My daughter and I went in for hair cut appointments since we're new to Philly and looking for a new hair salon. Both haircuts were done by older gentlemen, but they didn't introduce themselves so no idea their names or if they were the owners. Mine smelled of cigarettes and it was a bit much when he was really close cutting my hair. The haircut turned out fine. My daughter almost cried after leaving and told me that her hairstylist said "I'm going to cut a little more than you requested" before chopping off a few more inches than she wanted. Umm. No. Weirdly, upon checkout the lady at the front desk began discussing products and when I declined, she described HOW to properly shampoo hair, as if someone asked her. Strange. I love Oggi and the stylists that work there! My first cut was in 2008 and having long hair I was a little skeptical. Cynthia was my stylist and sensing my fear she gave me a stylish cut with lots of layers but not too crazy or high maintenance. I was happy with it because I gave her artistic license to do anything and she gave me a cut that looked good on me. Well, I didn't go back for awhile because I began to grow my hair back out and I went to my local cheap place for little trims here and there. So my second visit wasn't until September 2009 when I decided to chop it all off. And when I say chop, I mean chop. I had close to 11 inches taken off! I brought in some photos and Cynthia did an amazing job of giving me that cut while keeping in mind little details more suited for my face. I cannot give enough compliments to Cynthia! Once again I am super lazy with my hair and this is one of the areas where I know little to nothing. Cynthia was patient and discussed what I was looking for until we both agree on color and how much. Literally, I came in just going "I want purple hair!" and after establishing whether or not it was going to be all or highlights we chatted about color tones and then she worked her magic mixing an awesome color that made me grin from ear to ear! It is purple but not so cartoon-y that I would have issues at work. I have gotten nothing but compliments even from random strangers on the street! The owner returned my fee, but I am suffering and have to wait to see my podiatrist. Not all nails trimmed, polish on half a nail, but the pain, the pain is terrible. One became infected. Everyone I know will know about something that should have been wonderful, damaged me. read more

First time at oggi. This was for a body wave perm. (yes, a perm) The goal was beach waves not poodle perm. My hair is naturally semi wavy, this perm was to boost the natural wave and give my hair more oomph. Chris was spectacular, great to talk with and a perfectionist, which I appreciated as he was careful to get every hair and make sure the wave set. He cut my hair afterwards to help it fit the shape of the waves. I'm happy with the results, it looks natural and frizz free. You're just hoping to come out a little smoother, but the stress can be enough to drive one right back to tweezers. You can't help but wonder - will it hurt? Is the top layer of my epidermis about to be forcibly removed? Or, even worse - what if she takes off 50+% of my brows? Am I going to have to draw them on like some underaged Marilyn Manson devotee?? Joni Mitchell may have sang "You don't know what you got till its gone" but I didn't know how bad I had it until I went to Cynthia at Oggi, who showed me the light. I was feeling like my regular stylist in the burbs was not making the cut (oh I am so punny). I kept going back thinking that maybe it was my failing communication since I kept leaving with a color that wasn't quite right. Sure bright red hair is unnatural, but I want it. Despite my desire to be Mad Men Red, I kept leaving with a natural red. After 3 failed (and streaky) attempts, I decided to look elsewhere. I reached out to the Yelp Community for a good colorist for redheads, and Susan G quickly recommended Cynthia. I had the opportunity to meet Cynthia that night and knew she was the girl for me. Her bright red curls and red lips proved she wasn't afraid of color...just like me! I made the appointment the next day. My appointment with Cynthia was so much fun. She is such a cool girl and knew the red I wanted. Since I was feeling bold with the color, I opted to cut my hair short. Considering I hadn't had my hair above my shoulders since I was 15, it was definitely a daring move. I was surprised at first of the length (or lack thereof), but after a few days and a lot of compliments, I ended up being thrilled I made the decision. The red itself was perfect...beyond perfect. Sure my trip to Oggi was pricier than my normal salon, but the quality is so evident. Unfortunately, a few months later I was lured back to my old stylist partially out of guilt. After I decided to give her another try, I have been so disappointed with the experience. Essentially she admitted that she ignored my requests to be a brighter red and gave me what she thought I should have, which brings me back to my first statement, that I didn't know how bad I really had it. Whatevs, Cynthia totally proved I can rock red the way I want to and look great doing it. The cut is so much better and looked great 6 weeks later, which is hard to do when your hair is short. I am sad it took me so long to write this raving review, but happy to know I have a place to get my red locks the proper loving they need. read more

I've been going to Oggi since 2003 following a friend's recommendation and haven't looked back since. It's very convenient for Rittenhouse residents like myself, but I know several people who drive in from the suburbs (and parking is a major bitch around here), which to me says something about the quality of the place. I will admit I was slightly intimidated the first time I went - not by Charles, the stylist with whom I hit it off immediately, but the general atmosphere. "Is this place too snooty for me?" I silently wondered. Turns out I was wrong. After a few more visits I got to know the staff and they're friendly people. It's not cheap ($55 for a men's haircut) but I tend to wait too long in between cuts, so I consider it money well spent, especially since Charles is a stylist who actually listens to what you tell him you'd like done (just a trim, really short, etc. - unlike others I've had in the past who nod their head and wind up doing what THEY want) - and remembers my hair quirks. They also carry Kerastase products (and a whole lot of others as well), which are definitely not cheap, but the first time I used their shampoo I immediately noticed a significant improvement in my hair. So once in a while I'll splurge and buy a bottle and try to make it last as long as I can. Anyway, bottom line, I'm a loyal customer and a fan. (My female friends who go tell me how great the colorists/manicurists/et al are too, and they know more about hair and hair salons than I ever will.) read more

I'm sorry to disagree with everyone, but I was not impressed. I get better service in Iowa and my salon there is more industry forward. I found this surprising given that I was at highly rated salon in Center City. My stylist didn't seem to really know what I was talking about when I said that I had had a keratin treatment (really?) except to make several semi-snotty comments about the price. She acted bored while she was working on my hair (I'm sorry that I'm boring, but you should at least *pretend* to care given that your tip hinges on that) and didn't take much time to go over options with me (I was getting my hair done for a wedding) except to swiftly conclude that she could only blow it out. I was okay with that, but I really didn't appreciate how she washed my hair in cold water. It was like she wanted me to feel the resentment at having to do my hair. I honestly should have tipped less, but I'm used to getting good service, so I stupidly tipped my usual percentage. I wish I had gone somewhere else. Just because I live around corn doesn't mean that I'm ignorant about hair and industry standards. I resented being treated like a hick. I've spent most of my life in big cities, so thanks, A. at Oggi, for judging me based on where I live for my job. I wouldn't recommend this salon to any of my friends. Here's my story: I'm a natural redhead... but age has cooled the fire in my tresses a bit, so earlier this year I entrusted my locks to another stylist who proceeded to give me Hey Kool-Aid! hair. I was traumatized!!!! She sort of fixed it to a point where I was okay with it. Needless to say... I was not going to return there. So I turned to Yelp to guide me to someone who could restore my faith. Enter Cynthia.... she's one of those people who you can easily feel like you've known for years even though you just met her. She lacks the pretentiousness that many stylists seem to exude. She took the time to listen to my tale of woe and discuss with me the color I was looking for. Of course I was a bit nervous, given the last tragedy, but Cynthia put me at ease and I trusted her. Needless to say, I am beyond happy with my new color. it's perfect. It's exactly what I was looking for... a boost up from my natural color but nothing Ronald-McDonaldy or unnatural looking. And I didn't even mention my cute-n-sassy-kinda-rock-n-roll hair cut!! My sister recommended Charles from Oggi Salon many many years ago, and both my brothers won't let any other hair dressers touched their hair ever since especially the younger one. Philly is kind of far for a hair cut for me, but whenever I am in town to visit my sister and Charles happens to free up, I would stop by and let him trim my hair. I got to say he is really brilliant! Last time I was there, I told him I want to do side swipe band and showed him what i mean, and he said no problem and start doing his magic. To my surprise, my band never stay so nicely the way I wanted, EVER!!! I am super happy and really see the difference of a good hair dresser do make a big difference. Oggi gives off the vibe that it's trying too hard. The decor isn't anything I haven't seen before in my grandmother's apartment and the receptionists act like they're too good to help you. Upon entering the salon, I was not greeted by anyone and had no idea where to go. After walking up a flight of stairs and having a stylist tell me I was in the wrong place, I meandered back to what was apparently the reception area. One of the ladies behind the counter gave me a smock and said virtually nothing to me. The shampoo girl was amazing and after, I decided to be impulsive and fore go my trim and go for a short bob. My hair dresser was really nice and I thought he knew what I wanted when I said I wanted my bangs "just above my eyebrow, maybe a bit shorter." My bangs turned out A LOT shorter; however, my bob looks great, despite the fact that the short-short bangs make me look hippsterish. Bangs will grow, so although I'm not 100% happy now, in about 2 weeks I will be. With that being said, this place isn't worth the price or the hype. read more

If there is a place in Philly where I have consistently witnessed and seen great short hair cuts, Oggi might be it. My first time to Oggi was years ago when I decided to crop my hair short -- I literally took a photo from a magazine, booked an appointment (Cynthia) and came out with a cut that was exactly what I wanted (... and I do not have easy hair to cut/style). Kudos to Oggi for helping me maintain my short style, and now I have many friends and colleagues who love Oggi -- they all have short hair. I stopped going to Oggi, however, when I decided to grow out my cut. First time there, thought the reviews were good and I would have a good experience. I was very clear with the stylist that I only wanted a trim and even elaborated at how so many stylists cut an inch or more off when all I want is a trim, but as with most places and past experiences, stylists don't listen to what you want, they do what they want. The stylist added layers (which had taken me months to grow out) and cut it much shorter than I wanted or instructed, and I hate the cut. He asked if he could add a little layering in the back which I said, 'OK', but when I saw him cutting 2" off my hair I panicked and asked, "what are you doing? you are cutting a lot off!" His reply was he wasn't changing the length just adding the layering. This is not what I had in mind! My bad for agreeing to the "little" layering as it's all chopped up now. What I did get was a bunch of funky layering that now frizzes out in the rain. I had zero desire to have this style. I am very disappointed and now almost cry when I see my hair. Why can't stylists do what customers want??? All I wanted was a trim! Now it's going to take me 4 months get to where I was before this latest disappointment. Furthermore, before the cut I discussed with the stylist that I wanted to do a Keratin treatment, which he thought was a good idea (I have fine hair that gets wavy in humidity) so, again I ask, why did he give me layers? Having straightened hair with layers just doesn't seem right, does it?? I don't know why it's so hard to find a good stylist in the city who can cut fine hair and just give a trim when you ask for a trim. If anyone can recommend someone please let me know. I have been searching for the right salon in Philadelphia for three years now. Oggi is the last stop! Getting appointments is pretty painless and they have a good variety of days/hours that they are open for those of us who have crazy and ever-evolving work schedule. Ladies at front desk are very sweet. The inside of the salon is beautiful. Because it's in an old house, it can feel like a maze. So many different levels. I see Noreen here and she does a spectacular job and I highly recommend her. She gave me the best haircut I've had in three years and for a totally reasonable price. I've been coming to Oggi since I moved to Philadelphia on the advice of a friend whose hair always looked amazing. I heeded her advice and although I was not able to book her stylist (Noreen) I was able to grab an appointment the following week. I have been to three different Oggi stylists over the my years in Philadelphia and every experience has been awesome. The salon uses high quality color lines and great products which I've found is not always the case with other salons in the area. My current stylist, Cathy, is phenomenal - she takes her time and honestly cares about her clients, their wishes and making them happy. She takes pride in her work and let me tell you, it shows. My sister now goes to Cathy and she has become her biggest fan as well - I would give more stars if Yelp allowed it because of Cathy and her work ethic, energy and desire to make you look beautiful. She understands hair and what will/won't work on your hair/face type. I always listen to her and I've never regretted that decision either. I always get compliments on my hair cut and color, and though I change it up periodically (recently went brunette) the results remain the same. Sad to recommend Cathy because I enjoy making same week appointments, but honestly if you need a great stylist and awesome salon, pick Cathy at Oggi - she'll make your hair look amazing! read more

I found Edith! I have been to her a few times when she was at Jason Matthew and she is by far the BEST in Philadelphia. I have been to a several places for a brazilian wax in Philly, and they all paled in comparison to Edith. She is fast, friendly, and painless. We always have wonderful conversations during my wax which make it less painful and the time go by faster. It is about $55 for a brazilian wax which I find to be on the pricier side in Philadelphia, but Edith is worth every penny. I am always so weary of Groupons and Living Social deals that offer cheaper brazilian waxes mainly because Edith is so amazing. read more

OGGI is one of the best places to have you hair done in Philadelphia. Everything, from the second you walk in till the end of your appointment, was a very special experience. I loved the ambience of this gorgeous salon, the products, the equipment and, the most importantly, the people. I felt so welcomed immediately. I had my haircut and color done by Fiorella. After the consultation, I knew immediately that I was in the hands of the first class Stylist. She explained her haircut plan and offered to change the color and the stile of my haircut. Having not had a hair stylist that I felt comfortable and connected enough to be very loyal, I had taken to salon jumping and basically neglect of my hair for the past two years. Finally, as my locks hung limp and frayed, I looked in the mirror one morning and decided I had had enough. I wanted to be committed and loyal to healthy hair, but I needed to find my hair guru first. I set out on the scooter, determined to find the right match. When I arrived at Oggi I was warmly welcomed at the reception and was told that Toby could see me for a consultation. Let's pause here. Most places I visited told me that I would have to schedule and pay ($15 seemed to be the norm) for a consultation. The fact that they took me on the spot, gratis, already had Oggi in a favorable position. I immediately love Toby's professionalism and sincerity. What won me over was his confidence and concise answers to my questions. He knew exactly what he wanted to do with my hair, taking into consideration my lifestyle and face shape and my ultimate vision for my dream hair (Victoria's Secret model hair...why not dream big, right?). When I went back downstairs to schedule my appointment, I was sure I'd have to wait another 3 weeks or so to get in. Again, I was pleasantly surprised when they were able to fit me in for that Saturday. Sure enough, Toby did not disappoint when it came to the actual day of cutting and coloring. I made an appointment with Cynthia at Oggi after reading all of her reviews on Yelp! I've been going to the same sylist and colorist for the past 10 years, so I was VERY nervous about trying something new (I'm psycho when it comes to my hair), but Cynthia lived up to all of the hype! She was extremely friendly and professional. I had very long hair and had been thinking about chopping it off for a while. Cynthia discussed with me what she thought would look good with my face shape and gave me some suggestions. She also brought out color samples for me to view before deciding on a color. I actually brought in a picutre of what wanted, and never showed it to her because she seemed so confident in her approach to cutting my hair. When she was finished and I looked in the mirror, it looked EXACTLY like the picture that I had brought in! She was able to recrate what I wanted based solely on our converastion. Overall, I am so happy with the outcome! My hair looks great and I've been getting so many compliments! The entire staff at Oggi was so nice, from the front desk staff to all of the assistants. I was unable to get an appointment before an important event with my regular colorist at another Salon. Oggi Salon had an opening. That is where I met Cindy. It was my lucky day. My color turned out better than ever. The key was that Cindy listened to what I wanted and then explained what result I would get if I did it exactly as I had requested. She then explained how I could get a better result. She is the expert and I listened to her. She knows that hair color can make you look younger or older if not executed well. Who wants to look older? Over a year later, I would not trust my color to anyone else! The pricing at the salon is also well in line with the quality of the service. Sometimes when I'm feeling antsy, and need to take a break from my normal salon (Salon Royal Court), I head on over to Victor at Oggi. My mom has been a devoted client of his for years, and her hair always looks gorgeous. I have very pin-straight, unfussy hair, and I've become quite spoiled in that I don't like to really spend tons of time messing with it and styling it. One would think it's pretty hard to mess up straight hair, but oh has it been done! But at Oggi, I've always left with a wonderful cut. I love that Victor listens to exactly what I want and uses his expertise to give me a gorgeous, flowing, shapely cut that I can even let air dry without compromising its style. It falls beautifully in all the right ways and gives my Peppermint Patty-esque hair life! I usually grow my hair out very long to donate it to Locks of Love, and everytime I have them cut off a ponytail to donate, it is done meticulously and the actual haircut after never suffers! He creates wonderful bangs as well, which is definitely an art form in itself. Getting bangs can be a terrifying experience, and only the slightest snip can ruin the entire look for months. Not here! The staff is also pretty friendly which is nice. Last visit I had a severely broken foot and was on crutches, and they made arrangements for me to have my hair washed downstairs rather than climbing to the third floor, even though I insisted I could've made it! Wonderful customer service, and all without making a big deal or having me feel silly or embarrassed about my injury (and the toddle that accompanied it!). I came up from Washington, DC for a wedding this past Saturday. It was a black-tie event at the Radisson- Warwick Hotel in Rittenhouse Square and I didn't have the time, patience or skill to do my hair appropriately. Earlier in the week, I had found another salon nearby (Salon A, we'll call it) on Yelp that I was going to try, but when I called they were all booked (and a good thing, because one of the other attendees went there and HATED it). I skipped down to what would have been my third or fourth choice before I could get an appointment for that afternoon but still wasn't 100% confident in my decision in what we'll call Salon B. The receptionist seemed pretty incompetent and prices were hiiiigh. But I really had no other options at that point, so I kept it for then. So fast forward to Saturday afternoon. After a cold, snowy drive to Philly, I was navigating the tangle of one-way streets to the hotel and drove past a Bubbles Salon. Eureka! It's my inexpensive, go-to salon in DC. Bad news, no appointments for that afternoon. But! The very helpful receptionist there recommended calling Oggi. They were able to get me in a half an hour later! Fan-tastic. I immediately cancelled my appointment with Salon B and and walked LITERALLY across the street from the hotel to Oggi. My appointment there was with Noreen, an adorable redhead for the moment. She apparently changes her hair color as often as I do. I sat down and just said, I need it to look pretty, I need it to be out of my face, and I need it to be black-tie appropriate. Ready? GO! Forty five minutes, 60 hair pins and a half a bottle of hairspray later I walked out with a GORGEOUS grecian-esque up do. It was lots of loose curls pinned into a beautiful pile on the back of my head. It looked like I had a ton of hair and I was quite impressed seeing as how I have barely shoulder-length, baby-fine hair. Noreen was fantastic and if I lived anywhere near Philly I might consider going to Oggi to see her on a semi-regular basis. The only reason I say semi-regularly and the only reason I gave Oggi 4 stars is that that beautiful hairdo didn't come cheap. It ended up running me $85 plus tip, but that was still less than I would have paid at both Salons A and B, so I can't complain too much. I'm sure if it was anywhere but right smack downtown the prices wouldn't be that high. Also, I will have to agree with a previous poster when they said the front desk staff was slightly snooty. If I'm ever up in Philly again I would definitely go back. I'd also be interested to know how their spa treatments are. Prices on the website actually sounded fairly reasonable, but that all depends on the level of service they provide. Oh! I've waxed poetic (get it?! HA) about the waxing services at Oggi. Last Thursday found me in the midst of a very stressful week at work, which was taking its toll on my body. Picture shoulders touching ears, sore muscles, hunched over, dazed/confused, and lashing out at people I love (or at least, people I work with.) I needed a massage, STAT. After calling a few places, Oggi was the one who could fit me in for a 90 minute muscle pounding. The receptionist on the phone told me she could fit me in at the time I needed. A little while later, I got a call that the masseuse was actually not available for 90 minutes but could take me for 60. Figuring that would have to suffice, I was fine with it and called back to confirm, at which point they said they could actually take me for the 90 minutes. Very confusing, so I wasn't sure what I'd get when I actually got in there. I went in and up to the 3rd floor where the massages take place, where I met Jenna, this petite little lady who I immediately judged as probably not going to be much help (but I was there, so whatever.) I was wrong. SO WRONG. This lady has strength, and she worked my muscles deeper than any massage has EVER. It went the entire 90 minutes, but I wanted more when she was done. It was sublime. The actual massage was 5 stars. I have to take off the last star for a couple reasons, though, some which don't bother me so much but might bother others. First, there was no intake form (that I remember, unless I'd filled one out for waxing before) asking about what I expected, medications/conditions, etc. Not a problem for me because none of those things apply, but I'd just be sure to talk that stuff over with her first if you have any issues. She's really nice and listens to what you need, so that shouldn't be a problem. A slightly bigger issue is that the room is not very soundproof, and there are other procedures going on at the same time. Basically, there were some clients chatting pretty loudly outside the room. That could probably be solved with a "Massage in session--quiet, please." type of sign. Finally, there was the confusion with the front desk, but honestly, that's the first time I've experienced that at Oggi, so it's not a deal-breaker for me, and it worked out, anyway. So basically, Oggi is still my favorite place to get anything done in the city, and the prices are extremely competitive for the quality of service. read more
