Despite driving by here twice a day, I never even noticed Olce until Philadelphia Magazine listed them in their Top 50 (out of ~500 visited) pizza joints in the Philly area: "This petite pizzeria with cheery polka-dot banquettes and shiny wooden cabinets seats only 30 or so [plus shady outside seating], but it is super kid-friendly and has delightful, thoughtfully crafted artisanal pies. The Goat special offers asparagus, goat cheese, sautèed garlic, chives and a sprinkle of hot red pepper." [listed with 7 other places under "Best Toppings"] http://www.phillymag.com/restaurants/best_pizza_in_philadelphia/index.html I'm sure the Philly Mag story has done wonders for Olce's business, but the somewhat out of the way location (a mile down Skippack Pike from the center of Skippack, on the corner of Bustard Road, in the Cedars County Store complex next to 19 Bella, another good restaurant) keeps the attractive restaurant feeling like you've discovered something few others know about. Despite the "kid-friendly" comment, which is probably true, don't worry, this isn't Chuck E. Cheese's! I've BYOBed here once (stems are just OK, so bring your own if you really care) and taken out pizzas many times (which survive the 15 minute drive home pretty well). My favorites include: SHRIMP SCAMPI ($12)--Shrimp, garlic, butter, lemon, white wine, mozzarella, parmesan, spinach (see photo) AUTUMN ($12)--Brussels sprouts, gruyere, mozzarella, pecorino, prosciutto (I know, Brussels sprouts on pizza??? Trust me, it's great!) These are handmade thin crusts (thin, but not flatbread), that tend to be crispy around the edges, and are made with high quality ingredients (you can see washtubs of fresh basil growing outside). Kevin, the owner, always says hello like he means it to customers as he quickly cranks out the 12-inch rounds in the kitchen. It can get a bit slower at prime time on Friday or Saturday, so call ahead for takeout, but at other times I've rarely had to wait for more than 10 minutes. They also offer a variety of sandwiches, salads or desserts, but I've only tried the pizzas (which include classics like Pepperoni or Margherita, as well as more creative fare such as B.L.G.--bacon, leeks, gruyere--and S'mores dessert pizza). There is usually a special on the blackboard, along with art from customer's children (perhaps they have crayons and paper for the kids to play with?). Being a mid-west transplant and having gone to grad school in Chicago, I'm a big Chicago-style fan (especially "stuffed" pizza--but please don't waste your time on the ghastly Uno chain around here), so I'm having trouble finding a Philly pizza I really like. So far, Olce's is probably my favorite, tasty, well made, with high-quality ingredients. My only criticisms are that they tend to be quite salty for my taste, and I like salt (probably at least in part due to the salty cheeses used), and that you need to order double meat on the Pepperoni (pepperoni pizzas shouldn't be dainty!). Maybe my expectations were set too high by the other reviews, but we had a less than stellar experience here, both with the food and service. We sent on a weekend evening, and it was beyond busy. The staff is mostly young high school or college kids who didn't seem to have coordination or control over the dining room. We waited forever to be seated and to have our orders taken, probably at least 30-40 minutes in total. We asked 3 times just to get water. With that said, if the food had been good, we could have forgotten the amateurish service. The salad was very good, but the pizza was awful. I ordered the Margherita pizza and was vastly disappointed. The sauce was extremely watery, which caused the topping to slide off of the crust. On top of that, the dough was not cooked properly as it was too wet to have been able to bake. I saw a few other reviews that commented on this as well. My husband's pizza seemed okay until closer examination - half of the pizza bottom was burnt, and the other half was on the verge. His pizza was at least edible, but not exceptional. It was not anything better than a higher-end chain pizza, I am afraid to say. Maybe they had an off night, but I don't think I'll be returning here. read more

A friend has been bugging me to start writing reviews on Yelp and I keep thinking, "Yeah, I'll probably get around to it someday ..." But last Friday I had a dining experience that made me go, "You know, other people should know about this joint ..." So here I am, yelping for all the world to see. Olce'. Oh baby. It's in that little Cedars Country Store shopping village you may have driven by umpteen times on your way to Skippack. Next time, grab a bottle of wine and head to Olce' before going up the road to putter. My friend and I arrived early -- right after work. We asked for a table for two and the owner (I'm assuming) showed us to a small table in the main area of the dining room. This may be my one beef about this place -- the tables are pretty close together. We explained that we had some dirty talkin' to attend to and we didn't want to offend the other customers. The owner guy sized up me and my fellow hen, noticed the bottle o' vino we were ready to crack open and immediately got our drift. We ended up at a table in a little alcove and our evening was off. Owner-dude himself took our orders and answered a million questions about the different pies and also made some recommendations. It was obvious that he was the Guy Behind the Pie and that he was really passionate about his product. I was stuck on either the Roma or the Roasted Cauliflower Special and eventually opted for the special since the Roma would most certainly be on the menu next time I arrived. My friend got the Shrimp Scampi -- a repeat order for her from a previous visit. This is how good the food was: We completely stopped talking about all of our girly topics to rave to each other about our meals. We swapped a few pieces and while I liked both pies, the cauliflower one really rocked my world -- and I don't even love cauliflower (like it, but not always my first choice). The chef came out to check on us a few times and asked if we wanted to sample his new bread pudding recipe and give him some feedback. Turns out, we wanted to do exactly that. He cautioned us that he thought it was a little dry (we agreed) but other than that, the combo of cinnamon with a brown sugar topping drizzled with chocolate was fantasta-riffic. I ate the whole thing and I wasn't even hungry at that point, the rest of my pizza boxed up and ready to go home with me. The capper: Owner-dude then came out and offered us each a shot of Sambuca. We hung out until we finished our wine (a red 2008 by Apothic, which has now become my new favorite wine) and by that time the place was packed. (Since I'm the first reviewer I'll note that the ambiance is casual and warm. There were several large parties, as well as families and couples.) This place is a real neighborhood gem. I've been here twice and they've definitely delivered on both occasions. The first time, I came with friends and we had the fall special and pepperoni pizzas. I can't remember exactly what the special had besides butternut squash, apples, and some sort of meat (I want to say pork but don't quote me on that). My friends ordered the soup of the day (carrot) and I had the mushroom Carpaccio as apps. I'd pass on the mushroom app since it seemed very plain and the aroma of the carrot soup was very distracting. Second time, I had the carrot soup, shrimp scampi, and s'mores pizza with my bf. I read so many reviews that recommended the shrimp scampi so we had to try it. It definitely didn't disappoint and if you're a fan of garlic, this is a winner. Our s'mores pizza was quite a beauty and garnered many jealous stares from our neighbors. This is a must try for anyone with a sweet tooth! We only wish they sold smaller portions of the s'mores pizza b/c we couldn't finish the whole thing. And the marshmallow goodness just couldn't be reincarnated from our leftovers. If you're in the neighborhood, you have to try Olce. Take advantage of their seasonal pizzas, they're absolutely amazing combinations and everything is very reasonably priced. Olce is our go to place for high end pizza. Pizza is outstanding and they have great salads too. I little on the pricier side, but you get what you pay for. Added bonus is they sell some awesome cupcakes as well! Typically we do take out due to being so local and our two kids under the age of 4. It's a BYOB and they have nice seating indoor and out. Dinner was a mystery tonight, so we decided to grab some pizza someplace close to our new home, and Yelp suggested Olce. Once again, Yelpers hit a home run. Growing up, and living in Philadelphia, we always had access to great pizza, both traditional and upscale. Now in the burbs, we are happy to have picked our new weekly pizza run place in Olce. Salads were fresh and perfect portion. I had the bacon/leek/gruyere pizza, my wife order a Brussels sprout/prosciutto pizza, and my son had a kids pie, with sausage. Not a bad slice in the bunch, and plenty left over for midnight pizza over the kitchen counter. After another customer ordered the s'mores dessert pie, my son made us get one (ok...he did not make us get one). Delicious. Service was great (but as always, we went early on a Tuesday night, so we always get decent-great service as its a slow time), and our waitress was friendly and helpful. The owner stopped by the table and was friendly and informative. His seasonal ingredient approach is wonderful, and welcome. Could be better. The flat bread was great. However the corn pizza we have heard about is not to my liking. It's almost as if they accidentally spilled canned corn on the pizza. It was not roasted and tasted like sweet canned corn. The ranch dressing was tangy, maybe some would like. Best pizza around! My husband and I love coming here--great food, great service, nice ambiance, just an all around great place. My absolute favorite is the corn pizza. The mix of sweet, salty, rustic is unbelievable. My husband is a carnivore so he loves the meat pizza. The salads are delicious too, we always get the house or the wedge. I've officially come here twice now. The service is great and quick. The menu options are generally pizza related. There are some entrees which I have not tried. Also, they heavily advertise appetizers, such as their famous pickles. I have not tried that though. What I have tried are their lunch specials. In a lunch special, you pay about $12 and get a soup or salad, fountain drink, and a personal pan sized pizza. The pizza is actually really generously portioned. It is about the size of your standard dinner plate. The pizza's are nice and flat bread crusted. They have a nice crunch to it. On their menu, they have descriptions of each of their pizza topping options. They give a huge variety for you to choose from. I enjoyed multiple types of pizza, even though I came here only twice so far. I stole a couple of pizza slices from my companions because I wanted to try so many. The only reason I am docking a star is because the food tends to be on the salty and savory side. I like savory, but I am not a big fan of salt. Actually, I prefer my food sweet. Otherwise, the food is very unique. The portions are great. The service is really spot on. One pizza I did like especially was the shrimp scampi. (Shrimp offers natural sweetness.) read more
