What's all the fuss about? This weekend I had my first and last trip to ohana cafe. I came because there was a BOGO breakfast coupon on Facebook , so I thought I'd give it a chance When we got there and sat down, the problems started. Very slow service. Someone must have walked by us at least 5 times before we got a menu. Another 10 minutes to order a drink and 5 more after that to order food. I got the da kine bowl. My mom got the omelette and the kids pancakes for my daughter. Food took forever to come out. We asked 2 times for honey and never got it. Asked for salsa for the eggs and we were charged $2 for a tablespoon size portion. At the end, I reminded the server about my coupon before paying the bill. She still didn't apply it. Had to ask again, this time she took the coupon off, but it was only $8 value, not really BOGO. Bathrooms were dirty. Nobody ever checked on us to see how our meal was. Looking for a healthy option, veggie or even vegan, instead of just another burger place, we found this awesome place online. We had great food, loved the veggie burger patty, the home made healthy slaw and the lemonade. You can see and taste that the chef has thought about his/her menu, as there is a great variety and what we had tasted delicious! The desert muffin was a blast as well and even gluten free! BBQ short ribs were very good Cons: thick chunky ketchup, dry oatmeal pancakes, gravy on loco moco not very flavorful (potion was extremely small, compared to portioning of the authentic loco moco in Hawaii). So, we had heard pretty good things but honestly they didn't do justice. I am amazed this place isn't packed! Mike and I got there in the afternoon. Quickly and pleasantly seated. This was our first time and the server was patient as we reviewed the menu and let us know she could answer any questions we had. We got a Maui pineapple wheat beer which was good, a hibiscus tea that tasted delightful and my husband particularly liked, and a pomegranate soda that they make which was my fave. We ultimately chose two sandwiches. Sadly at home now I can't remember the names but one was the ham and pineapple which was the perfect blend of flavors! The other had teriyaki beef and was my fave of the two with the very delicious bits of slaw in it and fresh jalapeño. They were out of the beet slaw so we were given two other sides of a different slaw and their potato salad. The owner was sitting in a booth behind us and helped us learn more on the delicious sides. The one slaws unique flavor came from the addition of rice wine making it quite delicious. Meanwhile, I have never like veganase but the soy-free version used on their potato salad was delicious. The owner, Theresa, was a delight to speak with. Most everything is homemade in the restaurant with even the kimchi being done in-house staring in the next few weeks! This little spot was recommended by my sister in law who is vegan. We had vegan, pescatarian and omnivores in our group which is tricky. Everyone was able to order something they were happy with. This healthy fare Hawaiian cuisine was fresh, flavorful and interesting. One of our orders was a variation of the loco moco and it looked extremely tasty. The manager came out and personally complimented our family and thanked us for dining with them. I ordered the black bean and quinoa burrito which was humongous and tasty. It was a tad spicy yet sweet due to the pineapple. I could only finish one half. My bf ordered the bulgogi which was one of the most expensive items on the menu but was a pretty small portion size. He was a bit disappointed since everyone else food was really delicious and huge portion sizes. They serve breakfast all day which two members of our party took advantage of- huge, thick pancakes. The Hawaii 5-0 burger was a huge hit as was the vegan tacos. Really you can't go wrong here aside from the bulgogi. We were a group of 13. Overall highly recommend. I recently had brunch at Ohana and wasn't sure what to expect. I went in the beautiful restaurant with a very open mind, and boy was I so very pleased with my experience. First, it's a family that owns and runs the place. Their attention to their customers is equally matched by their unique and delicious menu. The selections are plentiful with a dish for every taste. We were blessed to meet the whole family and I know that you will be fortunate to meet and chat with them. Now the food....i had the absolutely best oatmeal pancakes. They were plentiful and absolutely delicious. The nice crispy bacon was the icing on the cake. Yum...there was not a crumb left on my plate. My constant companion opted for the perfectly crafted breakfast sandwich, which has all the yumminess all in a handheld masterpiece. We had home brewed ice tea and sat and enjoyed the fellowship, the pretty and quaint dining room. The ambiance is welcoming, parking plentiful, both indoor and outside seating available. Why 5 stars? Because the pancakes with macadamia sauce is one of the best tasting things in the Bay Area. --- --- --- Seriously, the macadamia sauce is utterly ridiculous. It's the perfect tasting substance. When my fiance and I decided to plan our wedding in Hawaii, I quickly discovered that an unknown benefit of this destination: the food. I'll had virtually no knowledge about Hawaiian cuisine, but after perusing Yelp listings in Hawaii during wedding planning, I've quickly discovered the realization that I might not ever come back after the nuptials. Quickly we began hunting for the closest thing we could find to authentic Hawaiian food, here in Tampa Bay. Sadly, it's almost non-existent. By the time I remembered Ohana Cafe from our 2015 Yelper Party, they closed up shop and were in the process of moving to Dunedin. So we sat by for weeks, waiting for this paradise to open. And after checking Facebook about 65 times for a status update, finally, it did. As you can imagine, there was a lot of hype built up in our minds. And guess what? Those freaking pancakes with macadamia sauce exceeded it. And it's not just because the sauce is great. The quality of pancake is just as high. And the popover is excellent as well. Teresa's mom makes these herself every day, and they are served until they sell out. How do I know this? Teresa told me herself! Oh, and who is Teresa you ask? Probably the sweetest business owner I've met in my 4 years with Yelp. During our time at Ohana, she spent the morning just walking around table to table and making sure everyone's experience was as wonderful as it could be. She gave out at least 50 hugs in the hour. Ohana definitely has the feel of a place where everybody knows your name, and if they don't, she'll soon learn it. And hug you. After one visit, I think Ohana is my favorite breakfast spot in Tampa Bay, the best Hawaiian restaurant in Tampa Bay, and the best restaurant in Dunedin. At last, I was waiting for Ohana Cafe to open, following their FB, messaging them, rooting them on, and yay, they are open as of Feb. 2, and just yesterday I was there. If I can have anything over and over again, it is their pop over with macadamia syrup. There are no words to describe it. I suggest requesting they give that to you at the end of your entee, so it is nice and warm. You can order that as a breakfast, or a la carte, which I did. It's nice and light with the sweet macadamia syrup. I ordered their Loco Moco Teri which is a teriyaki flavored buffalo burger patty, brown rice, spinach, sweet Carmelized onion, fried egg, added pineapple. It was so so good. My hubby had the Hawaii 5-0 buffalo burger with pineapple and added fried egg. He liked it a lot but the ciabatta bread fell apart. I'm thinking because of the added fried egg, so maybe don't try that. Or choose the sprouted wheat bun. The service was A+++++ from the hostess to our server. Teresa, where were you? I missed you. The decor is nice with a beautiful mural with the true meaning of their restaurant, Hawaiian signs, bamboo accents, and a surf board. There's no outside seating area yet. I hear they may work on that in the future, but not sure where it would be located. First thing is first; this is not your typical nickel-and- dime breakfast diner, so don't bust up in here with a ten dollar bill thinking you and your girl are about to grub. Y'all might be able to get two raspberry iced teas. Maybe. Everything here is free of GMOs, antibiotics, nitrates, hormones and in many cases, gluten. Consider this breakfast and lunch fine dining. Like a lone fire ant, I wandered in on Tuesday to scout the gluten-free friendliness of this place before bringing my ladyfriend, who can no longer eat the stuff. What I found is that this place is perfect for her. I foresee many outings here in the future. I got the Paniolo breakfast and substituted the turkey bacon for Portuguese sausage, which ended up being a winner move. That is some seriously good stuff. Very powerful in the flavor department. So much so that I had to take extremely small bites. The eggs were scrambled to perfection. Light, fluffy and expertly cooked, almost like a soft boiled egg. Sad to leave a less than great review, but we had a disappointing experience on Sunday. I had a reservation for 12 people at 10:30am that I confirmed the day before in person (while I was picking up a dozen cupcakes). The noise level/music was very loud, the service was painfully slow (the wait just for coffee was long, then the wait for cream and sugar was even longer.) After being seated for awhile we had to ask to order coffee and then ask again to order our food. I was surprised to see that they had been in business for 10 years as they seemed ill prepared over all. I know it's hard to staff these days, and I have compassion for that, maybe they were just having an off day? We wanted to love this place, and picked it because of the great reviews and because my daughter is Gluten Free and we were celebrating her birthday. The prices were high and food was just okay. The food was hot when it came out, so that was a plus. Have to give some stars for the GF vegan cupcakes, those were good! (Although I had an order placed in advance to be ready at 9:30am and I literally waited over 30 minutes for them and no one acknowledged the long wait. Unfortunately, I am comparing this Hawaiian restaurant to an outstanding Hawaiian restaurant in Las Vegas, NV: Island Flavor on Durango Drive. I ordered Poke for the entree. I use Poke as a benchmark to see how good any Hawaiian restaurant is. Here goes: Service: Friendly & cheerful Tutu's Berry Banana smoothie: Tasted like a watered-down shake. There were strawberry & banana flavors. Coconut-Lime Soup: Delicious. Savory. Lomi Lomi Tomato: Refreshing. Nice. Poke in Paradise: This Poke was sadly abysmal. This was sashimi, not Poke. The tuna in Poke is traditionally cut into bite-sized pieces. The tuna slices in Ohana's Poke were actually sliced like thick sashimi...about 2" long and 1/4-1/2" thick...bite-sized for an alligator.There was a tiny hint of the Poke sauce. The Poke was basically dry...not typical of Poke. When more poke sauce was requested, I was given soy sauce with a few grains of garlic(?)...definitely not Poke sauce. Simply horrible. The macadamia nut pancakes were underwhelming. While the macadamia nut flavor was there, the sauce had a frosting consistency. The pancakes were a little dry. My friend ordered the loco moco Ohana style. It looked pretty, but it was a complete miss. The gravy was all salt and onions. It was hard to enjoy the egg and beef patty. I used to love this place. UNTIL I ordered the Sunshine Burger. At a time where inflation is at a 30-year high, I find it insulting that some establishments would charge you for something that is more of a condiment than the actual main dish and use the garnishing as the main course. When I received my burger, it looked like a lot of food. When I bit into my burger, I could barely get my mouth around it. But, not because the burger was so big....90% of the actual "burger" consisted of a huge stack of spinach. The burger was literally about a centimeter thick and was so fragile that it disintegrated into the bun! I will post a picture to verify. There isn't much more I can say than that. It was all bun and spinach, which is not what I ordered. I shared my thoughts with the waitress but she didn't seem to care or respond. I paid my bill and left but I'm not sure I will be back. Kind of a disappointing experience. We waited ten minutes or so before asking a server passing by to take our order. Even had to ask for water. Then the food took about 30 minutes to come out. I will admit the loco moco was really good but for two meals the Bill came to $40. I made the mistake of asking for Mac salad which traditionally comes with the loco moco and it costed $4-$5 (I can't remember) for the tiniest portion maybe 1/2 a cup. I don't mind paying for good food but for a small lunch portion it just seemed pricey considering we didn't even order drinks.
