I chose to do a 90 minute deep tissue massage with Janine and it was awesome! I liked that she instructed me to "breathe" with her work (I would breathe in when she removed the pressure with her hands and breathe out when she pressed down). I had a weird "hitch" in my shoulder and her attention to that issue made my range of motion so much better. She did something with smooth stones on either side of my spine (after she worked on me that relaxed my muscles even more) - just wonderful. I just got done with one of the best massages I have ever had in my life, and felt compelled to immediately share the magic that Janine possesses in her thoughtful technique. Janine is fan-freakin'-tastic. The room is impeccably clean, the music soothing, the massage therapeutic and relaxing. Janine did an excellent job of checking in with me (too hard? too gentle?) and answered my questions knowledgeably and with helpful post-massage advice. Janine gave me literally the best deep-tissue massage I have ever had. She worked on me at Breitenbush Hot Springs, where she practices when she's not practicing in Portland. Janine's technique involves using her feet as much (or more than) her hands, at least for my massage. I immediately noticed how well she uses the heel and arch of her foot as a massage tool, with her heel (and sometimes big toe, I think) very effective for acupressure/shiatsu points. She seemed to use her feet the most on the backs of my legs and all over my back; every single sore spot got what it needed. In addition to her great technique, Janine is warm, kind and friendly, both compassionate and full of gentle humor. We chatted a bit during the massage (it was 90 minutes), and I enjoyed the give-and-take. It felt intimate in safe, healthy and caring way. The environment for the massage was perfect. Janine had lovely music playing, very soft, and the oils she uses feel luxurious and smell nice, though not at all strong. The linens felt crisp and fresh, and I enjoyed the way she carefully folded them back or over me to keep me warm and modest during the massage. It was in the hours after the massage, and the next day, that I really felt the lasting effects. I felt light and grounded, quiet and energized, all at the same time. Do not come here. I repeat do not come here. The interior may be nice and the masseuse may be friendly but the massage definitely suck. She just moves her hands and pretend they are massaging. I really wish I that I would have been physically capable of paying homage to Janine's New York accent by proclaiming "LIKE BUTTAH!" every time she deftly applied pressure to my gnarled, knotted self-neglected mess of muscle and tissue, but such poor mimicry was not possible as she rendered me so buttery that about the only thing I could do was let the first syllable in "butter" quietly fade into unintelligible babble behind a mouthful of drool. A huge shout out to how relaxed and professional Janine is. Although I just met her today, I felt like I'd known her for years. Her space is CLEAN, soothing, and very feng shui (its located inside Lila Yoga Studio - which is awesome too). Janine is an excellent massage therapist. I've been really happy with her work. Her style of massage is a little different than many of the Seattle massage therpists, in that she was trained on the East coast, which I find to be a nice change!
