My hubby had a very strong bourbon and water and I had a cream, liquor, vodka drink that was very tasty, similar to a White Russian. At around 6 pm chef Todd began by telling us his history and passion for cooking inspired by his grandmothers as he prepared our appetizers. I am a bit fuzzy on the details of the ingredients of all the dishes since I fell later that evening, broke my hip and shoulder and spent the next 6 days in the hospital but I'll do my best, keeping in mind all 4 courses were expectional. Appetizer was a baked pear with goat cheese and a crostini with cranberry goat cheese, walnuts and honey drizzle. Second course was a bean soup and corn bread. Main course was pot roast, carrots, potatoes and mushrooms. Mine was super tender and very flavorful. Mu husbands portion had a lot of fat but what he could eat was tasty. And for dessert he served bananas foster bread pudding. We were given a sample of the bread pudding upon arrival to whet our appetites and it sure did. The whole experience was first class; food, service, cocktails, interaction with the chef, owner and wait staff, atmosphere was just plain fun, entertaining and satisfying. We were there about 2 hours. Street parking, comfortable setting and a unique dinning experience. I highly recommend for a special occasion. It was a pleasure meeting Dallas McGarity, the executive chef and owner. He shared that the restaurant has been open for about ten years and that he's preparing to open a new Italian concept. When the topic of his James Beard nomination came up, he mentioned it was a complete surprise--the restaurant didn't self-nominate--which made the recognition feel even more meaningful. One thing I neglected to ask him directly was why lamb plays such a central role on the menu. Our server wasn't entirely sure either, but she did explain how the restaurant got its name. Apparently, Dallas was traveling through the countryside, spotted a particularly memorable "fat lamb" on a farm, and the name stuck. Sometimes it really is that simple. With four of us dining, we may have gone a bit overboard on starters--but no regrets. We shared the roasted Brussels sprouts, lamb kofta meatballs, fontina and truffle arancini, and the whipped feta and pita. Every dish was well-executed and easy to share, which made them ideal for a business dinner. For entrées, my wife and I split the signature tandoori and ancho spice-roasted lamb chops. They were flavorful without being heavy, and the black barbecue sauce added a nice depth. Our server highly recommended the Moroccan-spiced halibut, which our other guests shared and thoroughly enjoyed--especially the mushroom demi-glace. Dessert was the Nutella mousse, another house signature. The Italian cherries and chocolate shavings were a great finishing touch without pushing things into overly sweet territory. Beyond the food, what really stood out was the service and pacing. The evening flowed naturally--never rushed, never dragging--which is exactly what you want when entertaining clients or colleagues. The Memorial Hall is a good place to start with a short educational video, some small exhibits, and the gift shop. The Memorial Visitor Center closes from 12-1 pm for lunch, so plan accordingly if you need to use the nice clean bathrooms or fill your water bottle. The park includes a pioneer cemetery, a living history farm, a memorial to the Lincoln family cabin, and some short trails. When we visited (late May) on a weekday morning, there were no historical interpreters at the living history farm, and the buildings were all locked. I'm not sure when the living history farm is functional, but it looks like it would be fun. I highly recommend the Trail of Twelve Stones, which leads you through the peaceful woods along a path which houses 12 stones from significant locations in Lincoln's life.

Abraham Lincoln is great and almost universally identified as the greatest president ever. This was basically my last spot in my pilgrimage to all things Lincoln. This was probably the least interesting of all the sites that I listed above, The visitor's center has a small gift shop, the usual National Park rangers to give you maps and knowledge and a theatre to watch a little film about the Honest One himself. From there you walk up to the Pioneer Cemetery where there is a memorial for Abe's mother Nancy who is buried somewhere near that spot. She died of milk sickness all because a cow ate a snakeroot plant! Thank God for modern medicine! Anyway from there you walk up to replica of the cabin they would have lived in and an active farm that looks as it would have when Lincoln was there. The last spot is a spring that the Lincoln's would have carried water from. All in all it was a mile walk each way. You can drive closer to some of these spots as well if you lack feet. All in all I'm glad the place exists but it's not a must do spot for the casual history buff.

It's crazy that the place was a tourist attraction way back in the day. You'd have to plan for being on the roads for probably days to get here. Tour was cool. Very pretty. Out ranger was super personable and seemed to love his job so that's nice. Glad we decided to drop by and check it out on our way back from Chattanooga.
