This was the best time we had our entire trip (and my previous trips to oahu). Chris, our surf instructor, was super cool, gave easy instructions and made sure we rode as many waves we could. The entire team was awesome and even though we had a private lesson, all the instructors in the water helped us. Danny was also an instructor, who did the safety and led a group lesson. THIS EXPERIENCE WAS AMAZING AND DOES NOT DISAPPOINT!! Reed took my husband and I out to SUP and he was awesome. We had a quick little stretch and then learned the basic ways to turn and how to stand up. We got in the water and he checked we could turn in the actual water and off we went. He continued to give us little tie bits as we went along to help us. Both of us were successful and able to stand up and paddle. Highly recommend. Everyone was extremely nice and friendly. I just want to provide a little breakdown of what to expect if you're like me and have never surfed before. I was pretty nervous prior to the class, so hopefully someone else in the same position finds this helpful! I signed up for a private class and walked down to the location they specify. They have their OSP bus parked and a tent/canopy set up at the park very closeby. You walk up to the tent and get checked in, receive a loaner red surf shirt and water shoes (I believe you can bring your own if you have them), plus a wristband. Then you take a short video presentation on surf safety in the bus before grabbing some boards and heading down to the beach. Your instructor will go through the standing up technique with you and then it's time to hit the waves! Keep in mind that if you're not used to it, you may run out of steam very quickly! It's a LOT of cardio and arm/back strength, so I recommend you work out and build those muscles in order to get the most out of the class. Otherwise, you can totally take breaks when you need them, and "talk story " with the friendly instructor. Side note - If you get a private lesson, you will be around the larger group, but will receive 1-on-1 instructor attention the entire time. After catching a few waves and getting some awesome videos and pictures taken, it's time to head back to shore, review the pictures and purchase them if you choose. I would highly recommend Ohana Surf Project, they are friendly, professional and extremely accommodating. I can't wait for another chance to try some surfing! read more

I wanted to take my 12 year old daughter surfing for her first time, and I'm really glad we found Ohana Surf. The spot at Queen's Surf Beach is conveniently near Waikiki, and the conditions are great for beginners. We took a semi-private lesson, and our instructor (Danny) could not have been more fun, positive, and encouraging for my daughter. He was good at explaining what to do and where to be, without making things too technical. Also, when my wedding ring fell off in the ocean mid-session, Danny had another crew member bring goggles out to the break and he helped me look (unfortunately, to no avail). We had a great time and I'm looking forward to more surfing with my daughter in Hawaii. Despite what I lost on the reef, we gained an experience that we'll keep forever! read more

My teenage kids and I rented surfboards from Ohana for several days last week and it was such a great experience. Their prices are the best we found in Waikiki. Sean and Chelsea are wonderful, helpful, warm people and they were really generous. Even though we weren't taking lessons from them, they managed to snap a few photos of us and even gave surfing advice along the way. I would totally recommend this surf company! Waikiki has so many but I am so glad we went with this one! My best friend and I wanted to learn to surf and decided on this one because they where situated a little bit away from the tourist area, which allowed us to feel more comfortable and less worried about running into local surfers! Our instructor was Troy and he did an amazing job! After each wave he had nothing but encouraging words and feedback for us, so much so that we extended our lesson to two hours (which I would totally recommend)! Chelsea was around the whole time taking amazing pictures of us. The whole staff was so friendly and encouraging! We were all joking with each other! Eventually Troy took us out to the back line with the bigger waves and that honestly made our experience even more enjoyable! We were a rather large group... seven people. 4 children and 3 adults. The team was excellent. They handled our group so well. They were very patient with the kids. We all got up a few times and surfed! Scratch that off my bucket list. My only recommendation is to pay the extra to hire their recommended photographer. They have a go pro but of course since they are busy giving you lessons, you are not being filmed by an individual. Since we were a big group we opted to hire one. I love the shots we got! Awesome experience with the Ohana Surf Project! We did a group lesson for 2 hours and it couldn't have gone better- it was very organized with multiple instructors out on the water, and the group format helps you go at a comfortable pace. I also feel that the prices were fair and more affordable compared to others in the area. Being brand new to surfing, they helped us get the hang of it quickly. We contacted the Ohana Surf Project team, via a recommendation from a friend, to give our 13 year old grandson a surf lesson in Oahu. A representative picked us up from our hotel at no charge and took us to an excellent beach where several surfing professionals gave our grandson a wonderful two hour lesson. All members of the Ohana Surf Project team were very friendly and highly skilled. We liked the surf lesson so much, we got two more lessons. Each lesson was preceded by emails telling us useful information about the lesson. We also received free photos of our grandson surfing during each lesson. I am 56 yrs old, I did not want to go, and don't like stand up paddle-boarding. I was overruled and reluctantly went. They made me a believer. They take many pics and videos!! Worth the money!!! I have taken a few lessons before, but this has been the absolute best. The instructors are very knowledge and teach about the ocean, surfing fundamentals and explain more details than just pushing you into a wave and getting you to stand up. They got loads of great photos and videos and didnt rush us at the end and let us catch a few more waves to make sure we ended with a great run! For my second ever surf lesson (if you can even count the first one, which was me being forced to put on a wet slimy wetsuit in the freezing cold in Ireland at age 15 as part of highschool gym class! miserable experience!) i was very pleasantly impressed, with myself and with them. Ohana Surf is seriously the best!! I was visiting Oahu for a few days and decided to try surfing for the very first time. Just for some background - I'm not remotely athletic, nor am I a strong swimmer. I'm the type of person who only goes waist-deep in the ocean since I'm never comfortable in the water. BUT as soon as we started paddling in the water, I felt safe. My instructor Chelsea was paddling next to me the whole time. In fact, she somehow managed to steer my surfboard with her feet so I was always close by and always pointing in the right direction. Each time a wave came by, she gave my board a good push. She helped me catch my very first wave! I managed to catch a ton more waves after that (all caught on camera with a GoPro) and now I'm hooked. Can't wait to go back! These guys have a great team. This was my first surfing experience ever and I'm hooked. Saturday I had a lesson with Troy - he taught me all the basics and helped me get up on several waves my first time out. I have been wanting to try this for a while and it was pretty awesome to jump out there and do it. Troy was super relaxed and really took any stress I had about the lesson away. It was enough to make me come back the very next morning for a lesson with Kainoa. Knowing that a couple of us already had a previous lesson, he cut to the chase- pushing us to get our own waves and trying to get back out and do as many as possible. It was exhausting but incredible. I came back later that day, rented a board from the guys and went out on my own for a bit in the afternoon. It was an enormous learning experience. I managed to catch about 6 waves on my own in that time, which I guess is okay for day 2. I'll be going back for additional lessons to hopefully get sharper about picking waves and getting better with timing. These guys genuinely want you to enjoy yourself and get better. Ok.....if you are new to surfing like we were 2 summers ago (or you are retired from the surf circuit and want to hang w other hot and knowledgeable people!), and you want to learn from the best there is ONE game in Waikiki!! OSP is where it's at!! We surfed for the entire week we were in Waikiki..we thought we'd surf once or twice but after getting the rush from surfing we were hooked and couldn't get enough!! Sean (the "GrandMaster Flash" OF SURF), Chelsea and Nick made surfing obtainable and enjoyable for all of us!! Couldn't recommend a nicer or more entertaining group of people. They were so professional that we felt safe entrusting our children with them, and enjoyed all of our time on the water with them!! Most people only dream about surfing.....but through OSP you can easily change that dream into a reality!! We were also lucky enough to catch them in Costa Rica and we spent 4 days surfing the waves there!! You could call us spoiled, but we prefer to think we are just extremely lucky!!! long over due review. was in honolulu awhile back. unfortunelty my wife fractured her leg sking so she could not surf but i willl get back to that. i signed up and not having surfed in 20 years ( you get the age now) i was hesitant.chelsea gave me an orientation and lessons on land. then we hit the surf. she was patient and cheerful yet always guiding me with instructions. after a few atempts i made it up . very exciting part of my day. lesson ended and back on land. my wife is athletic and i felt bad she was unable to surf due to her leg. chelsea and crew seeing how i felt went into action. they had susan get in the water ( she did not have a cast modern medicine). she floated to a board . the ohana surf crew got her up chelsea paddled out and they were able to ride a few waves in while susan sat holding on. cannot express how ohana project made this the highlight of our trip. next time, we vacation we go surfing to honolulu not sking in colorado . and yes ohana surf project will be there to guide us. read more
