We were asked to fill out a form and provide an excessive amount of personal information, only for them to reach out 2 days later to schedule a meeting... which they canceled. Not once. Not twice. Three times. By the fourth attempt, we honestly should've taken that as a sign. When we finally made it to the Zoom call, we mentioned that we already have a cat, which we thought would help speed things up. Somehow, it did the opposite. We were told we had to submit our cat's vaccination records, and IF AND ONLY IF those were approved, we might be allowed to meet the kitten two weeks later, since she was in a foster home. At that point, we were done. We didn't send anything. Instead, we drove straight to the Humane Society. And what a difference. We walked in, met the most adorable kitten on the planet, petted her, filled out some basic paperwork, and were treated like normal, trustworthy people, not suspects under investigation. We walked out with our kitten in under two hours. This place was completely unserious, wildly inefficient, and a total waste of time.

The puppy I bought was sick and had been on antibiotics for a month - but he was not separated from other animals when he was sold to me. The Petland Kingsdale veterinarian and employees KNEW the dog had kennel cough and did not isolate him. Petland Kingsdale willingly placed this puppy in an area where he would infect other animals (and vice versa). I can only assume this is a standard practice, as the woman who sold me my dog called it a "cold" and likened it to "doggie daycare," as diseases were passed from puppy to puppy all the time. Except for the list of vaccinations, the actual medical treatment records were withheld from me until I signed the paperwork and made the purchase. The "warranty" (as if you are purchasing a washing machine) is valid only if you take your dog to their preferred vet. I view this as a flagrant conflict of interest. Also, you must purchase food items every 90 days to fulfill your end of the warranty agreement. Important to note: In the purchase agreement, Petland Kingsdale makes no guarantee that the dog is a purebred, and it does not guarantee the of the accuracy of the pedigree/lineage. They sell puppies "as-is." They require purchasers to sign a class action waiver and an arbitration agreement. Even if their puppies were NOT from puppy mills, and they gush over how wonderful their veterinarian is, I do not have faith that Petland Kingsdale and their staff are going above and beyond to exceed the paltry USDA and Ohio standards of care. I justified the purchase thinking - this is a clean store in an upper middle class suburb - the people working here are so nice - how could THIS place support such a cruel industry!?! Sadly, they do. It is heartbreaking for owners like me who feel emotionally manipulated - we only get slivers of information from sales staff and vague, nonchalant dismissals of concerns. I'm talking about a favorite pet speciality shop, Captivating Canines. (See pictures) For about a year we'd noticed that the store was no longer at the corner of Main St. and Westerville in downtown Westerville. We were saddened to see it go because it had been a favorite shop to pick up unique Christmas and birthday gifts for pet owner friends and family. So, when we walked out the back door of Old Bag of Bones, we could see this new shop and decided to check it out. Ron, the new owner had bought the store but relocated just a short distance down Main St. Although he told me he wasn't a huge "BUCKEYE" fan, I was willing to forgive him of that small indiscretion as we continued to talk about the store and new inventory he had on display. He was very gracious and allowed us to walk around and take pictures of him and specialized, fun merchandise he had in the store to share with you. It is a very relaxed environment so you can casually take your time to look around. Many items are marked down 50%. I was equally impressed and appreciative that the shop was designed to be handicap friendly with ample aisle space that allowed me to take my walker to any place I wanted to go.

Today we had to get his second collar and a new harness. They have a great selection of bright and colorful and fun designed collars and harnesses. We always come away from there happy and in a good mood. Such a sweet little place. It's fun to shop in and not overwhelming, like the big pet supply stores. Definitely make a stop, it's fun just to stroll and I guarantee you'll find something unique!
