The vending machines were filthy in the vending area. There was a wall of festival guides and tourists attractions. And a fold out display of Indiana trivia - draws mild interest. The upside - restrooms are super clean. There is a picnic pavilion and green space to walk a dog. The vending area carries both Coke and Pepsi products. Long story short.....a good place to relieve yourself or dog and that's about it.

So, this little rest stop is really a 3 or 4 star establishment. 4 stars because it's always pretty clean. 3 stars simply because it's small and doesn't offer a lot. BUT... both Indiana and Ohio decided to work on their rest areas at the same dang time, and apparently, my opinion did not make it into the docket of either state's government. 200 miles with no rest area. Awesome. So, guess what little buddy?? You're getting an upgrade! 5 stars because you are actually open for business. Well, done. (Update: Ohio's welcome center on I-70 is back open after months, but I didn't know this at the start of my trip.) Ok, today's playlistbecause you can learn a lot about a person not only from the type of music they like, but their road trip mix. That's not always the same thing! At least not for me, I listen to some random shiz that pops into my head when I'm on the road. I digress. I started with O.A.R. I am not a big "jam band" person, but I've always liked OAR a lot more than Dave. If you're curious, listen to the XX album. It's basically a greatest hits and has some of my favorite live tracks (Night Shift that leads into Stir It Up with an actual member of The Wailers). That lead me to a theme: songs with strings, horns and/or piano. I love rock with strings! And horns take me back to my love of ska music in the early 2000's. (I refrained from listening to any ska today because that would lead down a different rabbit hole). Led Zeppelin's Kashmir (just a perfect mix of strings and guitar. Led Zeppelin is also my favorite rock band of all time) Some of Metallica's S&M album. I'm not the biggest Metallica fan, but the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra on Nothing Else Matters is perfection! I seriously got goosebumps listening. For horns, I went with Paul Simon's You Can Call Me Al. A goofy little ditty with infectious horns. One of my favorite piano-heavy songs is Feelin' Alright by Joe Cocker. Whenever I hear this song, it makes me want to take up piano, again. At some point in my life, I WILL learn to play that breakdown at the 2:20 mark. Mark my words! Then, my mind went blank! Four decades of music knowledge, and I couldn't think of any other songs that featured strings or horns or piano that I wanted to hear. So, I took a hard left and turned to Dinosaur Jr. and somehow that led to Bush. I really love Bush! (Yep, the band, too) They were one of my favorite late 90's rock bands and Machinehead was my favorite modern rock song for a long time. Alright, that's my 15 cents for today. I need it back so I can get that dollar!

Like others in Indiana, it was clean from litter and bathrooms were decent. There are vending machines and picnic tables. Easy access from the interstate with a sweeping turn that would slow people down as they enter. The shape of the center lends itself to shade trees for cars (not so much the truck parking) if you were thinking of a brief siesta before continuing onwards. Kentucky needs to think like the aforementioned states regarding return on investment (ROI). Also, I believe the toilets were former movie or TV props for Prison Break or likely Escape from Alcatraz or similar. Edit: I believe it was Canada around Hamilton that offered rest areas that had a food court and shops like an airport terminal.

It's almost like walking through a small arboretum. Educational displays identify native trees, flowers, grasses, and shrubs, making it far more interesting than your typical interstate stop. Inside, the theme continues. The walls are filled with displays highlighting communities, attractions, parks, and destinations around Central Ohio and across the state. As you're heading north toward Columbus, it's almost like Ohio is introducing itself before you arrive. Most rest areas are places to make a quick stop and get back on the road. This one is worth taking a few extra minutes to explore. Nicely done, Ohio.
