We flagged someone for a desert. Our waitress then returned to take the order. Simple- chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. Cake came with popcorn , weird, and no ice cream. Again, can't find the waitress. Took so long for someone to get the ice cream that we decided to leave without dessert. We get the bill and lo and behold the desert was on it. Will not return. The summer menu is especially good and has some incredible flavor combinations (e.g., the watermelon and crab meat dish is to die for!). Okan is both a great place for a date night and a great place to feed your inner foodie soul. The thing I enjoy the most in trying new ethnic food is not only trying new foods but also also trying foods put together in a way you've never experienced. The drink menu is imaginative and worth being adventurous. Paul, our bartender, was delightful and an expert mixologist and guide. We tried several special drinks on the menu. We tried the roasted okra for an appetizer, sitting on top a spicy tomato sauce. For dinner, my boyfriend had curried oxtail and I had the pastelon. It was hard to imagine how delicious this would be reading the ingredients -- sweet plantains, ground beef, tomato sauce. But take the keep of faith, it's worth it!! read more

Since we have eaten our way through most of Savannah, we decided to try our restaurants in Bluffton and Okan was the first one we are trying in our food-ventures. I am definitely impressed and loved just about everything we had for dinner. Started off with the coco bread, little puff balls of bread that are crispy on the outside and melts in your mouth on the inside. I had the seafood stew - sorry can't remember the menu name but it included mussels, clams, shrimp in a stew that was rich and delicious that also had potatoes. We took the left over home to eat with rice. Sooo yummy! Husband had the lamb shank, not sure if it was supposed to be cold but it got cold rather quickly but overall, the flavor and tenderness was on point. The Carolina gold rice was cooked well and went really well with the lamb. Hibiscus tea was nice and refreshing. Ended with the Pistachio Sponge for dessert. Reminded me of of Christmas cake except with pistachios- really good. Will definitely come back. read more

Loved dining at Okan! We're from the Sacramento area and love unique flavors! The restaurant had a modern upscale, fun vibe. We loved a side of Caribbean Callaloo (my husband loves collared greens and this was a fun take on that!) The sweet potato bread was warm, moist and perfect. We both voted our fave main was the Djon Djon noodles. If you're a fan of mushrooms- a must try! The pork shank was delicious. Our server Roderick was amazing and incredibly attentive. We have tried many items and some of our favorites are crab and watermelon salad, lobster curry, Djon djon noodles, hummus, carrots in dirt, fish, and ice cream. Just had brunch there today. It was delicious! Some very different dishes and we tried a little bit of everything. The only thing I wouldn't get again was the cinnamon roll with citrus icing. It was pretty dry, I had them heat it up and it helped a little it just wasn't the quality of the rest of the food. We'll be back for sure! read more

We had the curried oxtail and peri peri chicken. Oxtails fell off the bone. The chicken was moist and full of flavor. The service was excellent. When our group of six friends decided to celebrate a birthday at Okan, we had no idea we were about to embark on a culinary safari through the flavors of Africa. Trust me, this was no ordinary night out--it was an adventure with delicious twists and turns at every course! We kicked off our feast with a few bottles of a South African wine, the Badenhorst red blend, which had us feeling fancy and sophisticated from the first sip. Then came the bread--oh, the bread! If carbs could talk, these would sing. We had coco bread, hearth bread with jam, and my personal favorite, the sweet potato bread with blueberry compote. If you haven't had bread that makes you consider proposing to it, you're missing out. Appetizers? We had them all. The hearth okra was like a crispy little miracle, and the crispy shrooms were so good they almost had us fighting over the last piece. The blue crab was so fresh we were half-expecting it to wave at us from the plate. Then came the main event--entrees to share. The curried oxtail was my favorite, tender enough to make you forget every tough piece of meat you've ever encountered. The cashew curry was equally delightful, and the fresh fish of the day came out whole, looking so majestic that half our table paused to admire it before diving in. Big shoutout to Rodrick, our server, who guided us through this delicious journey with charm and efficiency. The chef worked his culinary magic, and the manager ensured everything was smooth sailing. A+ to the entire team! If you're looking for a dining experience that's out of the ordinary and packed with flavor, Okan is your spot. I went to okan because of the great pictures on tik tok the bacalao fritters the bread was good with the jam it comes out very hot but the food lacked flavor at our table we had jerk oxtail which wasnt even spicy at all and had a sauce that tasted like bbq sauce . .I had great waitress she was amazing her name was kiesane . I had the catch of the day it wasn't so appealing. Okàn is the new kid on the block but it's an official powerhouse in the Lowcountry! Our lunch was spectacular with a great kale salad dressed with citrus and ginger. The BLT was full of pork belly topped with a perfect runny egg. The jerk chicken with Carolina gold rice and grilled pineapple is excellent. The spice blends are unique while using the best local ingredients. The chef has given small town Bluffton, Big bold flavors from the Caribbean, Africa and beyond. No local restaurants can provide a unique dining experience that Okàn offers. Look at the menu and you know what I mean. The restaurant itself has the most comfortable seating and diners are not stacked on top of each other. The bar area is well designed, again for comfort. My wife and I consider ourselves to be foodies and we spit time between Manhattan and Hilton Head Island. We know food! Finding really amazing food has been challenging down here in South Carolina, but not any longer. We found Okan....a purveyor on inventive food! From the moment we entered their beautifully designed space, we were greeted by Ben Carson who is one of the owners. We were wisked to a fabulous table. If you want Southern Comfort food, don't come to Okan. If you want to be blown away by inventive and flavorful cooking, this is the place for you. Our server was Keyshauna who could not have done a better job explaining the menu to us. Some of the African and Jamaican ingredients were new to us. My wife and I liked so many things on the menu, that the two of us ordered for four people....and we didn't regret it. Everything was delicious....but you must try their fried mushrooms, kale salad, beet hummus and we tried both the amber jack fish as well as the Red Snapper Escovich. It's a lot of food, but we were glad to take home what was left over.....which is something that we never do. During the meal, Chef Bernard Bennett (and co-owner) came to our table to check on us. Chef Bernard has already received a James Beard nomination, and we now know why. Don't count on having any room for desert, although we saw some of these deserts at neighboring tables, and they looked pretty amazing. The other thing that we did not have, but all of our neighbors ordered was one of three bread choices.....which we will try next time...and there will be a next time and it will be soon. Lastly, Okan is fairly priced. We walked out feeling like we received good value, unlike so many other restaurants that use "sense of humor" pricing. My family and I visited Okan for the first time on New Years Day. The food is absolutely amazing! My husband and I had the special which was the brunch burger. It was seasoned well with African spices, a fried egg on top and crispy yuca fries. My son had the OG Biscuit Sando ... YUM! We also got the Jackson's Bara and Oyster Mushrooms for the table. My goodness, so tasty! It's been a long time since I ate anything out that made my heart sing. There were a few things that had me rate service and atmosphere a 4 instead of 5. Our server forgot to ask if we wanted anything to drink. No biggie, we were fine with water and I think she was so excited to share the details of the delicious specials that she forgot. One of our items was served on a chipped plate. When our brunch burgers arrived each plate only had half a burger. I thought how strange a presentation. We realized when the check came that the server put one entree to be split for two. When I ordered and said "we'll both have the brunch burger" she assumed we were sharing. The serving size of even half a burger was more than enough and I'm glad to know that's not how it's normally served. The young man who brought our food sliced my sunny side egg and dripped it over my burger while saying "they told me to do it this way". He was awkward at this and I would have preferred he asked and not touch my egg. The space is beautiful and well appointed so seeing the dirty glasses on the bar we assumed from the night before and the wine glass with blue masking tape, used to measure pours, wasn't the best look. Lastly, the music didn't match the vibe, in my opinion. It seems to be upscale casual but the 90s dance hits took away from that. I realize the critique may seem more than the praise but I assure you, I LOVED THE FOOD! The food and great attitude of the staff. It's the small details of the experience that needed some TLC. I'm looking forward to trying dinner and making this one of our favorite spots. read more
