My son has been coming to Okinawan Karate Dojo for almost a full year. Sensei Stan and the rest of his team do a really wonderful job teaching the kids! This school is very family oriented and maintains an educational yet fun environment. The pricing here is very fair for the classes as well as their branded merchandise. The class schedule is also very easy to follow. The daily class schedule for each level of students is different for every day of the week. However, this schedule is the same every week. Once you input the dates into your calendar you can put them on repeat and you'll never miss a beat. The belt testing here is also done well in my opinion. The testing dates are announced well in advance and I've also seen them posted throughout the Dojo. As long as the students attend, participate and learn the different blocks, punches, etc then they should pass their tests each time. My son has moved up to the next belt each time he has a belt test. The new location is really cool too! They now have two floors which allows them to accommodate more classes as well. I really am glad that my son attends Okinawan Karate Dojo! I'm lookong forward to him earning his black belt here one day. read more

A young family member attended the summer camp program. This was his 3rd year. He looks forward to attending every year. Although the kids were not able to get to the pool this year, the camp was able to make up for the temporary change. The price was reasonable and manageable. The program included valuable karate lessons taught by certified instructors. This has always been a great service. The diversity of the program has always been reflective of the county. Overall, the Okinawa Dojo summer camp program met and exceeded expectations by providing my little family member with a fun, healthy and safe environment. read more

This is a top notch dojo for kids or adults. At the top is Sensei Stan Crump who has learned from the source in Japan over a period of decades. He has a great teaching style and is proof that Karate is something that can keep you fit without injuries for decades. Jiu jitsu and wrestling are great for defense and toughness but they are brutal on the joints. There is a mental aspect to Okinawa Karate that is very beneficial for longevity. I am a 14-year-old, but I've been attending OKD for almost 10 years now, and it has helped me so much, mentally and socially, because when I'm there I enjoy my time, and I also enjoy the good vibes all the Sensis bring! Sometimes a class may seem a little slow, but it's ok because it's like a family that will never give up on you! I have a lot to say (all positive) but I will keep this concise. I was introduced to the Dojo at a fall festival event. 6 months after that I decided to take them up on the offer for a free two week trial. After that, I enrolled my 5 year old son who has now been going for 3 weeks. It's been fantastic. It's professionally run and all of the Senseis(sp?) are wonderful with the children. They are firm and demanding of the children but it's all out of respect and desire for them to do well. They also have a good balance of humor and good old fashioned fun for the younger ones. On top of all of that, they are very engaging with the parents. They go out of their way to be respectful to the parents. You will frequently find them shaking hands and talking with them. If they still offer free two week trials, give it a shot. I bet you would be as impressed as I have been so far. read more

I haven't participated in a class, but I had a great experience with them. My husband needed a pair of white pants for an event, and when we couldn't find any in stores, I thought of a karate uniform. I called at 730pm the night before, but they waited for me to get there. The studio looked clean and orderly and they were very friendly. I really appreciated everything and I'll definitely be looking here first if one of our kids wants to do karate. read more

Located in a very nice part of the city near historic Ellicott city,MD. It is an extraordinary dojo with an amazing array of instructors. Sensei Stanley is very patient, precise, and detail-oriented in explaining all of the techniques. He is big and strong, yet fluid and graceful in all of his movements. His classes pack a plethora of techniques in a short period of time. He incorporates fun exercises in our training to allow us to think outside the box. John Street' classes, like Sensei's, are also very structured and blend power and precision in all of the techniques. The dojo community includes a rich blend of people of all ages and ethnicities. Everyone here is very kind and passionate and the senior students are all very approachable and willing to explain the techniques to the junior students. I think that fosters the best kind of learning environment when both teachers and senior students help the junior students grow. If you are thinking about studying Uechi-Ryu Karate, you can sit and watch classes to see if it looks like something that resonates with you. However, once you begin, you must understand that your training will take time and patience on your part. Everyone progresses at different speeds and understand that you are placing your trust in people who've experienced what you are about to experience in your training. This is not like many forms of karate where you train to achieve a black belt in a short period of time. Uechi-Ryu Karate takes a long time to get to an advanced level and even when you get there, you realize there is much more to learn. read more

If we could give the dojo and staff six stars, we would. Our son started at the dojo in August and quickly developed a passion for karate. This is after visiting another dojo, walking out and saying "I'm not doing that." Sensei Stan has an incredible way of connecting with the kids. All of the staff and instructors work really well with the students. The instructors provide a nice balance of teaching skills while incorporating humor to keep the kids engaged and instilling focus, discipline and life skills necessary for success as they grow.
