Out of all the restaurants we visited in Savannah, this was hands down the best. We were still talking about the food days later. While we found almost everything delicious, I felt the Pasta Jambalaya was just okay, not bad, but it didn't quite reach the high standard of the other dishes. We stopped here for a quick bite and beignets. Our meals were the Shrimp Poboy, Barbecue Shrimp, Catfish Fingers, Crab Cake Sandwich, and Parmesan Garlic Grits. The results were mixed. The Barbecue Shrimp came in a spicy sauce loaded with flavor. It came with a piece of bread that was perfect for dipping into the sauce to sop it up. There were a good number of shrimp in the serving. The Crab Cake Sandwich was good. It was not as full of lump crab meat as other crab cakes that we've had elsewhere. The Catfish Fingers were large pieces of catfish that were lightly fried. The Shrimp Poboy was satisfying. The Parmesan Garlic Grits were disappointing. There was no hint of garlic or parmesan flavor. Our server tried to rectify the situation by adding cheddar cheese to it. Fortunately, the Beignets were as good as we expected. Huey's is the only place outside of New Orleans where we have found authentic New Orleans beignets. Our server Jenelle was very friendly. At some point, something frazzled her because she seemed flustered and rattled by the time we were ready to leave. We had asked her for silverware for our beignets. It took her so long that my partner got up to get some from another table themselves because we were tired of waiting. When I asked for the check, she gave me the wrong check. She went in the back to fix it and had my debit card. She came back without the card to ask me for my zip code to finish the transaction. The scenery, the service, and the food were AMAZING. Our waitress was a sweetheart and very attentive. My gf had the Fried catfish and she said it was good. I had a crabcake Benedict. The seafood was fresh and the potatoes that came with it were seasoned very differently than I've ever had. They were so gooddd! We both enjoyed our drinks and noted they had liquor in them and not too sweet. Great for us. The only reason they did not get a 5 star review is because lowkey all of the POC were put in the same section in the back of the restaurant, that felt intentional and off putting. Out-of-towners who came through with 1 person who's never had southern food before. Our group decided on Huey's for our nice dinner out. The hostesses seemed more interested in their phones and chatting with each other which made us nervous. The river view was great on even a hot summer evening. Our waiter was phenomenally kind, respectful, and it really made our evening better. I didn't even get upset when they brought me the wrong dish. I've had NoLA food before and this was pretty good. I ordered the crawfish etouffé and it came pretty close. I will say, the shrimp and grits that mistakenly came out looked more oily and like soup than grits. We came here last year and to my surprise, I didn't review it! In fact, last year we came here several times, once for food, and once just for beignets for dessert! The beignets come out piping hot and with the powdered sugar goodness. Oh, and the pecan sauce goes really well with it also! This time I ordered the fried shrimp and oysters and they were cooked perfectly. I got the cheesy grits also and I'm sorry to say that it was disappointing. Other reviewers enjoyed their grits so perhaps it was just an off day or a bad batch (or maybe a different cook). I just took a few bites of it and left the majority of it. read more

Brought my son here for a little brunch, we got seated right away by the window seat which was super nice to be able to look out onto the river. My son fell in love with Beignets that day. I had the shrimp and grits, which weren't super amazing but the flavor was good and I really enjoyed the Parmesan they put in it. It needed some salt or something, the flavoring of the gravy the shrimp was served with just didn't really stand out in the dish. Good Creole/Cajun food on the riverwalk in Savannah! It is not fancy and it is moderately priced, all of which is a plus. Service is so-so, and food quality ranges! Corn bread which is complimentary is hard to eat. Simply put it falls apart and you find yourself scooping it with spoon! Grilled chicken sandwich is drowned in mayo in a bread that is stale. Gumbo is really good. The only downside is that they put little gumbo in a bowl and a lot of rice. Muffuletta sandwich was just awesome and we loved it!!! The vibe and views were beautiful, and the service was good overall, except for the maître d' who took a minute to come back?? maybe she was on a break. I mainly came in because I saw a couple outside enjoying a beignet, and since I was in Louisiana just a month ago, I was definitely craving them. Huey's didn't have a large selection of food, but they do have something for everyone, I personally tried the shrimp étouffée and thought it was pretty good. The seasoning was just right and not underwhelming or overpowering. They also bring out cornbread before the meal that is moist and melts in your mouth. The service was good. I was in town for several days with my parents as a pre-holiday vacation and my parents who have visited Savannah previously said we had to stop by Huey's to get the Beignets! I'm all for fried dough and powdered sugar! :) Huey's is right on the river and the front of the store is just windows so you can see the big ships when they come by. It was a bit stuffy in there and noticed the fans were not on. Our server was very nice and attentive and was able to get them on and cool us off quickly. We went around lunch time but me and dad were still kinda full from breakfast. And frankly, I was there for one thing...the beignets! We ordered a dozen because even though they are best hot and fresh we wanted some leftovers. They were amazing! My dad got the caramel praline cheesecake and it was not a small slice! Mom was hungry and got the fried oyster po'boy which she really enjoyed and I just got a plate of hot fries to share. Even though we didn't have a huge lunch our server was great and really made our visit special. If I ever get back to Savannah I'll be back to Huey's and you should check them out! read more

Fortunately, we were on the list for a 30 minute wait for a table. So we went to the bar for a cocktail while we waited. Two seats next to the front window at the end of the bar were open. Our server/mixologist, Avery, gave us drink and food menus, so we decided to eat at the bar. Everything began falling into place and continued throughout our wonderful visit. Avery was incredible! Working a packed bar, drinks for tables and yet we felt that we were the only people being served by her. Started with fantastic and perfectly made cocktails; Manhattan and Amaretto Sour. We shared a bowl of Cajun Gumbo and a bowl of Crawfish Etoufee. Both perfectly spiced. The gumbo had just the right amount of kick for me. The taste reminded us so much of New Orleans that I thought to myself that an Abita beer would go great with the food. Not having encountered Abita outside of New Orleans, I asked if they had an Abita-like beer. Avery said that they actually had Abita! Everything continued to just get better. Eating at the bar was the perfect place for us. When I walked through the main dining room (on my way to the restroom), I found it to be a little too noisy for our taste. At the bar we had a couple of very nice chats with some folks next to us. On to dessert. Had to go with the beignets with praline sauce. Cafe Dumonde eat your hear out! Golden brown, warm and steamy, drenched in powdered sugar... unbelievable praline sauce. A couple of cups of excellent coffee and we were set. Finished off with a few sips of Gator Bite, an orange flavored rum liquor reminiscent of Rum Jumbie. Go here! Sit at the bar during Avery's shift. You will not be disappointed! In town for a girls trip and we wanted to eat near the river, this place came up on our search. Cool atmosphere with the open windows and live music upstairs. We ordered Jazzy Wings, the Herb Grilled Salmon, the Fried Green Tomato Muffuletta, the Grilled Chicken Sandwich, and the beignets. The beignets came out first and they were amazing! Beautiful view of riverwalk & river from the dining room side. We were lucky to walk in with party of 6 and get a table quickly. Its a nice bright space. They also have an indoor bar with tables for dining thats more casual, to the right when you enter. We were brought into main enclosed dining room to the left. It was a pretty warm evening, so we were happy they had the glass doors closed to full enjoy our meal in AC. The gentleman who was our server is a Savannah native. Authentic southern hospitality, with great menu reccomendations. We started with fried green tomatoes and their french pastries, World Famous Beignets. Best way i can describe..like a french version of Italian zeppole, but its flat, much more light, airy crispy on outside and moist inside doused in powdered sugar. Both apps were absolutely delicious! Most of us had the shrimp & grits which is a Savannah flavor must have in my opinion. And every restaurant has a different take on it. But I haven't had a bad one yet, anywhere. I went with the catfish. It was a little disappointing in terms of flavor, but was clearly fresh and breaded/fried perfectly! Huey's on the River is a long termed restaurant in Savannah. I have been coming to Savannah for more than 30 years for both business & pleasure and make time to visit Huey's while here. Today's visit is with friends from Atlanta and as always the food was very good. I had the seafood omelette which was cooked perfectly (no burnt egg) and loaded with seafood (shrimp shredded crab & scallops). My wife had Eggs Sardou (poached eggs) with the potatoes casserole (potatoes, cheese & spices). Our friends had the Eggs Blackstone & Eggs Benedict, both of which looked good and from what our friends said was excellent! But, before you start the meal you must have beignets. Huey's version is very good with the dough cooked spot on and of course more powdered sugar than you need but still consume. Finally, the restaurant has very good service and the decor is comfortable. If visiting the Savannah area put this on your list. You may also catch Hollywood in town as we did as they were prepping River St. for a shoot of a future episode of Tulsa Kings! read more

Visiting Huey's when in Savannah seems to be a tradition at this point. I decided that I was going to have the gumbo and now I realize that that's the only way to start my day when in Savannah. Walked about fifteen minutes just to try a place that is known for New Orleans style food. The restaurant sits at the river with a view that is super peaceful. Upon arrival I was greeted by a host who did notify me that the restaurant accepts Apple Pay. I was glad since I typically pay that way. I sat down and ordered a mimosa and coke with no ice. The drinks were brought expeditiously. As I sat , drank and fellowshiped on FaceTime I notice that the plants above me were real. That gave the place a fresh , crisp atmosphere ( at 8:30a). Shortly afterwards I was brought a cup of gumbo. I will say for restaurant quality it was good.. add a little hot sauce and it's better. Shortly after scarfing down the gumbo my catfish , grits, potatoes and fried hard egg arrived. The catfish was hard and crispy like I like. The grits were perfect. Potatoes stole the show and the toast was a nice compliment. The only thing was the eggs were not fried hard they were runny which made the eggs inedible to me. Other than that my visit was amazing. I had the Cajun jambalaya pasta here and it disappointed me. I expected a flavorful Cajun marinara pasta sauce but it was only tomato and bland. There was nothing special about the Chiron or shrimp and the sausage could have been better quality. The only upside to this visit were the beignets which were spot on!. As a person, who hasn't had the real beignets in New Orleans nor at Disneyland ... lol these were good as a first time! I would go back here just for those, not so much for the food. read more
