I can't get enough of Old Abes! I found out about this establishment about a year ago. The idea of vegan food was really appealing to me for a number of reasons, but I never had the opportunity to try it, until Old Abes. My first meal was the faux duck, which was super delicious! You can get rice and or spinach as a base, along with the "duck" and a few other veggies like shredded carrots and a sauce to put over it all. I have also had the Banh Mi and Citrus Ribs bowls which are both just as good. The Banh Mi sandwich was actually voted best in rochester, so definitely give that a try. Abe is awesome. If you're a vegan or just want to try some delicious food that happens to be vegan check out Old Abe's. The owner and staff and friendly and helpful and the food is consistently amazing. I find myself ordering from them at least once every two weeks. My favorite is the King Pao with half spinach and my husband loves the rib sandwich. Everything we've tried there has been good though. They also have amazing coffee, smoothies and other drinks. Shockingly good (from the perspective of a life-long avid carnivore)! I've dabbled with vegetarian/vegan offerings at several restaurants and have never been satisfied by the taste. I tried Herbivorous Butcher's products elsewhere after reading the hype that their offerings "taste just like real meat" and left confused and unsatisfied. Perhaps those singing the praises of Herbivorous Butcher's products have forgotten what "real meat" tastes like was my only way of explaining the discrepancy. So it was with a healthy amount of skepticism (and fear?) that I stepped foot into the little shack housing Old Abe Coffee Company. The quirky decor marked by Star Wars and Ultimate Muscle toy figurines immediately began to calm my nerves. Overall, the vibe felt like something you'd find in the hipster capital of the world (i.e. Portland, OR). My alarm bells went off again after hearing the familiar beep of a microwave going off, but alas my fears were not justified. Over the course of several take-out visits with a few poke bowls (Korean BBQ, citrus spare ribs, spicy salmon), vegan bacon bahn mi, and mock duck po' boys in my belly, I am happy to report that Old Abe serves delicious food. This place has delicious food! I get the Korean BBQ Bulgogi and it's great, when I've gone with people who aren't vegan they really liked it too. The flavor and texture of the "beef" was perfect and I also liked the little chick pea puffs in it. I enjoyed a flavorful (ginger, soy peanut sauce?) lunch bowl of brown rice with veggies and beans. Edamame, Chick Peas, carrots, radish, red cabbage. Yum! And no doctor visit needed after for high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure. The little chick pea puffs were a delightfully crunchy and slightly naughty (and tasty) touch. In fact, while I was eating I called my wife and told her she had to get down here and try this place! She really enjoyed her lunch too! Bonus: sat outside on patio behind the little house and got to watch people playing pickle ball next door in the park. Also, they have a huge outdoor scrabble game on the metal siding of the little garage. Check out the big magnetized tiles inside and play a seven letter word like healthful. Old Abe is our favorite place to eat and get coffee in all of Rochester. It's super kid-friendly(we have toddler who loves the play room and the toys) and they love the food. The coffee is really good, but we mostly go for the vegan sandwiches(particularly the bahn mi) and the poke bowls(my favorite is the citrus "spare ribs" with half spinach) . The are so great! We joke and say that most restaurants in Rochester are "Rochester good"(meaning they're good or fine, but wouldn't survive in a big city), but Old Abe is so high quality and delicious, that it could survive and thrive in LA, Portland, Seattle or New York. This is a GEM. Been a vegan for 12yrs and came at the recommendation of a friend. Was interviewing for residency at Mayo, and was only in town for a few days. Old Abe's makes me want to come here! Cute kitzy little place with on street parking. If you're looking for a regular coffee or espresso with a biscotti (like a S*******s), this will disappoint you. Coffee is all cold brew.
