Kitchen along a busy road, no frills on the exterior. Step inside and you'll be welcomed to a surprisingly stylish, yet simple interior. The lunch menu is a force to be reckoned with. I was scooping out the garlicky lime and mayo dipping sauce to smother on our fresh rolls, portioned nicely for a shareable appetizer. The tom kha, with shrimp, was so hearty and comforting on a cold day in Portland. We enjoyed the chicken satay, seasoned well and was flavorful and juicy. I'm eyeing the crispy pork belly and sauce flight for next time. The menu is perhaps mirrors more traditional thai dishes that you might find in a thai household, rather than the thai restaurant experience we're all probably more familiar with, and it's what sets Mitr apart from anywhere else. The Pad Kra Pow was delicious and had a subtle heat (at least for me, I can't say the same for my husband), and it's best enjoyed, in my opinion, with a crispy pork belly. The servers seem irritated with the people in the entryway waiting for food (I had a confirmation of a pickup time and still arrived 10 minutes later). Second time at Mitr Ping and it was great again. Hubby and I had an early dinner there tonight and tried several things. We sat in the cubby corner which was warm and cozy! Egg rolls & "Thai tacos"(Kratong Thong) starters both fresh and very good. Hubby ordered the Grilled Chicken Combo - good sauces and papaya salad. Cute little place! We had a wonderful lunch here yesterday and all the food was delicious! The lunch special is definitely the way to go. The portions were insane (in a good way) for a lunch special and I had enough to bring home for two more meals. When you walk into Mitr, you walk into very delicious territory! My husband and I knew that it was more sensible to get take out, as it was at the tail end of a big snow storm, but the promise of hot tea in lovely tea cups on a brutally cold day, drew us in. When we arrived, there were many seats available, which I am certain was a silver lining of the snow storm as Mitr has been pretty packed since opening. On the other hand, there are not a lot of tables, but those within are cozy and comfortable. Not only did hot tea come right away, but there were options. We chose Jasmine and continued getting hot water refills throughout our meal! Here's what we ordered: Kratong thong-Typically love this, Mitr's version was a twist, serving them taco style. There were three which was a difficult number to share between two. Pork skewers-Very tasty, three skewers, which again made sharing awkward between two people. Crying tiger-Very delicious steak with sticky rice, easy to share Salmon with coconut and sticky rice-Fantastic, excellent in every way!!!!! Mango with warm sticky rice-Solid We loved the flavors! Our servers were kind and attentive. My only suggestion would be to serve the apps in even numbers so that two can share with more ease, otherwise, we loved Mitr and will return soon! read more

How this place does not have a line down the block at all times makes no sense to me... This is THE BEST Thai food in Maine. Here's how to order like a pro - you gotta get the fresh rolls, the moo ping, the grilled chicken combo, pad kra pow, and deffff get the coconut cake for dessert. Since I live so close by, watching the never-ending buildout of Mitr was starting to feel like Waiting for Godot. Yet it's finally opened, and it's a great addition to the neighborhood. Mitr likely snatches the barely-worn crown from Cabana as the smallest licensed restaurant in Portland. Seating capacity might be for 14. But it's classier than most non-Boda Thai in Portland, with attractive booths and a soothing green color scheme. I'd imagine that takeout and delivery (via DoorDash) will represent the majority of business. I tested the takeout on Mitr's second night open (too soon to fairly judge) and was a bit underwhelmed. The Pad Thai was less flavorful and stickier than nearby Vientiane. What a difference 10 days makes. We dined in on a Saturday at the counter seating, overlooking Congress Street. With the space being too small for a bartender, the only hard alcohol offered is in cans. We debated on a wine bottle (all $32-$34) but chose the classic silver 22 ounce Sapporo cans ($7) instead. The menu is split into appetizers, soups, "salads" (more like noodle dishes), specialities and entrees. The presentation of the dishes was excellent; we actually felt guilty eating them. -Moo Ping (pork skewers, 3 for $9): Standard tender pork, elevated by the incredible house-made Jaew sauce. -Thai wings ($9): A generous order of deep fried, piping hot, enormous wings. I'd return just for these. -Yum Mama ($14): Labeled a salad, but really a semi-spicy instant noodle dish with pork, sausage, tofu and imitation crab. It's different, but it really works. -Pad Prik Khing ($16): Stir fried red curry shrimp over green beans and jasmine rice, topped with a fried egg. While slightly smaller than the other dishes, it was a stunner, with the jasmine rice being my new favorite in Portland.. Service was impeccable and I appreciate the easy QR code payment system (with, refreshingly, no kitchen surcharges). There was a takeout line forming as we left, so I do wonder if they've perfected the balance of dine in versus takeout, with the small space. But our experience was excellent, and I'll return very soon. read more

What a great neighborhood restaurant! I got the fried eggs rolls and they were crispy, flavorful and came with a delicious sweet & sour sauce. For the main dish I got fried chicken pad thai, 1 star. YUM! I can't do really spice stuff and this was the perfect amount for me. The dish came with a lot of crispy, non-greasy chicken. I ended up boxing half it to take home! The place is small, so I wouldn't go with a group larger than 4. The only recommendation I would give is to add a small bar. All of the drinks with alcohol came from a can. The restaurant was so beautiful inside and had a cute little nook for two people to sit. The music matched the vibe of the paintings on the wall. I wasn't sure which sauce to try for my steak and the waitress gave me her recommendations and I got to try them for a small fee. The steak was SO good! The butterfly pea drink was a pretty purple color, but taste was unique, but glad I went outside of my comfort zone and tried it! I 100% recommend this place. Food tasted super fresh and most definitely authentic (much, much more authentic than the 'Thai flavored' cauliflower paninis from DuckFat which cast doubt on whether that chef had tasted Thai food. My new favorite Thai place! You can order online to pickup, which I love. They do rice noodles in their pad thai, which at first I wasn't so sure about the texture but I have grown to love them. Also, my 2nd favorite thing is their moo ping (marinated pork skewers) served with absolutely addictive tangy JAEW SAUCE. Skip the rubbery cuddlefish (aka calamari) skewer though. I've only ever had delivery from DoorDash from Mitr, but it's slowly becoming my go-to pad Thai spot for delivery. The dish hits all the notes I expect it to, sweet, sour, spicy (I order 3*), umami. Went on a stormy, April night and the atmosphere was so cozy and funky. Just what I was vibing for. On Wednesdays and Thursdays they run a happy hour menu all night, so we got a bunch of different skewers and a sauce flight, plus the two special entrees. Everything was divine. Since Mitr has opened it has quickly become our favorite Thai restaurant. The Pad Kra Pow, Red Curry, and Larb Moo are some of my favorites on the menu, but you really can't go wrong.
