This place is truly incredible. The food, the atmosphere and the service make it my favorite date night restaurant in Fairfield! The owner and chef Brian Lewis is also the nicest guy. He goes around to every table to check in and see how you are doing regardless if he knows you! Other restaurants in the area of this level you can feel the difference sometimes of how the treat people they know vs ordinary people like me! Brian Lewis never makes you feel like you aren't an important guest to him. I am currently pregnant and can't eat sushi but last night at dinner they made accommodations to some of my favorites as well as the best mocktail. First time at oko 7pm on Sunday date night. Benchmark for us is Kawa ni which we already love and justifies the 10miles to Westport. Is this either a better or complementary mousetrap?? Decor was austere and a/c too cold. And overall I was expecting this place to have more buzz but felt more like a straightforward neighborhood sushi spot. Parking a little inconvenient if you're like me and don't enjoy valets Onto the food Crispy tuna - good but $7 per piece unacceptably ripoffish Ramen egg is their Japanese version of a deviled egg. Ahight Hamachi sashimi - this was the low point. Fish cut well. Issue was sauce had no acid or brightness. Straight up soy. Blah. Wtf Hand rolls chef sampler best thing so far. Scallops the best. Ribs good quality meat and nice flavor except not sweet enough, just soy with no sticky tartness Karage bao very disappointing. Chicken was crazy fatty and just grody I'm already happily married to kawa ni, white picket fence and the whole nine. I won't be doing this again but wish the place the best. 2nd visit to OKO. Our first experience was so incredible I could not wait. As always, when the bar is set very high, one is exposed to disappointment. To start with, our table was not ready. We asked 3 times at different points in the evening, if we could stay at the bar instead. We were told 3 times it was not possible because of other reservations. And of course, the guests never showed up, increasing our frustration of being moved to a noisy table. It is my fault for not having asked during my reservation, but the hostess could have done better, maybe by simply putting our cocktails while waiting on the house? 2nd mistake when I ordered the Wagyu: I was not asked how I wanted it cooked and ended up having a medium rare which is a crime in my personal view. OKO does such an amazing job at preparing this dish that missing the customer's request is annoying. I would pass these mistakes at any low key restaurant in the area, but OKO is positioned above all those; so are my expectations when dining there. If you passed the venting part of this review, it's time to see the positive: The cocktails are amazing, the crab fried rice comes with large pieces of fresh crab and the OMA sushi are over the top. Picture a 3D experience when tasting them: The look, then the consistence and finally the explosion of tastes in the mouth. Needless to say, we did not realize that omakase reservations had to made in advance and not via Opentable (oops)! Regardless, this was probably the best Japanese-inspired meal I have had in CT in the 5.5 years that I have lived here. Long gone are the days where I thought we had to travel to Manhattan for the quality and ingenuity that we experienced here (and also cramped tables but it's a popular joint so I get it). I was really hoping to try some chawanmushi and suckling pig bao, which I haven't had since my honeymoon in Maldives many moons ago but it will just force me to keep coming back (as the wallet allows)! Everything was excellent - the service, the recommendations, the food, the interesting people watching ..... I do think the duck and foie gras dumpling was a bit on the dry side (maybe it is supposed to be so then shame on me for bringing it up) and that hamachi collar we split was also not as succulent as I had expected but all the other flavor combos made it up for it threefold (at least)! The tunas we sampled were better than in NYC that's for certain and those crispy wagyu bites - there are no words (ok, there are: like crack) i wanted an entire dozen but that is just gluttonous .... I came here for dinner and it was a great experience! Everything was very tasty and beautiful. The seating they have is perfect- outdoor seating is tented so it's nice there even if it's sunny or rainy and right on the river. Would you believe I didn't use additional soy sauce or wasabi for my order of the chef's choice 5 piece sushi? It was that good and each piece already had subtle flavors of soy, a touch of heat and some were topped with a bit of green onions. The fish was buttery exceptional and plated like jewels across a slender horizontal plate. Each piece was sized in a more traditional single bite and not supersized, which does leave you wanting more, but isn't this more like portion control and will make you chew slower to savor each bite longer? Plus at $25 for 5 pieces, you better stretch the time, so slow down and enjoy. Anyway the best yellowtail sushi I've had in recent memory. Our server recommended a cold sake that wasn't sweet or dry - with notes of passion fruit. It was just right and paired well with the sushi and was like a palate cleanser to prepare for the next delectable bite. Also ordered the chef's choice tempura, the purple yams in there were really good! Served with a thicker consistency tempura dipping sauce which was more flavorful and saltier than what we're used to at other local places, along with what seemed to be a mayo based cream to dip the veggies, hmmmm was good too but don't overdo it or the veggie tempura won't be the light meal you intended. If you want a bowl of rice, order it separately, it isn't included. Ok am going backwards here, but the sushi had to be the centerpiece! We did start with the roasted shishitos, which was served in a fairly generous amount sitting in a miso paste, so mix it up before you eat. Our server cautioned that one in ten of these little peppers have heat - and there's definitely more than 10 - so I did notice a bit of tingling in my mouth after polishing off this appetizer. For dessert we had soft serve swirl vanilla chocolate sundae - what you'd get at Stew's or Carvel - but we added a topping of OKO crunch which is their own dark chocolate and nuts (I think) concoction that completely elevated this simple dessert beyond our expectations. What's better than enjoying a childhood fav with a new scrumptious delight? It ain't sprinkles, kids! On the menu if you're looking at the hot dishes, take note that the top half of this section are really appetizer portions while those on the bottom half are entree sized. So if you get a medium ramekin sized chawanmushi (I think that's how it's spelled) and assume that it'll be in a meal sized soup bowl like you would be getting at San Fran's J-town (BTW, for the same price), back it up, this is an appetizer at OKO. So just remember to ask your server prior to ordering. The space was previously occupied by a cool cafe, but it wasn't sustainable given Westport's high rents and cost of doing business - how many cups of coffee, tea and finger samiches can you sell to pay the rent and staff when customers come in with their laptops and buy only a cup using their free WiFi for 2 hours? Am glad OKO has taken over with their appropriately priced menu and have been at this nicely reconfigured space that is open airy yet cozily illuminated. You do see clear across the bar into the open kitchen but it wasn't a noisy dining space. read more

We went there on a Thursday night with our local friends (they are in their 70s) and lived in Westport for over 30 years and we are from nyc. Overall the experience was great, food variety, drinks etc. our server was on top of it. However we had an awful experience half way through the meal which left us wondering for days how the business is run. Our busboy was super nice and we had a very pleasant chat. My 70 year old friend thought he was Japanese so she was saying something in Japanese. But they busboy told her that he isn't Japanese, and knowing her bubbly and curious personality she asked where he is from. He responded and told us where he is from (I won't mention it due to his privacy). We had a nice chat. After 10-15 mins, a manager came and told us that we made the busboy felt uncomfortable and he felt that we were racially profiling him. First of all, we are all immigrants therefore we are curious to know people's background and always embrace it. I am puzzled by how the busboy chatted with us nicely, complaint to manager and the manager came and told us. It made us very uncomfortable as it was not our intent. I will give it a benefit of the doubt that this is a sensitive time. But to the business owner, there needs to a proper training to your employees. Absolutely one of the best restaurants in all of Connecticut let alone Westport. Delicious nigiri and hand rolls. The crispy sushi is so good too -- awesome selection of toppings (tuna, wagyu beef, and salmon) so good like New York City quality locally. The edamame is so yummy too - the sauce they use is addictive. I order it every time I dine because it's the perfect introduction to every single meal I have there (and miso soup) besides the food, the cocktails are crafted simply but delicious and refreshing. I love getting a new one every time then ending my meal with (chilled) sake because they have the best selection in the entire area. Such good flavors, service, and ambiance! We especially enjoyed the chef's choice sushi, the ahi tuna poke bowl (incredible blend of flavors) and the waffle cone sundae (homemade soft serve and butterscotch sauce with candied almonds). BAD BAD BAD!!!! Came to this place for a special occasion, after hearing/reading about this and other restaurant. We ordered some sushi, appetizer and etc. I'll get down to the reasons why I gave only one star, although I think they dont even deserve that. 1. +30 minute Wait time (despite of making a reservation, because the host's friends were sitting at the table, the host later came looking like he's saved a day to inform us that he told them to leave. ) 2. Plates were not set up ahead- had to wait and ask for plates and utensils. 3. UNDERCOOKED tempura!!!! Fried batter was not cooked thorough - ewwwww tempuras came out with white doughy stuff all over. I mean, How can that plate passed the cook/chef looking like that? Oh how I wish I had taken photos of them!!!! 4. okay, sushi and wasabi they go together, no? NO wasabi came out with sushi!!!! (this is japanese food restaurant, right?) I was already done by then but it was NOT over. 5. I see the receipt and noticed that they gracefully took out a charge for undercooked tempura. And we were informed about this grace by our waitress. But when it was time to pay and sign, I see the numbers didn't look right. My CC and check came back with more charge!! What??? I asked,The waitress and the staff and whoever in the back rounded up, later came back with the check minus the tempura explaining that some 'mix up and misunderstanding among the staff' was there. UGH!!!!! From the beginning till the end, I was sooooo turned off!!! How can they operate a restaurant like that???? I wish we had picked another place for this occasion. If I could give NO STARS, I would. A snowy night with more staff than patrons, they should have had no problem making my wife and I happy to be there. We called ahead, first before we left home and ten minutes away. Both times, the hostess told us that everything was find and just get there safely. When we arrived, the hostess told my wife that there is no sushi bar. This was the first disconnect. The waitress came over for our dinner order as she handed us menus. She reminded us that the kitchen would be open for ten more minutes. (In retrospect, we should have left then.) My wife and I attempted to rush our orders in an effort to accommodate these new requirements. While we ordered what we could find, if the waitress would have been a little engaging, made a few recommendations, even suggested a few things, we would have ordered twice as much. Instead, we ordered a soup, a salad, some sushi and that is it. We were barely done with salad when we were advised that the kitchen was already closed, and we could order no more. In summary, it is disappointing. My wife and I expected an experience at a new place. Instead, the staff onsite wanted collectively to go home. While I can't blame them as the snowstorm was a challenge to drive through, they accepted our reservation and our money. The amount that our meal cost would have rewarded us with a memorable experience two miles down the street. If they are willing to seat us, we should get the best experience that the restaurant can offer. Instead, we were an inconvenience to the staff and our experience would have been far more rewarding anywhere else. I am disappointed that we wasted our time and effort to go to this new place. They won't survive long if they think that business will grow from location alone. For people looking to eat in Westport, there are better choices. For people looking for excellent sushi in Westport, there are also excellent choices. We didn't love any of the apps/hot dishes with the exception of the fried chicken bao which the 4 of us agreed was the best thing we ate that night. I used to love OKO, but last time I went, my order was messed up - twice - and then I was given bs excuses for it. The hostess and waitress were incredibly rude, and so was the owner! I only had one cocktail, which was nothing special and different from my past experiences, wanted another one but the waitress never came around to take another order. First, so good to find the food is still amazing but what really stood out was the service (isn't it always the case? ;) I made our reservation thru opentable and noted we were celebrating our anniversary. Very disappointing meal at a new place I had high hopes for. The tempura was loaded with too much oil and most of the vegetables tasted more raw instead of lightly cooked. The chicken yakitori skewer was incredibly small for a crazy $10 cost. The skin had a very foul taste to it. The actual meat though, what little there was, had a great flavor from the sauce and was very tender. The salmon hand roll was mostly just rice and seaweed. What little amount of salmon was in there didn't taste very fresh (at $6 for one roll). I feel like we had a bill over $100 for a little piece of chicken, some fried batter/raw veggies and rice with some seaweed! The chef's sampler platter -- I would not recommend this one either. For $45 the pieces were mostly rice with very small pieces of actual fish, and a couple of them did not taste super fresh as they should. Super high pricing/small portions aside - Just about any Japanese place I've been to in the city has been much better. No high chairs/boosters for the little ones but luckily our's surprisingly stayed calm sitting on our laps for almost 2 hours. Place is crazy loud and busy with very slow, but friendly service. Although once we told server our 1 year old was about to erupt, I've never seen someone move so fast to bring over a check in my life! read more

This review is in two parts. The first is a review of the staff and food. The second is a review of the omakase experience. The food and the staff are really superb. We had some excellent fish with some wonderful combinations that were really special. The combinations of texture with flavor were especially noteworthy. There is a great deal of thought and creativity going into every dish. We did the 15 course omakase, and my favorite was the chawanmushi. I also really liked how the lean tuna then fatty were served in order. A nice play on texture and flavor that would be a fun experiment with steak too. The staff, ALL of them, were extremely accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable. We really enjoyed our interactions and their willingness to answer questions. So food and service an 9 out of 10. It really was excellent. Now, as an omakase experience, I can't give it high marks. Part of the joy and fun of omakase is watching the sushi chef's cuts and skill. Hearing him tell you about the fish and just the general theater of the evening. Though you are sitting at a counter, it is near the grill and cooks, the sushi chef is at the other end of the kitchen and his work is not visible. We had a little interaction with the cooks, but definitely less than you would in a more traditional experience. As a way to mitigate any confusion, I would actually call it a tasting menu at the chef's counter. I know the literal translation of omakase, so understand why it is referred as such here, just wish to clarify for those who have experienced omakase at other places. Omakase experience 2 of 10. Overall though, would still rate the evening very highly. We can't wait to return! As mentioned above, the food and service really are quite wonderful. read more

Just had a nice family dinner here this weekend and was reminded of how much I love this location. The staff are fantastic. They're enthusiastic and it's evident that they care about the work they're doing. Beyond this, the food itself is always top notch. I live closer to Stamford but we make the trip up to get the best sushi in Connecticut whenever possible. A family member has a pretty severe gluten intolerance and they were able to accommodate a few menu changes with no issue at all. I'm continually impressed as I learn more about this location and try new dishes on the menu, and find that I enjoy them as much or more than the last I ordered. My favorite restaurant! read more

We just ate here tonight! My fiancé and I cook and eat a LOT of asian food, and heard good things about OKO. We're pretty touch critics of the local options, so were feeling hopeful! The food was outstanding and service was impeccable. There was a mix-up with our reservation, but the manager and bar manager smoothly resolved it. It's one thing to find clean, delicious food outside of the city, but another to have such awesome service. We've sincerely missed the duo of both since we moved out here. We are doing "Dry January", so we both had the "Rejuvenate" drink which was super tasty--spicy. We shared the brussell sprouts, edamame, and scallion pancake. As a former chef and restauranteur I almost feel bad panning this restaurant after the rough time the business has had over the past 6 months. Almost. But they earned this. Horrible disappointment despite modest expectations for take out. Total fail on both service and food. Oko is usually good for dine in, or was pre-Covid. Not so with our take order tonight. From the rude receptionist, I wish I had gotten her name but let's just call her Surly, to the toughest rib I have ever tried to eat to they way the food was slopped into the to go containers with a daring display of carelessness to forgetting to give us half of our order; this was a comedy of errors. Except that it is my wife's birthday and she's not laughing. When we called back Surly said "oh you can come back and get it" because who doesn't love hour old $300 carry out sushi. When we suggested that perhaps they could remake it and deliver it she said that they are too busy, a leitmotif when speaking with Surly as she mentioned it 3 times. Will never return and advise anyone reading this to skip Oko and dine elsewhere. That's what we ended up doing because we still wanted to eat sushi. So we ordered delivery from Pink Sumo. Which by the way is very good and 1/5 the price. Tell them Oko sent you. Update: The saga continues... It is now 23 days later and despite multiple calls to inquire about the refund that they offered to put back on our credit card, they still have not done it. Adding insult to injury, to date no one has ever offered an apology for any of this. In fact, on several occasions they have not even made an attempt to conceal their contempt. The concept of service recovery must be completely foreign to them. read more
