Today I had the BLT which IMHO is the best around because they don't spoil it with Texas toast. Plus, the bacon is rif*ckingdiculously good. The flavors in the sandwich are perfect. Mom had the grilled cheese and bisque, and while hers was delicious too she envied my BLT all afternoon. She ordered the English Breakfast Beer and I tried the Observer. Both paired perfectly with our lunch. Most of the beers hover around 5% with a great variety of styles. The space is unique and suits the overall vibe of the place. I had my wedding (of about 100) here in April. And let me say it turned out so beautifully! Gina was amazing and was so kind and helpful throughout the entire process. We had both the ceremony and reception in their event space and the space itself is so unique and beautiful we didn't have to decorate that much ourselves! Compared to other venues, especially in St. Louis, we saved a lot of money by going with Old Bakery Beer. The food was amazing, the drinks were phenomenal and the staff was friendly, professional and hard working. Old Bakery beers are widely available in St. Louis, so I already knew they had great products, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out they have a great brewery experience as well! They have a great atmosphere, full menu (with many vegetarian and vegan options), and fun events going on weekly. If I lived in Alton I would probably be here all the time! Our main takeaway is... Come for the beer, not for the food. The beer was good, we enjoyed it! The menu looked awesome so we decided to give it a try. Some things were good but other things it felt like they had never tasted the recipe before serving. The Caesar salad looked awesome but tasted bland, not enough flavor to the dressing. I ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Honestly... it was terrible! It sounded amazing on the menu, but the cheese wasn't melted all the way and the tomato soup was almost intolerable. Seriously, this tomato soup was bad. It was like they served me cheap tomato sauce. I did really really like the broccoli salad that came as a side. My boyfriend got the brisket melt and thought it was really good, much better than mine. The space is really interesting and enjoyable to be in. The beer is very good, but the food was disappointing. We went on St. Patrick's day and they had green beer and corned beef and cabbage as a special. The corned beef and cabbage was undercooked and under seasoned. The cuts of beef were very, very fatty and the potatoes had some rotten spots. We asked to exchange the beef for another item and they were more than happy to do that for us. The atmosphere was great and the tables were comfortable for our 5 person party. Service is rock solid, received a complete run down of the taps with honest feedback. I'm a sucker for IPA's and they didn't disappoint. And for what it's worth Gentile Giant is dangerously good. A double shouldn't have that type of drinkability. Kitchen hit a home run with the murry. It's a grilled cheese version of a club in all the good ways. What a great find. Located in the heart of Alton, Old Bakery brewery just may be one of the best in the area. Their beer is great. I tried the Moka Java Milk Stout and the Porter. Both were fantastic. Their real surprise standout, however, is their cocktails. My favorite cocktail is the Old Fashioned and when I saw it listed on their menu I had to try it. Now, I have had many old fashions at many places. Most taste average at best. Either they water it down too much or they don't add the proper amount of bitters. This particular cocktail though was as close to perfect as I could find. It may have been the best I had. The gentleman who made it was a great mixologist. He even made what he called a "Bloodless Mary" for my gf. She says that was also great. I also recommend the "chili-rita". So if you enjoy good beer and expertly made cocktails and are anywhere near the St. Louis area, head to Alton and skip Fast Eddie's... this should be the new Alton hot spot. read more

This was my second visit to Old Bakery. We absolutely love the beer! So many great varieties and I love the organic options. We decided to come for vegan night- my husband ordered the black bean smash burger. It was a large serving and very tasty! I ordered the black bean and quinoa tacos- unfortunately they were not great. I asked for for corn tortillas - they tasted like cardboard. I ate the filling and left the shells-- there was barely any filling... Good thing my husband shared his meal with me:) I know they have good food and delicious beer- just don't order those tacos! read more

Where do you start with a place like this? This is my favorite St. Louis area brewery and for good reason. Awesome idea to repurpose the old Colonial Bakery into a great brewery/brewpub. Atmosphere is awesome with an unique rustic, industrial design. Shuffleboard and darts are a nice little extra while drinking some of the best beers around. Not only does the variety span a wide selection of styles, but each is delicious and executed wonderfully. The level of care and passion for brewing really comes through in each beer. Citrus Wheat, North End IPA, Golden Oat, Hibiscus Tart, and Extra Special Pub Ale are just a few of my favorites. And to top it all off, almost all of their beers are certified Organic. Which is an impressive little extra perk if you have this concern. And if you are looking for some good eats, they have your back there too. The home made pretzels with beer cheese and stone ground mustard are a true treat, the selection of sandwiches are outstanding, and their Cuban is one of the best I have ever had. Plus, they switch up their menu each season and add occasional daily specials, so there is always something new to try. Finally but definitely not least, the service has always been top notch with a staff that is always kind, courteous, and pleasant. We have been many times and are never disappointed with the service we have received or any other aspect for that matter. You won't be disappointed with Old Bakery Brewing. When you walk in you see the process of brewing the beer. It has a factory musty smell to it, but I like it. The night we went they had live music and the vibe was set. So I stopped in here for lunch and was immediately impressed. It's not a large menu they have a great selection of craft beers and cocktails. Since I was working I didn't have a chance to have a beer but ordered a hamburger with cheese and bacon and it came with a bacon jam which was amazing. Fresh homemade chips, it was probably one of the best hamburgers I've ever had. My husband and I took a quick overnight date up to Grafton last week. We stopped en route at OBB as we've had their beer before and figured we'd grab a glass and snack on our way up the river. We had the wings and some of their house made pickles. Both were amazing and as self proclaimed pickle-aholics we were in love. The space is charming and the rest of the me is was very appealing. When we headed back home the next day we stopped back for lunch. My husband got the wings again, as they really are great, and I got the daily special fish and chips. The fish is HUGE! Perfectly battered, crispy, and super flavorful. However, the fries are a complete disappointment. I still can't figure out why people serve those coated prefrozen fries when fresh cut, made in house will always be better. And potatoes are cheap! Thankfully the fish was so huge I didn't need the fries but I encourage them to either buy a better frozen option or start making them in house. Everything else seems to be made there and I know they can make better themselves! Overall still love the place and we'll definitely be back! read more

Locally sourced food that is absolutely amazing. The atmosphere is spectacular, they often host art shows and live entertainment. The menu is super and always being updated. Oh and if you like craft beer you'll love this place with its assortment of its own brews along with other regional favorites. If you're in the Alton area it is definitely worth giving it a try. Gave this place another try after my prior experience. Management was nice enough to send me a gift certificate to give them another try, which was a nice gesture. I must say, this experience was much better. They were fairly busy on a Saturday afternoon but we were waited on promptly. The server was nice. I had their coffee beer (Single Source Coffee Lager) which I really enjoyed. The food was good not great. I think the best thing we had were their homemade pickles. The Cuban sandwich was good as well. It seems they have worked out the kinks compared to my last visit. All of the other servers appeared to be working quickly as well. The beer was uninspired, even on tap, and the food was blanned. I ordered a double cheeseburger, which came out with a single patty. After pointing this out to our server, I then had to wait several minutes for the second patty, which they brought out on a separate plate, so I had to add it to the burger that had been sitting in front of me for several minutes by hand, as the server did not deem it appropriate to take the burger back and have it assembled properly. I'd hoped the burger would be amazing after such a ridiculous experience, but it was absolutely boring. I've yet to be back, though I did make the poor decision to buy one of their canned beers outside of the brewery, a "double" IPA. It was the definition of "meh". read more

I wanted to go some place different for lunch and this place fit the bill. They only opened a few weeks ago, but expect to see great things happening at The Old Bakery. They did there best to maintain the integrity of the old Continental Bakery, plus adding their industrial touches with the beer making process. It is a little bit of a maze to get into the food/slash drinking area. We were greeted by a very knowledgeable server. I order 4 beers for my flight, one was a coffee beer ( I am a sucker for coffee, in any form). I like to go for the lighter beers. My lunch companion picked a mixture of light and dark. I was more excited about the food. They have 4 appetizers and 2 different types of soup. The server informed us that they were still in a soft opening and to expect more food options on our next visit. My companion had the beer cheese soup, I got to have a taste.... very smooth and not to heavy. I had the grilled cheese with onions. My sandwich was served on sourdough bread, with smoked gouda and mozzarella and caramelized onions. Each sandwich comes with Billy Goat chips and a pickle.... My friend had the BLT. He was as pleased as I was. Prices were nice under $20 for flight and lunch.... They plan on adding an event room. Fast Eddies is in for some competition.. We visited on a Tuesday evening for a Yelp event and had dinner after in the beer hall. My guy was really impressed with the Gentle Giant beer. We were both impressed with the flavors and portion sizes of our sandwiches. He got the Cuban, I got the BLT. We swapped halves so we could try them both. The Cuban was good and well made. The BLT was really good. The bacon was some of the best I've had and instead of sliced tomatoes they use a tasty tomato jam and garnish with a garlic mayo. The tomato soup was a bit thicker than we prefer and I'd love to try it as a marinara with garlic cheese bread. They source they're ingredients locally and are striving to be certified organic and local for both the brewery and the food menu. The owners are super nice and knowledgeable so definitely talk beer with them. Looking forward to seeing their beer and food develop as they've only been open since December 2014. Roast beef sandwich was great with the kicker chips. The caramelized onions are a nice touch to the sandwich. They also sale and refill growlers to take home. I was the only one sitting at the bar. Most all tables were filled with people eating or finished eating. The bar tender was almost impossible to I get his attention. I finally had a beer and ordered a cheese burger. One hour later and two beers I still did not have my food. This is not the first time for extremely slow or ignored service. This place was, as far as breweries go, a little underwhelming. The walk to the dining area was cool, as you are able to peek in on the brewing area and they have some neat artwork and some Alton zoning maps. I came with my family, it is ok to bring the kids in, and so we had a pretty big spread. Pretzels with beer cheese was ok, but I felt like the cheese was a bit bland and there wasn't enough. Chicken nachos had the same cheese on them, but the chicken was seasoned nicely (these were the highlight). Billy goat chips were pretty standard, even the spicy variety. We got some meals as well. My dad had a pork tenderloin sandwich he described as "coleslaw on a bun," Some mediocre grilled cheese, and I had an ok meatball sub, nothing really special. Drinks! It was a little early in the day, so I didn't really get to try too many of their brews. The ones I did try were alright. We got a beer flight but none of them really stood out. They also have a kind of "hipster" feel only using locally bottled sodas, which was kind of coll. Final verdict is that this place has some good ideas, they just don't quite execute on them. I could definitely see this place taking off if they improve on what they have in place. I'd like to give them another shot sometime and really try out some of their other beers, this rating could definitely improve. read more

Meh. I've been here a few times, hoping that maybe it will be better, and I'm never surprised. The beer is ok, but that is about it. I ordered a sandwich - The Bruce Springsteen...the meat was pretty dry. I can see why they cover it in BBQ and (?) canned cheese. And the sides are sad...for $10, you should be getting a little more than a sad sandwich and a bag of chips. The company I was with said the baked beans tasted strange. The kids menu...I'm, I can make a crap ton of PBJs at home for $5. Having 3 meal choices for children (two sandwiches and a not so awesome cheese-only flat bread doesn't make you kid friendly). I know it's more of a bar...but, just a warning for those with the kiddos. I don't know. I want to like the place, but I just can't. read more

Such a great place to spend a relaxing Sunday afternoon! Wow! There's a great parking outside that leads you to their entrance. Inside, you walk past their brewing equipment before reaching a huge hall with a waiting area and a few displays. Sign boards lead you to the seating area, the pool table and a few other game tables. Once we were seated, we were promptly attended to despite the huge crowd. We ordered for a flight of 4 beers - perle pill, yellow beer, hibiscus tart and an anniversary special. The hibiscus tart was the best! It was fragrant and summery and we couldn't resist ordering a pint of that again! The pretzels were a good starter- served hot along with a cheese dip and a mustard dip. For lunch we got : Brisket sandwich- so, so good! The sauce inside was definitely the highlight and the meat was just melting in my mouth. I opted for spicy chips on the side that was served in a little paper bag. Very cool!
