The lady working the gym today was such a buzz kill. I am all about following the rules and being safe especially in a climbing environment. We were told two rules at the beginning. Harness and shoes must be worn in rope areas and the bouldering area is off limits to 5 and under and that was changing soon. Icing on the cake was the pretentious tone she gave my young son and I by stating that he wouldn't enjoy climbing as he is being put in a harness. Way to set him up for success by saying a negative comment before he even gets to try it. Remember boulderdash staff what you say around kids they absorb. Words have a huge impact. You might "teach" children in your classes but not all children are the same. I've never been to a climbing gym that a manager can go climb with friends and family for hours. She wasn't supervising who was coming in and out and what was happening throughout the gym. When said manager did decide to come around she was randomly yelling at our kids or us for not doing things she never told us about in the first place. One star for the power trip employee with a negative attitude. One star for the cleanliness of the facility. It could use a deep cleaning. Sanitizer stations would be good. The lady working chased and almost grabbed my child for accidentally walking in the restroom with her climbing shoes to wash her hands. Again I understand it's the rules and we followed the rules given. That was one moment a child forgot and a parent was standing up to stop the child from going in. The gym had plenty of beginner routes and top ropes. Boulder area could use improvements. The weight station is a joke. A few free weights and kettle bells crammed in a corner. We will stick with climbing outdoors. After all it is Southern California.

We spent 2 hours talking about climbing, learning and practicing tying knots, rigging safety gear and harnesses. Working on our belay and braking techniques, and ultimately putting it all together and rotating through top rope climbing, belaying, and observation of the other class members. At the 2 hour mark we had a firm grip, pun intended, on top rope belay and safety. Unfortunately we weren't able to take our belay test that day. The gym policy is that students need to come back a different day to test their skills and knowledge. If I was local I would have come back and taken my test. But I am confident that I have the practice and knowledge to test at my local rock climbing gym and get certified. And that was the ultimate purpose of my trip. I didn't tour the whole gym because I was focused on the class and learning the ropes, again pun intended, so I can't speak to everything. The front of the gym, the climbing walls, and men's restroom were all clean and tidy. The staff were helpful and friendly. The overall vibe was really positive. There were auto belay climbing areas as well as top rope and bouldering. The next time I am in the area I hope to spend more time at Santa Barbara rock gym to really explore the facilities and climbing walls. Also I had a little trouble finding the parking lot. It's behind the gym and accessed from a side street. The parking lot is shared with REI and several other businesses.

Cuts some time out. Pretty clean gym and not too busy for a Saturday early afternoon.

If you visit from Dec to May you will see 7 little distinct waterfalls, all flowing into small pools, directly one after another. The waterfalls have been attracting visitors since the 1800s. The trail to reach the falls is about 3-miles out-and-back. Navigating the different trails can be a little tricky and involves multiple trails and unsigned forks so you may want to use AllTrails app as your guide. The first mile you'll walk along an uphill paved road with some really nice ocean views. After you pass a bridge and then a trail kiosk you'll take a left at the fork. After passing Mission Creek you'll take another left up a steep and rocky incline. Eventually you'll reach the point where you'll need to take a sharp right and head downhill to the canyon floor. You can use the assistance of a rope that's attached to a tree. Climbing up the first waterfall is pretty easy but the next 6 should only be attempted with caution. It's best to visit from Dec to May, preferably after a good rain. It's a popular destination so it's best to visit early on a weekday. Parking is limited.

The views, the water, the whole experience felt unreal. It's one of those hikes that actually feels like an adventure instead of just a walk. Exhausting but so fun, and I'd 1000000% do it again.

Waterproof hiking shoes, trekking poles, plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and an offline map are highly recommended. We arrived around 7:00 AM and were lucky to find parking. The lot closest to the trailhead only holds about 10-15 cars, so I highly recommend arriving early, especially on weekends. If it's full, you'll likely need to park across the street or along the nearby side streets. Download the offline map before you start. I used AllTrails, and it was a lifesaver. It's surprisingly easy to get off the trail despite the diamond trail markers on the rocks and the blue arrows along the route. Without the offline map, we most likely would have added a lot more time trying to find the correct path. There are multiple Punch Bowls along the trail. The largest one, with the famous natural rock slide, is about 4 miles from the trailhead. More than halfway through the hike, you'll encounter a steep incline. Reaching the rock slide also requires climbing over large rocks, so having good upper-body strength, balance, and proper footwear really helps, as it can get tricky getting to the other side. The only downside was seeing graffiti, litter, and even someone using a grill with an open fire along the trail, which is a serious fire hazard. It's heartbreaking to see such a beautiful place not being respected. I hope the National Forest continues to protect this area by enforcing fire restrictions, increasing recycling and trash facilities where appropriate, and encouraging visitors to leave no trace. This is truly a hidden gem that deserves to be preserved for future generations.

How have I never been here before…read more... Sunday with no plans on the book. Let's take a drive to Frazier Park and go hiking. Same with that, never been to this little town as well. It's literally off the 5 freeway a couple miles in and you at the town. It was about half hour or 45 minutes drive up the mountain from the freeway till where the mountain start. There's different sections that you could go to if you wanted to hike or camp. We didn't really know where and what trails there was. Just ended up at of the campsite parking lot and went from there. There's loads of trails to choose from. Theres sign at the base that'll tell you the levels of hike and the distance. Also, the path was pretty wide on the one we were at which was nice. Right when you get out of the car, you could already smell the difference in air quality. Mountain air, being in nature with all the beautiful trees and noise of the birds. This place was beautiful. The path was nice to walk, slightly uphill and not hard. We passed loads of people but it still felt very quiet as you're in the woods. There's still loads of wildflowers growing. Temperature wise, it was perfect as your at a higher elevation and there was also nice breeze. Just walking and seeing all the beautiful trees, some covered in moss. The chipmunks running past you along the paths, it's a completely different experience from the hustle and bustle of the city. The views were amazing. When you get to the lookout point where the tower is, there was two tins/cans along the rocks that you could leave a message. Notebook and pen was provided for signing. This particular trail wasn't hard even though it said it was but very manageable. About 2 miles each way. But the views along and at the top of the lookout was spectacular. It's amazing that an hour or so from the city, there's so many hidden gems. Nature is beautiful if you haven't noticed. And another place for hiking on our lists.

We love the quietness and solitude you find here. The trees and winds make this beautiful sound. I honestly think this place is sacred. We have camped at McGill Campground and have hiked up to Mt. Pinos. Only about an hour drive from Los Angeles/Santa Clarita. The forest does get snow fall and I think we just had the first big dump of snowfall last night.

I contacted Alex looking for personal instruction on sport leading, trad climbing, and building top roping anchors using trad placement and I left learning everything I wanted to and flashing my first sport route and onsite'ing (basically I didn't fall on my first ascent) my first trad lead. I had a year of previous experiencing mostly top roping and Alex was excellent at assessing my skill level and offering advice. A huge bonus is Alex has bolted routes at Sespe and Wheelers gorge and he uses those for teaching so his beta (belayer's advice to the lead climber on where to look for holds) Is spot on and he doesn't just tell you how to climb the route he lets you experiment a bit. I will say you will get the most out of Alex's instruction if you do your homework prior to meeting him at the crag, only because you can only do some much in one day and you'll defiantly want to maximize you time climbing; but Alex is more than capable covering that material anyway. (Go to the climbing section of REI or A16 and ask a sales person about what book covers the skills you want to learn). All in all new climbers, experienced climber looking for more technical skill, people climbing for the first time, and people looking for guided trips look no further! Alex is truly the Best out there! My son, who is a Boy Scout, has gained a passion for climbing. We were looking for someone to guide him in learning more about this sport that he has come to love and found Alex Bury online. As with anything you do online, you never know what you are going to get. We set up an excursion for our 13 year old son and his best friend to go climbing with Alex. They did a full day of climbing with him. They could not stop talking about how great it was! He was very patient with the boys and displayed the utmost professionalism and knowledge! My husband and I came to Ojai for a conference and wanted to squeeze in vacation time. We had never been rock climbing before and could not have asked for a better first day! Alex is an extremely knowledgeable, experienced, certified rock climbing instructor. He grew up in Ojai and has been climbing for 15 years. The entire day was fantastic from start to finish. We never felt unsafe and learned a lot. Alex is both professional and pleasant. It was just the right amount of fun and challenge. We can't wait to go again and will bring the kids with us next time. My family and I had a fantastic afternoon climbing with Alex. Originally it was just going to be my husband and kids (10 and 8) as I didn't think I would enjoy it but I decided to stay and watch and Alex encouraged me to give it a go. He is passionate about what he does and clearly enjoys helping people (whatever their prior experience, if any, and level of fitness) experience the sport and enjoy it. He found just the right way to build up all our confidence, such that we were ALL able to scale a 110ft rock face at the end of the afternoon. We were amazed! What an amazing day my sister and I had with Alex. She is an experienced climber and I have only climbed once or twice in a gym over 20 years ago. In addition, I have a weak left leg and Alex was amazing encouraging and coaching me during the climbs. I managed to do much more than I thought I could do thanks to him. Alex is AWESOME. I go climbing once a year... it has always been hard and terrifying, and really just a way to spend some cool quality time with my dad. Each time was at a different spot - it's so valuable going with a guide who knows the area so well. But this week I popped in to peek at the Senior dance class and was truly amazed.. the same coach, Coach Stacy is conducting the class and it was a full house. This class was so energetic and I stayed to watch with my jaw on the ground. Besides the coordination and energy of the group, they were all so thrilled to be there. The whole vibe was effervescent with laughter and high fives. I was exhausted just watching them. Even if I had the energy, I don't know if I could remember the moves. Coach Stacy goes above and beyond with her groups. She's patient, encouraging, and acknowledges your abilities. I saw that she supplies her senior class with printouts of the dances so they could practice at home. In my case, she is my biggest cheerleader. I used to need a spot just to get onto the trampoline or beam. Please try one of these classes, I believe the drop in price for senior dance is $5 and the adult gymnastic cost is $10. She is truly a dedicated spirit and a treasure in the community.

He was our guide but even before that he was great. Super friendly and helpful. We walked around the ranch prior to our ride. All the horses seemed so happy and friendly. They all wanted to chat. The ride was great. Again, Dillon was super helpful on the ride. My son rode Dutch and I rode Mira. Amazing horses. My son cannot stop talking about Dutch. I cannot recommend this company enough.

One the most distinguished is the looming mountain range visible from all points north of the Grade, known as the Topa Topa Bluffs. The granite cliffs mark pronounced diagonal etches across the mountains face. Often when one thinks of going to the mountains, these are the mountains one had in mind. Usually when venturing into the Los Padres National Forest the highest Mecca available is Reyes Peak atop Pine Mountain road, and that is where we often end up. Indeed Reyes Peak is a sight to behold, and arguably one of the best campsites in the tri counties. But to truly reach "those mountains" the Topa Topa Bluffs, you have to do your homework. You cannot simply drive up the "33" and get there like you can with Reyes Peak. Access is available by permit only, through the Ojai Ranger station. The road to the bluffs is OHV access only; therefore a locked gate bars access from the general public. The ranger district only allows 15 vehicles up per day. Unbelievably, after roaming these mountains for decades, I had never been to the Bluffs. But a year ago, I did some research and found the way to get to the Bluffs. Once I had my permit, and access code, I headed into the forest. Arriving at the gate, I felt like a kid with a backstage pass to Disneyland. As I unlocked the gate, headed thru and locked from behind, I felt the puzzled stares from other less fortunate campers. They didn't have access! Huahhhh...Hauuhhhh! Only I did, I alone had domain over this sacred land! Sorry, back to reality. I engaged four wheel drive, and proceeded to tear up the road. There are miles and miles of off road travel to be enjoyed, steep ascents, and uneven road abound. Off the main road it splits to the left or right. To the right the road leads to a old fire watchtower. Convivebly you could camp here, but there is one site with a fire ring and bench a few miles before you get to the tower. Taking the road to the left your journey hugs the mountain edge then dips into the valley for unspoiled views of Pierda Blancas, and Rose Valley Lake. Once on the mountain edge the road ends at a trail head that will take you directly to the Topa Topa Bluffs. A mile before the road ends there is the one singular campsite. From the site, you have clear views of the Oxnard Plain, the Ojai Valley, and the Bluffs themselves, so close you can make out the diagonal ruts visible form the city. On May 23rd 2008 I visited the Bluffs for the second time. The weather did not cooperate and while we did stay the night, the temperature stayed at an icy 36f degree. Visibility was only 15-20 feet, so we did not get the views I have loved. I cannot wait to return. The solitude of the place inspires meditation, with only 2 campsites off the entire road, you can be assured privacy and silence. Just you and the bluffs.

A short, beautiful hike to the waterfall, very FernGully feeling. So many birds here including Western Bluebirds, Scrub Jays, Turkey Vultures, and various raptors. The air is crisp and cool, bring a warm layer for sure. And, as always, pack it in pack it out, and leave it better than you found it.
