The place was nice and obviously smelled like a giant cat room, which is to be expected. We went to adopt a cat from a pet store that they sent out there etc. I understand they need to make sure everything is trustworthy with us but the amount of steps it takes to get a cat is a little too much and could go somewhere else for adoption and get it much quicker with same process. We waited 3 days for response back. Which once again it's not that bad. Buttttt then we get approved to adopt the cat. Every other adoption place I go through lets me take the cat home from the pet store and I sign some papers and pay and leave. Now we have to meet up with someone to finalize it from this company. Just too many steps. Almost week and a half just to get a cat. read more

Years ago I had to travel for work and wanted to get a neighborhood feral cat fixed. The manager loaned me a complimentary trap to catch the cat and picked him up from my house the next day. She returned the cat to the area promptly. That cat turned out to be a wonderful pet. He loves to be held and follows me everywhere. I have adopted 5 cats from Colony Cats- 2 were kittens, 2 were teens and 1 was an adult. The one teen cat was sick when we got her but I took her back to Colony Cats and they were able to give me additional meds for her and she has been fine ever since. The other teen cat ended up having some serious bone issues and sadly, had to be put down. I still have the 4 cats (plus one older one) and they all get along great and are wonderful kitties. I'm not a big reviewer, but I was reading all the negative reviews and decided I needed to add what I thought. Colony Cats, in my opinion, does a great service to the area. They help get kitties off the streets and prevent additional unwanted cats by fixing all the kitties. They try to find all the kitties good homes by having a vet make sure the kitty is healthy and if not, doing what they can to help them and they vet potential cat owners. All cats are microchipped too in case the cats gets lost (or abandoned). All the people there are volunteers and give their time so that they kitties can hopefully find good homes or in a few instances, live out their lives in a safe environment. Someone complained about the litter needing changing. They don't change the litter when people are there - at least I have never seen them so they do it when the shelter is closed. They do a good job in my estimation. My kids (and yes, me) still want to go there semi-regularly just to see the kitties. 5 is my max at home so we just get to look and play with the kitties. Their facebook page is updated regularly with kitties available for adoption. Sometimes, they ask for monetary help with kitties that have a lot of medical expenses. So, in conclusion, I think Colony Cats is great and I'm very thankful for all the volunteers who really want to help these kitties. As someone who has several kitties adopted from there, I am grateful. I have some really good ones. read more

As others have mentioned, this shelter has a great design, allowing cats to socialize, meet guests, or hide away as they see fit. They do keep kittens and juvenile cats separated, which is very nice. We actually went in to meet a few kittens, and just didn't feel that immediate connection. On our way out, an adult cat literally grabbed us and made quite an impression. We ended up taking her home and have been so happy for it. Is it a pristine building, no... It's got the little scars and scrapes of a place where many cats have found a temporary home. But that's really not a negative... Cats are cats, they claw, climb, scratch and rub instinctively, and seeing this place allow and even encourage that, just makes it feel like a happier place. As a place built primarily for the cats, it is SO much nicer than a wall of sterile metal cages. Further, the volunteer staff is obviously passionate about what they do, and all cats on site seemed to be in excellent care. When we got our new furry friends medical records, she'd had all the essentials, and then some. Overall, there is just a lot thoughtfulness and care in how everything is handled here. In 2022 the shelter took in and adopted: 1,782 Kittens: 975 Adult Cats: 671 Senior Cats: 76 Puppies: 37 Adult Dogs: 21 Senior Dogs: 2 Barn Cats that were placed: 93 TNR Cats that were neutered: 685+ and feral cats were supplied with winter shelter and support. The law of averages says half of the feral cats were female. Within an average female's seven child bearing years, she and her female descendants are capable of producing 420,000 kittens. That's the progeny of one cat, not the 340 or so TNRs Colony fixed this year. Add to that the number of female kittens (who can bear a litter at 4 months) and the adult females that were adopted this year, and the total figure is astronomical. While some reviewers have negative comments about the health of these animals, a high number of these cats came to them with injuries and illnesses that would have otherwise resulted in their deaths. Not only did they provide care for them but they also rescued dozens of kittens that had to be nurtured through their early days. Anyone who has a pet recognizes the high cost of caring for a single animal, but this charitable organization helps hundreds of felines (and canines) annually. They do an incredible job with limited resources. Dedicated leadership, a host of volunteers, and private donations and fund-raisers make this possible and we should be grateful for the work they do. read more

I want to update my review for anyone that has read this or will read in the future just to emphasize my points made in the original review. I went to Colony Cats and expressed my concerns to the staff, even speaking to the director. Not one person there seemed to care enough about my situation to or the other cats in the facility. I expressed that he was sick and in the room with other cats and they let me know that they were not going to be taking any additional steps to check the cats he was in contact with. Additionally, after his respiratory issues were cleared it was discovered that he has secondary liver disease and potentially stomach cancer. He now has a feeding tube and his outlook is less than positive. He is on 10 different medications and a strict feeding schedule just to sustain him. All of this, just for him to likely have to be put down in a few weeks. Please be sure to read up on this place. My vet mentioned that this is unfortunately not a rare case with Colony Cats and that most of the cats that they see coming from there are very sick and need a lot of additional care. I would never recommend adopting from here again and it's truly a shame to see that these cats are not getting any sort of true treatments and care. Take your business to Cozy Cat Cottage. They put months of time into cats before they are even allowed to be adopted out. They are isolated and see vets extensively before even being considered for adoption. Save yourself the time, money, and heartbreak and stay away from this place. read more

Colony Cats provides a noble service however, the novelty of their cage free center quickly wears off once you realize that the cat you've adopted is likely unhealthy and in need of follow up treatment. The kitten we brought home ended up at the vet with what appeared to be the leftover symptoms of a kitty cold from being in a high volume cat environment, a partially lapsed anus, and build up in her ears from dead ear mites. On the day we adopted her we asked about her anus and were told we might need to put vaseline on it but that they would check with their medical director who said to "just keep an eye on it." We took her to a follow-up appt at a local vet recommended by Colony Cats that said that she was not contagious and we were fine to begin face-to-face introductions with our other two cats. Fast forward two weeks. One of our current cats contracted calicivirus, a nasty viral infection that causes ulcers in the mouth and nose. This led to an eye infection, UTI, and diarrhea. We ended up hospitalizing him for fluids and monitoring-totally stressful. $436 later and we aren't even out of the woods yet however, he is starting to show improvements. When I contacted the medical director to ask if Colony Cats would be willing to provide any kind of compensation for the medical costs incurred considering our current cat more than likely contracted the virus from our newly adopted kitty, the director was rude, dismissive, and instead of offering any sympathy she questioned our current vet's health plan and undermined the treatment that our cat is receiving. Also, turns out she isn't even medically trained but somehow manages to be the "medical director"? Although we love our new kitty and look forward to a long life with her, we would have done things differently knowing what we do now. I would strongly recommend anyone looking to adopt a cat to consider shelters that are better managed and that take care to provide cats that are healthy. read more

She was wonderful and I would've been her volunteer but I had many medical issues that wouldn't let me. So I do crafting and donated things I'd make and just other stuff for her to sell in her cat boutique. Now I can't even talk to a real person at Colony Cats(aka) mona mckinnis let alone mona herself. First of all, I absolutely love this place. They really do the best to try to get all of their cats the help they need. However, I can completely appreciate where a lot of these reviews are coming from. With so many cats in a relatively small space, it can be difficult to be sure they are all receiving utmost attention for common shelter-borne illness (URI, worms, etc.). I can also understand where those are coming from with the difficulties in communication. It took me 3 or so weeks to hear back from the two places I was considering fostering at and that was quite unfortunate. However, now I have two of the most amazing cats the world could offer. I have also volunteered with them, and everyone does their best to help out in any way they can. They have great community engagement and it shows. Maybe someday they'll be able to afford an even larger sanctuary to help even more furry friends. However, in the meantime, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take your cat(s) to the vet as SOON as you adopt them. Because they are coming from a free-roam shelter, they probably have some kind of illness (nothing major, but the longer you wait the worse it gets). I'm not saying this to give them a pat on the back, that really needs to be worked on, but you should also do what's best for your cat and get them checked right after you adopt! read more

Yes, sure...very nice staff indeed, and to a point; helpful. Their program appears to be successful and a positive force in the community. But in the last 12 hours since adopting a 2-yr old female cat from them, I've learned a large amount of information about how the TRUE health/safety situation is in what they refer to as "free-range" environment... and the perceived "feel" when one is inside their doors. Yes, they have a "quarantine" room and a young-kitten room which is separated from the general colony. However the cat I just got is quite sick and highly-contagious...according to my personal Vet (with highest credentials and years of wide-ranging experience). Feline Herpes is AIR-borne and easily-spread through the colony. This one I picked is presently contagious, as well as an ear infection (yeast + cocci) and on top of this-- an upper respiratory infection. My vet gave this cat a dose of "Viralyse" right on the spot this morning. I just spent $83. with my Vet since Colony is unavailable until 4:30 this afternoon. The final GIGANTIC concern; my present cat is in danger already from this event and I'm in the process of sterilizing many areas of the house and carrier's inside, of course. Colony needs to re-assess their "free-range" concept for concern of this air-borne threat. They had no idea this cat I just got... is multi-infected. BUYER BEWARE! read more

The volunteers for this rescue operation are work tirelessly to find a great home for these animals. I arrived early to meet and great a rescue pup and saw three volunteers sweeping and cleaning the faculty. Each person stopped for a moment to reach down and pet or soothe a cat as they worked. They did not know anyone was paying attention to their caring and diligence to making a nice temporary home for these cats. Bravo to the volunteers! read more

This organization has been extremely frustrating for us. We adopted our first cat from Colony Cats a couple years ago and while we love our baby, he came home from the ***open*** adoption center with fleas and ringworm. We recently adopted our second cat, and we were still optimistic about Colony Cats because of the help that we believe they offer their cats, however because of our last experience decided to adopt through their fostering program because we thought a cat in one of their foster homes might have fewer health issues. The second time around, they were extremely thorough in their adoption process. To a ridiculous & tedious point, in my personal opinion. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge cat lover and appreciate that they take care in their process. However, they just really made it very difficult to adopt a cat, which I understand to an extent, but at a certain point it honestly becomes ridiculous. We are past adopters with a cat who, as our vet said, is still perfectly healthy now at 5 years old. I don't see why every time we gave them the information they asked for, there was more information they needed. Leases, address confirmations, landlord phone numbers, etc. It was just very frustrating this time around, and after our health problems last time, we will probably sadly not be adopting from Colony Cats again. read more

I decided to adopt a cat from Colony Cats and at first, I was okay with the process. Most of the volunteers are friendly and willing to assist you. After taking my new cat home, they recommend that you take your new cat to your family vet for a check up after the cat adjusted. I did indeed take him to the vet after 2 months because he had horrible smelling poop and he was constantly hungry with no improvement. I originally thought it was because of the food change but instead I found out that he had round worms and gave it to my other cat as well. Colony Cats claim they take care of their cats but do not. When I asked for any sort of reimbursement and they refused. When you buy a cat there, they claim the animal is healthy without infections, etc. They even say if the cat is not, they will fix it. Complete lie. They wanted me to trust them to provide medication (they claim it's because they can get it cheap... my apologies if I don't want medicine from who knows where) for my cat instead of my trusted vet who I KNEW would take care of my animals. In addition, they were rude and very snarky about the situation when they promised a healthy cat and would fix it if he was not. If they did their job in the first place, I would not be in this mess. I love the open cage idea, but there are other places in Columbus that provide a TRUE healthy environment for the cats. The only good thing about the situation is my new cat is happy, FINALLY healthy, and has a brand new home where he is loved. read more

We adopted our cat here 10 years ago. He is a precious family member and we can't imagine a day without him. Unfortunately, he has been sick since day 1 with what the has been called a 'kennel cough'. He wheezes and sneezes and always has a runny nose. We've tried many medications from vets including a combination viral and bacterial medicine. He cannot be cured. We love him so much and wish he could have a day without sickness. I don't think colony cats deserves 1-2 stars for the sick cats or the spread of disease amongst the cats. I know cat breeders can be worse. You can pay $500 for a 'pure bred' cat from a store and they will have worse living conditions. I also know feral cats die and over populate needlessly. Do they get 5 stars? No, not really. That is for the people that are perfect. What is the perfect solution? I don't know? Maybe rooms of cats that are grouped by illness? But who is going to pay for that? 3-4 stars is right for this place in my opinion. They have an excellent mission statement, they are doing good in the world. They are trying. read more

We took in a stray cat several years ago. She passed away in late winter. My daughter volunteers at Colony Cat and suggested we visit and see if a cat took to us. We knew we could never replace our beloved cat, but decided a way to honor her was to open our hearts and home to another wonderful cat. Colony Cats is a set up like no other I have experienced. The cats roam free, they climb, they sleep, they wander. There are several "rooms" within the strip center location. As a no kill shelter, they don't turn cats away and every time I have been there to visit, someone is dropping off a cat or dog they have found or they no longer want to keep. The dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to feed, care for and place all of these animals that have been turned away, lost, or placed in a kill shelter. As an all volunteer enterprise, there are many people coming and going. The core group of volunteers do an excellent job of organizing those who come to work for an afternoon. My daughter goes with a neighbor on the hardcore cleaning day and they work hard every Friday to deep clean. This is on top of the routine daily cleaning chores. To those leaving negative reviews about cleaning-- I suggest you volunteer-- take a walk in those shoes, then reflect on your experiences. It's easy to post a snide review on a more or less anonymous site. But what have you done to help solve the problems. Colony Cats is not a business-- it is a volunteer organization dedicated to the care of abandoned cats. If you have expertise and a willingness to help make improvement, I suggest you do, instead of writing negative reviews, being hyper critical of those who are volunteering their time. My children have decided to volunteer. I am unable to be around that many cats for any length of time, but I do plan to volunteer in other ways. I will also point out that most of the cats that come to Colony Cats have had a rough start. They have been thrown out, abandoned, neglected. My neighbor who fosters cats regularly with Colony Cats, spends a tremendous amount of time treating the kitties for ringworm and other parasites. This is a sad reflection on the state the cats coming to the shelter. When we took in our stray years ago, she had fleas, she had worms and it was a process getting her parasite free. Back to our new love bug. We went several times. We had a cat in mind to meet, and we did meet him. We didn't click, so we went back several more times, meeting several cats and then our dear girl, who was super shy and sweet, popped out and said-- I am the one you are have been waiting for, in fact I have been waiting for you for months. The adoption application was easy, the process smooth and I picked up our sweet girl, she had just seen the vet, gotten all her boosters and was ready to go. She did have a sneeze, it is common for cats living with so many other cats to have the sniffles. The volunteers at Colony Cats explained what I should watch for, I did and I got some medicine for her and she is doing just fine. My suggestion is that if you are looking for cat, check this Colony Cats out. Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days. Friday night a close second. Take a weekday evening and go visit. Get to know the cats. Talk to several volunteers. Take some time to get to know the cats. You can complete the paperwork at home, it is tight quarters in the office area. Come to understand what the volunteers are doing. Invest in the process. Be prepared to take your new friend to vet. Be prepared to have to work to socialize your new friend to your home. Taking on a cat is a process and a commitment. We found love at Colony Cats! You can too, if you are realistic and open minded. If you have suggestions or think you could do it better. Volunteer. I'm truly surprised by a lot of the reviews here. I wanted to check out this place for a long time after I'd donated online a few times but I just never got the chance to stop. When I finally did, I was pretty bummed. The cats are free to roam in the building and there are a ton, at least 100, if not more. Almost every cat had a runny nose, truly. Many had runny eyes and I heard a ton of sneezing the whole time. It was a very sad experience. The website claims these animals are completely vetted but there is no way that is fully accurate. They kept some cats/kittens inside cages in little rooms but some of the doors were still open for other cats to enter. I asked and was told some of them were sick so they were separating them..but they weren't actually separated. While the thought of cats in shelters in cages in so sad, I don't think this place is any better. I completely understand the thought that "at least they aren't outside or dead" but it's obvious some of these animals are suffering and/or in pain. But this place is a hoarding situation; there are simply too many cats crammed into one small building.The volunteers at the desk at the back had little knowledge about the animals. Even so, I commend you volunteering for any animal rescue as I'm sure it's an incredibly difficult job. All this being said, I still absolutely suggest if you are looking to adopt a cat, please adopt one here. Please do not buy, always adopt! But please take your new family member to a vet before going home (especially if you have other animals). I immediately came home and washed my clothes and showered before touching any of my animals, afraid to transfer anything:( Please be sure to check the "unrecommended" reviews as they are all pretty accurate of my experience as well. When we found a cat that had been literally dumped in our back yard, we searched for a no-kill shelter who could take him. After several weeks, the team at Colony Cats were able to take him in, get him fixed, checked out by a vet, and adopted into a new home. Their setting in a strip mall is unusual, but I have to note that the environment is a lot better now than some of the early reviews. I think they've added more volunteers and do more work with cleaning and sanitization. There's no problem with smells or cat litter when we visited, and all of the cats in their center seem happy, socialized, and well cared for. read more

The volunteers at Colony Cats are very passionate about their mission - to reduce the overpopulation of cats in central Ohio and to find loving homes for the cats in their care. That being said, they are all volunteers and the rescue survives on donations alone - so is the adoption center perfect? No - but there is a team of volunteers that clean it EVERY DAY to try to make the adoption experience the best it can be. Are some of the cats sick (runny noses/sneezing)? Yes - and any cat that seems to have more than just a simple cold is removed from the adoption floor and treated accordingly. Lovely people here. They let us wander around and meet the cats and made suggestions that aligned with the type of kitty we wanted. I like that they quizzed me on the type of food and supplies I got for my new cat. It let's me know they want their cats to go to a nice home. My only "complaint" was that most of the cats are sleeping when we visited at 2:00. Not that the staff can do anything about that. Maybe ask if there's a time of day where they're most active? Thankfully their cat Diamond was awake and following us all around the place. We took her home and we couldn't be happier. She's litter box trained, seemingly disease free (we'll see at this weekends vet visit) and the most affectionate cat I've ever met. Let me start by saying. I have Not adopted from them but stopped in to donate items and money at their donation event. I walked into their boutique to browse for a moment. I know it can be difficult to clean with a large number of cats but the boutique reeked of cat urine. No way I was buying anything in there. I've been to other rescues and Humane Societies that are much cleaner. There was a person on the sidewalk waiting for someone from the rescue to speak to them. There was some kind of disagreement over a cat. The person from the rescue was very rude. This situation should have been handled in a more private manner, not on the sidewalk during an event. This left a very bad impression with me. I will never deal with or donate to this rescue again. read more

Wonderful shelter/organization! I adopted my Gigi (formerly Gidget) from them. She's such a wonderful cat. Super friendly and well acclimated to other cats, people and animals. She has been a joy! I can't say enough about the staff and how helpful they were. The adoption center is large and the cats are generally free to roam about to be social. There are plenty of staff to ask questions. Mona and her volunteers are the best! I had 2 semi feral cats that adopted me. Before I could trap them and get them fixed, the female had 3 kittens. I didn't want them living in the alley because a neighbor had a pit bull that constantly got loose and someone recommended I call Colony Cats. I brought the kittens inside and got them used to people. I paid to have them fixed and Colony Cats saved the kittens by taking them into the Adoption Center to find a safe and loving home. Cute cats, rude people. I adopted my cat from this shelter a few years ago with no issues other than most of the staff seemed very disengaged with the potential adopters that were looking for their new family members. Understandable, everyone was completely engrossed in all the cats anyway. However I came back a year later with some friends looking to adopt their own cat, I recommended this shelter to them because I love my cat dearly and wanted them to find one just as perfect. While they were looking, I told the staff about how I adopted my cat from there a year ago and he is perfect for me and my dog and the best addition to our family I could have ever hoped for. They were completely disinterested, didn't look up from their computers once and barely acknowledged me. Again, rude but understandable, they may have had a long day. I work retail, I know how that goes sometimes. Then my friends found an adult cat they loved, filled out an application, the woman in charge looked at it right there and completely blew up on them. They wrote on their application that they have an in tact dog, which is simply because they were being responsible owners and not getting her spayed until 2 years of age, which is healthiest for the dog (do some research). The woman completely lost her cool, lectured them on all the dogs dying in shelters every day due to irresponsible owners and told them their application was going to be denied. We all went in there excited to give a loving forever home to a cat and left feeling completely terrible. I've never recommended them again, and since then more people have shared their horror stories with me about the completely rude staff there. It breaks my heart because while I love cats and would love to donate to such a good cause, I can't bring myself to after the staff was so blatantly disrespectful to my very responsible friends. Spoiler alert: Their dog is now spayed, has zero puppies, and they have a great cat from Delaware County Humane Society. read more

While I'm grateful that we have two girls who we love and the volunteers that were there the day we decided to adopt were helpful and friendly, the health of our cats and the lack of response from any CC worker post adoption is why I do not recommend adopting from CC. Our kittens seemed perfectly healthy when we adopted them. After a few days, they started showing symptoms of sickness. Both kittens had been sneezing and coughing, but it kept getting worse. The going home information they give to new owners gives a list of symptoms to look out for and if they start showing them within 14 days of going home to text a number. I texted the number- no response. My fiancé called the number- no response. After a few days, one kitten had a really runny nose and eyes, sneezing like crazy and the other started having what looked like seizures. We had to run both of them to a vet ER. A kitten having seizures is an extremely scary experience and we just couldn't wait to take them. Bottom line of the situation- one had an URI, the other that was seizing (which turned out to be vertigo) had a severe ear infection. I called and left a voicemail for the main number listed for the Colony Cats shelter the day after all this went down- again no response. The going home information said that we could get medical treatment for the cats if we used one of their veterinarians, but how are we supposed to use this service if no one responds to us? Also it's sad that they offer a number to text and say "we will respond and advise you", but do not respond. Because of the health conditions of our cats and having no choice but to take our kittens to an ER, we ended up with about $1500 out of our pocket. The cats are now healthy, but the whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth for a shelter that I thought I would have a great experience at. Additionally, the cleanliness of the place could use some work. The three times we visited there was poop sitting on the wire ceiling of the kitten enclosure and it was still there when we went back to adopt. Another time we saw cats that were clearly sick but were free to roam around the entire shelter. I understand it's volunteer run and resources are stretched thin but please don't let the sick animals run around and get other cats infected. read more

I wish I read these reviews before I adopted my little kitty but his face stole my heart. Just like other reviews, he seemed perfectly healthy, but after a couple of days he started sneezing a lot and his eyes were squinty. My vet said he had an upper respiratory infection. We treated that. He carried the herpes virus which is dormant in him but my older cat caught it from him and broke out badly. We treated her. I noticed a lump in my rescue kitty's belly. He had a hernia. We had surgery to fix that. 4 months go by, I think I'm in the clear, I noticed his eyes are yellow and foggy, he has loss of appetite and energy. I took him to the vet and they tell me he has FIP, an untreatable disease he got while at the shelter, and he only has a week to live. I have to put my sweet boy down tomorrow. I will never adopt from colony cats again. read more

Way too many cats here to guarantee the health for any of the cats. It's hit or miss. All employees mean well. And they're doing a good service. But who knows what you'll get. Fleas. Tapeworms. Upper respiratory infection. Very likely. Ear mites. Yes. Go to the vet and get everything taken care of. Your chances are better health wise. read more

We got our cat from here last year and couldn't recommend them more! When we found out our cat had ear mites the vet on site took him back and got rid of them free of charge. They then told us to follow-up with them in a week to make sure they were all gone. They also taught us how to trim our cats nails (since we were first time cat owners) and how to put together our cat carrier.
