Who knew there's a hog feast worth celebrating this far north of the Iberian peninsula. This Oink location is nicely situated by the Holyrood Castle. Never thought that I would appreciate roasted hog this much this far north but I would go out on a limb to give it high recognition. The meat is seasoned well, the skin crispy, and if you're a late riser, you can have it for breakfast with delicious hagus and coffee. It goes without saying, public transportation is easiest way to get here besides walking. We saw Oink on Phil, Phil said great things about Oink... We thought it was just Ok... After our visiting the castle we were walking back uptown and ran into Oink and although we were not too hungry we had to stop back and grab a Pulled Pork Sandwich after out boy Phil had talked it up, we had to stop in. We got the Oink size sandwich (medium) with Sage & Onion and Homemade Chili Cheese. They wrapped it up and we went outside to get into it. Our first bite was a bit lackluster. We figured maybe we didn't everything in that bite but same on the second. The Sage & Onion and Homemade Chili Cheese did bring much to the table in flavor or spice and even the pork wasn't popping with flavor even. Maybe this is an American thing where we are used to super flavorful pulled pork. Trust me too I' not that guy either who needs sauce on my pork either. This was just a bit plain. It might have been a fluke so I don't want to give too low of a score but I really was let down by Oink. We stopped in because we say so many reviews about how great Oink is and were in need of a quick bite during some sight seeing. We grabbed a Sage and Onion Oink sandwich with chili jam and it was just dry. I think next time I would ask for extra sauce and maybe even grow a pair and try haggis. This location is way more accessible than the populated royal mile location, so we were happy to snag a bowl on day 2 in Edinburgh. The crackling skin was my fav (ordered extras as a side option!), and it was good haggis and apple sauce on the side. Loved this several years ago when I visited Edinburgh - but this last time I found it INCREDIBLY bland. No salt, barely any seasonings, and just not worth going back to. If you like seasoned food, I'd give it a skip. When stuffing, apple sauce, and several sauces can't save it, it's just not worth it to me. As I was walking through the grass market on vacation to Edinburgh recently, I saw people with these yummy looking sandwiches, but I was too shy to ask anyone where they got them. Fast-casual concept with delicious pulled pork. I hesitated to try out Oink because American-style barbecue in the touristy parts of Edinburgh seemed sketchy. I'm glad I took the risk. Oink's food is fabulous. There's really only one thing on the menu: pulled pork. They have one whole hog for the day. Once they run out of meat, they close up shop. So the opening hours you see on Yelp may not be exact. My advice is to come around noon for lunch. Once inside, the menu is very straightforward. You choose your portion of meat, your bread, your stuffing, and your sauce. I chose The Grunter (largest portion) with brown bread, haggis as the stuffing, and homemade chili jam as the sauce. It was ridiculously good. The meat was more moist and more flavorful than most American barbecue places. The sauce was phenomenal. My two criticisms are 1) the meat was a bit too salty, and 2) the crispy pork rind added into the sandwich was a bit of a chewing hazard. That rind is so sharp, it is like a shard of glass in the sandwich. Others in my group just picked it out of their sandwich. I think serving it on the side like potato chips would be safer. Stopped by recently for a Hog in a Box, and enjoyed my meal. The hog in a box is a good fix for those not wanting bread, while getting to try a very delicious meal. We got it with applesauce, and stuffing, but there are many other options for sauces, as well as haggis as a base. Wow the pulled pork is one of the best I've had anywhere. It reminds me of a great lechon with the crispy skin with a fragrant fresh porky flavor of the meat. I was worried. Was this another over-hyped place with a line that wouldn't match expectations? Thankfully no. This is a pulled pork place that gets it right on all fronts. It's mainly a takeaway place though there is room for some seats. You basically order the size (S,M,L), then get some pulled pork, then a stuffing and then toppings. The BBQ with the sage & onion one was our favorite, though the haggis stuffing and the chili cheese sauce was a close second. Only complaint is that it could use even more sauce at times. Walking back from a running event in Holyrood Park, I stumbled upon this great new location for Oink. It just opened today and isn't just a popup for the festival -- it's here to stay to bring a delicious quick lunch alternative to Holyrood! Although the location is small, it has slightly more seating than the original location on Victoria Street. It has the hog roast in one window and a great big table by the other window, and fresh new decor. My oink sandwich with crackling, sage and onion stuffing and apple chutney was delicious as always. The staff are super friendly and welcoming, too. As always with Oink, when the hog roast is gone it's gone for the day! Day seven of my Yelp Only first month in ol' Edina and I foolishly left the house without breakfast. After about three hours on the home hunt, I was exhausted, cranky and yet again, walking up a hill in high heels. Enter Oink. This place has been on my radar since day one. Being a "sandwich for all occasions" kind of gal, i'm attempting to find the best of the best and Oink seems to frequently top that list. I lucked out with no line up and my whole sandwich ordering, paying and guiltly sneaking my EPICALLY large sandwich out of the place, away from judging eyes took all of 7 minutes. Give or take. I had the The Grunter. How you're expected to order THAT with a straight face, i'll never know, but damn... it's a big sandwich. I put my first Oinker together with white bread, sage & onion and classic BBQ. First and foremost: ask for extra sauce. Yes, it will make an already messy meal moreso, but I think it'd be worth it. I trotted up the street and in my ladylike little sundress, plunked down on a bench and devoured the entire thing without stopping to take a breath. It's how this Canadian do. The verdict? Yeah. I'm down. The pulled pork is the right combination of moist, without being goopy and when the sauce soaks into it all, it's pretty darn fantastic. I did think there was a little too much pork to the add ons, I didn't even taste the sage & onion to tell you the truth but I daresay that is not such a problem with the smaller buns. What it is, is ridiculously big food for the money. A sandwich that kept me full until dinner and an iced tea ran me a measly $6. Shazam. Stopped in for a late lunch. I had a piglet, my friend had an oink, both with the sage dressing and homemade bbq sauce. The rolls were fresh and soft. The meat was very tender and flavorful. And fresh. So fresh that the pig your sandwich came from is featured in the front window. The gal working here was not very friendly or particularly nice. But she was efficient and got the job done, so on the service I would score 3 stars- average. But the quality of the food was excellent- 5 stars. Great pulled pork sandwiches. Perfect for a take to go meal or a quick sit down. The Bbq sauce was pretty good, and their unique sides to put on the sandwich like safe were tasty. They were central and perfect to grab a bite of you were heading over to the park or to simple hang out. Filling and really good value. I had the classic of classic flavours (sage and onion stuffing with pork and apple sauce all over it!). It was on a standard roll of which you can choose from brown or white (I choose Brown). Really tasty. Both rolls came to under £8 all together. We were have meats sweats after it though! Enough seating. Mum was happy with her coffee as she claimed she enjoyed it! I'm not sure about the brand of peach iced tea for my choice. Really enjoyed the roll. Mum did too - her choice was haggis, pork and tomato chilli sauce! You can get crackling as an extra and totally forgot to ask for that in my moment of excitement.
