Just had a nice family dinner here this weekend and was reminded of how much I love this location. The staff are fantastic. They're enthusiastic and it's evident that they care about the work they're doing. Beyond this, the food itself is always top notch. I live closer to Stamford but we make the trip up to get the best sushi in Connecticut whenever possible. A family member has a pretty severe gluten intolerance and they were able to accommodate a few menu changes with no issue at all. I'm continually impressed as I learn more about this location and try new dishes on the menu, and find that I enjoy them as much or more than the last I ordered. My favorite restaurant! read more

Wowed is all I can say. This place is defined by simplicity and delicacy. From start to finish, my expectations were absolutely blown away. This was an impromptu after work sushi craving that turned into so much more. I will be here at least twice a month. I am new to the area so if Norwalk/Westport has more like this to offer, I am all ears. A warm welcome when I entered. Amazing bar service from Annie. Great atmosphere and music. Cozy spot. Great guest company too, shout out to Joan and Marcy. Shishitos are a must for me whenever they are on the menu. The duck and foie gras gyoza were great although I wish I could taste a little more foie. Fresh sushi basics for the unadventurous are covered. For the experts, a wide array of TLCed nigiri. If you are coming here to drown your sushi in soy sauce, don't come. This is not the place for you. The chef clearly takes pride, cannot wait to try his other spot. Even the dessert, soft serve ice cream, exceeded my expectations. Originally I thought it was a cop out, but just try it, white chocolate matcha topping... You will not be disappointed. Amazing new modern Japanese restaurant, from chef Brian Lewis of The Cottage fame. The menu features a lot of sushi (and I sense he's planning to move even more in that direction), and does that extremely well - unabashedly American-style sushi, with lots of extra seasonings thrown in (none of that whole 5-ingredient spend-2-years-as-an-apprentice-learning-to-properly-vinegar-rice Jiro business), but to beautiful effect. (and it's not like there's any shortage of conventional sushi options around here) The highlight of the menu for me, however, was the namesake Okonomiyaki, sort of a thick savory Japanese pancake; I'm mildly obsessed with this dish, have tried half a dozen versions of it in NYC, a couple in London, once hiked 5 miles from a subway station in Osaka just to have a reputedly excellent one there, and the one he's offering at OKO is possibly the best I've had outside of Japan; I've enjoyed his take on it at The Cottage too but it's somehow even better here. My understanding is that he's not planning to do too much more with Okonomiyaki at this location, but I hope he eventually showcases it elsewhere through a food truck or snack bar or some such (maybe a Teppanyaki and/or Yakiniku joint?) - you can easily come up with a dozen different variations on it, or even make it customizable like an omelet. Also tried the Agedashi tofu (which was lovely but I wish just a touch more generously portioned), the duck / foie gras gyozi (spectacular), the Pastramen (charming - reminds me of Red Farm's pastrami egg roll - but I wish the broth was a little more intense), and the tempura, and plan to be back soon to try some of the more intriguing items I missed (deviled ramen eggs, sticky ribs in gochujang, crab+squid soba). Dessert is customizable soft-serve ice cream (chocolate and vanilla), which is totally sufficient - my one complaint there is that the candied ginger was annoyingly crunchy (at least after being in contact with ice cream), would be better if he started off with a slightly more adulterated / chewy variety of that. Prices were also astonishingly reasonable - I'd have been perfectly OK with paying 30% more for most of the stuff on the menu. (ice cream $5, beer $6, most small plates $4-$8) Service was excellent / attentive, noise level... high, but unavoidable for the space (and it's a beautiful space). Anyway it's a great place already and I have high hopes for its evolution over the next year or two - if he does indeed move more into sushi I expect he can have a ton of fun with that. (heck, maybe even echo the okonomiyaki with a 'sushi pancake' option inspired by the increasingly-popular conventional-sushi-place 'sushi pizza') One warning: parking is a bit of a challenge with all of the construction going on on that side of the river; arriving at 5:30 on a Saturday, both the neighboring lot and the parking garage across the street were already completely full. Your best bet assuming the weather is decent is probably just to park across the bridge (in Parker-Harding or the library lot) rather than spend 15 minutes slowly circling two cramped lots for a space. read more

Love everything, had the wagyu beef hanger steak, squid ink soba(homemade), Madeira Miso Glazed King Salmon, Grilled shishitos peppers was super delicious and tried many sushi nigiri and temaki. All was very well made with good quality of the ingredients and lots of flavours profile, love it...!!!! If you are a classic sushi guy maybe you will not like it because OKO kitchen making their sushi in a different level. I strongly recommend you to give them a try if you love fresh, good quality and variety of fresh fish. Their sushi is not to fill up your tummy because they give quality not quantity. Julia and her team did a great job serving our family. Well deserved as everyone was very knowledgeable to their menu. Definitely worth the hype. I saw a write up in Forbes on the restaurant and had to try it. I deducted a star for the sticky ribs which were just extremely dry. Everything else was outstanding. We had 3 chef choice hand rolls that were amazing, 2 tuna crispies which are so different, I can eat a bunch of them and then the Wagyu which we felt was the best dish. The Wagyu was tender and a pretty good portion The place is small and that's ok but not if there is a family with little kids next to you, then you can really feel the tight space. Right now they have 2 seats at the bar which are positioned close to the entrance vs the other end of the bar, which most would prefer but they said due to Covid regulations they can't move the seats so it is what is, still a good seat bc you get the great bartender Annie. Annie is awesome!! She is fun and sweet and make delicious drinks. We had the ginger ninja and up in smoke. I preferred the up in smoke but both were fantastic. OKO? OH NO! We were hosting a "distanced birthday dinner" for my son for 11 people on Sunday so my wife called OKO in Westport on Thursday to arrange things and left a message. We hadn't heard back so I called on Friday around noon (as a courtesy to them re a large order,etc to ask about ideal timing to give the details of the order,etc) I got a lengthy voice mail recording ,so I left a message but I followed up with an email. I hadn't heard back re either so I called at 830pm Friday and got a prompt call back a minute later. After explaining my request I was told that a manager would call me back that evening. I did not get a call back Friday evening. I tried again at 430pm on Saturday and was told that the manager was in a meeting and would call me as soon as the meeting ended. I hadn't heard back (long meeting?)so I tried to call but got a recoding(could not get a person) and left a message. Perhaps the manager was explaining the importance of responsiveness and excellent customer service? Its now Tuesday -i never got a response I easily arranged the dinner with anothjer Japanese restaurant that was quick to respond,offered delivery, and were clearly very happy to do the businesss. They were courteous and arranged for delivery. The contrast was striking. I'm not sure I understand why a restaurant wouldn't want the business but I'm certain that I dont understand why they wouldn't have the courtesy to call to decline! Will we ever go back to OKO? Love the food but the service is beyond unacceptable. We've come here many times and have never been impressed with the service, but tonight was atrocious. We had a reservation. When we arrived and checked in I was told we had already been seated, which clearly was not the case as we just walked in the door. To have a hostess give me attitude like I'm in the wrong when you've clearly made an error is unacceptable. We were then luckily seated in a timely manner despite whatever their issue was. We had our drink order taken promptly, then waited over half an hour before our food order was taken. When the waitress came to our table we were asked if we would like to order more. We had not even ordered more than drinks! I'm sorry but the place is too small for a server to not be on top of their tables. As usual when we received our food it was delicious. When we finished I asked to order two more pieces of nigiri, only to be told the kitchen was closed. Would have been helpful to have our server come over and let us know the kitchen was closing in case we wanted anything else. The experience was so poor that it makes us hesitant to return despite how great the food is. We frequently dine in the area and have never had such a poor experience as we had here tonight. As parents of a toddler looking forward to a date night, and paying a sitter to get a nice night out, we were truly let down. read more

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for some time. I just read the Chef had won best restaurant in CT bites. I decided to order the Family Meal To Go Box since it had a variety of items and wanted to know if it would pass the 'kid friendly test' since it is a nicer restaurant in town. The meal came with: -tuna poke over rice (this was really delicious..tuna was fresh..rice was sticky and well seasoned -fried chicken baos (nice flavors..one of the kids ate it without any issue) -sticky ribs (lean, not fatty...tasty..,not overly sweet or salty) -kids salmon bento..rice..salmon, edamame, veggie tempura, miso soup..it was a good 6 oz salmon filet and well cooked.. not rubbery given we had did take out -kids waygu steak..same sides as above..and maybe 4-6 oz of steak and it was perfectly medium rare The amount of food was enough for 4 (2 adults and 2 chidren) without feeling stuffed and priced well. I would definitely order again since there are other items on the full menu that look pretty good to try. I'd suggest ordering ahead a day or two in advance since the time slots to order the family meal seem to fill up fast. read more

VERY DISAPPOINTED! We did the Omakase and the experience left a lot to be desired! Let's start with the parking...good luck with that! Then the seating...we requested counter and what we got was a disaster...no view of sushi chef(was she even sushi trained?)...in highly traffic area next to bar... Our sushi counter experience was like none we ever experienced...usually the chef is creatively interactive in front of us...no visibility or interaction with chef at all! Omakase should be an experience! OKO's selection of 16 courses was not worth the money or experience! Maybe we got 10 pieces of actual sushi...and not even a great chef selection... The others were miso soup(really????that is a free filler in any Asian restaurant and it was not anything special), Foie Gras(not sushi), small piece of meat?, cod (cooked main course?/which was good but again not sushi)and a desert. We were still hungry so we ordered scallops sushi) which was mushy and crab/pork dumplings(where was the crab?) Honestly we spend over$400 and left very dissatisfied! My husband and I had a wonderful meal here! We sat at the bar (my fav) and had awesome service. After eating what seemed like everything on the menu, we can say that there isn't a bad choice. The food is high quality, presented beautifully and authentic. Highlights include the crispy spicy wagyu beef, shishitos (the guanciale!!!) and the lobster bao. We just had the worst experience at Oko. First the restaurant is super small and the tables are all crowded together. Dinner time guests had on sweat pants. No ambience at all. The menu was interesting but no one from the wait staff explained or highlighted anything for us. Waiter/waitress was just an order taker. The items we ordered had no taste, nothing special unless you dipped them in a sauce. The sticky ribs we ordered were very tough, could not bite through the rib meat and the flavor was awful. The gyoza we ordered were burnt and when we asked if they were supposed to be that way the waiter only responded that he would take them off the bill. Horrible. Would not go back. read more

Went there on Saturday 5pm. Ambience great, nice bar and setting as well as convenient location in Westport. Service was friendly and great. The major disappointment was the food and the bill. 1 order of sashimi moriwase, 4 hand rolls and 2 miso soup = $97.00 The sashimi moriwase was So minuscule you needed a magnifying glass to find the pieces. Th hand rolls were good but on the menu it stated 3 handrolls for $15.00 - on the bill $24 for the hand rolls, I queried it and was advised the special offer was for chefs selection of handrolls. I watched Chef Brian Lewis explore the cuisine of Japan on Instagram and couldn't wait to see what came next. I was a huge fan of The Cottage - and was curious if he could translate his Japanese inspiration into something just as great. What a hit! The sushi is so inventive - beware that it's one piece per, so order multiple. We loved the curried cauliflower tempura and want to try the other varieties. The black cod was speedy at $30 but sooooo good. The eponymous okonomiyaki dish was... interesting. Guess you have to like pork belly. The desserts are soft-serve ice cream with toppings - we got the matcha swirl with bittersweet chocolate and crunchy almonds. Service is friendly and relatable. They might want blinds for the bright floor-to-ceiling windows. It's a great date night splurge. Wish Brian were there to congratulate - he's nailed it! read more

Service has deteriorated to the point that the server landed the hand rolls on our drink, upset the drink, got my husband drenched and then blamed it on us. OKO it a hi end Japanese restaurant in Westport Ct I wanted to order a sashimi, the waitress said the plate was $45, and it was the chefs choice. 5 fish 3 pieces each I said OK but I like eel and I don't want white fish on the plate. no problem said the waitress. when the plate came out the first thing i saw was 3 different white fish and no eel. I also notice that everything was in a pile and the salmon and tuna was paper thin. I sent it back and asked again for no white fish. the waitress was very nice and apologized, she said she had told that to the chef. The plate came back out and they had replaced 2 of the fish, 1 with bits of clam and the other with FAKE crab. I couldn't believe this was a hi end restaurant. Overall the seafood was tasteless and dry, and small enough to be an appetizer, but not a main course. I had to ask for soy and wasabi. rice was not served. Not your local sushi joint. Very obviously experienced staff right from the jump gave us perfect treatment. Your hot towels are here, and the table will stay as clean by the end of the meal as it is to start. An excellent drink menu caters to all wallet sizes, and their cocktails are well-picked to sit in a nice middle-ground between sweet and savory. Naturally, this is all second to their food; which is absolutely phenomenal. Quite seriously the best sushi my group has ever had - and honestly the best food I've ever had anywhere, ever.
