What a great dining experience! Carlos welcomed us and we instantly knew we'd come to the right place. It was recommended by a sales person at our timeshare. She was 100% accurate in her assessment of this friendly place. I should talk about the food... we never got to have a meal! It's crazy but we couldn't stop eating the queso with chorizo. It was too much for two people. It came with flour or corn tortillas. That turned out to be our meal because we devoured so much of it. I'll tell you that I don't like any of their salsas. They're too thin and runny for my taste. But I think they're authentic. They just aren't the type of salsa I like. And the chips were too thick. But those things weren't important. Drinks...my husband loved the margarita which he chased with a shot of Azul tequila. He was a happy man. I ordered a virgin mango mojito. They put Tajin around the rim. I wiped it off. They also purée their mangoes with that stuff. I love that they try cool stuff but just make me a basic mango mojito and leave the spices out. The churros were the best!!! Perfect texture. Perfect flavor. I didn't have room to finish mine but the part I ate was great! The decor is cool! Murals, pretty wicker lighting, gorgeous tile floor... really a nice place that I wouldn't have expected in a strip mall. So glad to have found this spot. We have been looking for a unique spot for tacos and Mexican Fare. This place did not disappoint. The flavors and style is based from Central Mexico. I had the Gobernador (shrimp) and the de la plaza tacos (steak). The shrimp and steak were flavorful and tender. Service was excellent, our server took the time to really talk about the history of the restaurant and how the inspiration for the menu. We've visited Okay Maguey several times now since we live just down the street, and it's become one of our regular spots. One thing that always stands out is the owner usually working behind the bar and greeting guests as they walk in. He does a great job making the place feel welcoming and recognizing returning customers, which adds a lot to the experience. The food is excellent and a little different from the typical Sonoran-style Mexican restaurants in the area. The menu leans more central Mexico/Mexico City style, which keeps things interesting and gives them a unique identity. There's a great variety of tacos, and Taco Tuesday is definitely worth checking out for the deals alone. Our usual go-to appetizers are the flautas or guac, and for entrées we love the enchiladas mole or enchiladas suizas. Honestly, you can't really go wrong with the tacos either. Stopped by for lunch while I was in the area on a weekend and was really impressed. The service was fun and friendly throughout the time were were there. We started with the queso and it was really tasty. Of course we also asked for the chorizo with the queso. I also loved that they made sure to ask to let them know if we needed any extra tortillas. There was so much queso. I was a little worried about the reviews regarding the portion sizes but after eating the queso I just had enough space for pescadillas that I ordered. I enjoyed the pescadillas, and really liked the salsa that came with it. The pescadillas were nice and crispy and pretty tasty, but my favorite was still the queso. Wow!! What a disappointing food experience. Let me star with the good. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The michelada was very good and overall the dining and kitchen area looked very clean. The steak was good but not worth the price . The guacamole was reasonably priced for what the amount you get but no flavor. The beans tasted old and metallic The rice tasted like they wanted to make it flavorful but failed. The carnitas were not good at all. They had a very weird taste to them. The enchiladas suizas were missing something, there was really no flavor to the sauce and the chicken had a chipotle flavor that didn't complement the tomatillo taste. We didn't like that the chef was grabbing everything with his bare hands and wasn't wearing gloves. Sadly this place wasn't for us . This was the second location we've been to of the chain and I would say it is the better one. Luckily, it is also down the street from us. My husband and I wanted a casual dinner with the kids as we had gone out the night before to celebrate our anniversary. I was really craving tacos. Our neighbors had recommended this location so w we gave it a try. The menu is pretty to the point but I'm not great with Spanish. I don't want to butcher the names so I'll just use my descriptions of the tacos I ordered: al pastor, shrimp and pork chop with bacon. Yes, there is a pork chop taco. My husband got what I believe was the enchiladas verde. We both enjoyed our meals. I just wish there was a hot salsa that had a little more heat or an option to order chips and salsa. To start this is a really clean vibrant spot. We really liked the feel walking in. The drinks came out first and the mezcal pineapple was amazing. Really had great flavor and spice. Next the esquite came out and it was good but needed some Valentina or similar salsa Lastly the mains. I got the enchiladas which were good. Not the best version I've had but would get again. My wife got the tacos and quesadilla. The tacos were both amazing. Sadly the tinga quesadilla was bland and dry. Tinga is my favorite but was disappointed with this recipe. The tortillas are all made fresh, in house, and honestly that's a total game changer for the taco quality. Every meat we tried was cooked perfectly, balanced with just the right mix of ingredients to make each bite not only savory but fresh, with a flavor punch we haven't found anywhere else. My only qualm is that it's kinda overpriced for the portions (even for $1 off all tacos on Sunday Funday). The tacos were delicious, I just wish they were bigger. This is the cutest taco bar. The decor is absolutely lovely. Often, the food doesn't match the decor but wow- not in this case.
