Now... the kitchen was moving a bit slow this visit. Was it noticeable? Yes. Was it worth the wait? Also yes. Because Sam -- the female bartender -- absolutely made the experience. Fun, engaging, and the kind of personality that makes you feel like you're already a regular even if it's your first visit. That kind of service turns a "slow day" into a good memory. The menu is packed with authentic Irish favorites, and honestly, next time we're absolutely going to lean fully into the classics -- because this feels like a place that does traditional comfort food right. One small wish: I really wish they made their own chips. The bagged chips were a little lackluster and felt like a missed opportunity next to an otherwise hearty, made-with-care menu. Overall: a great spot that was likely just having an off day -- and still absolutely worth your time. Don't leave without ordering the pear cider. It is absolutely fabulous. I ordered for starters the cup of Irish Beef Stew never experienced a stew like this before, go and order that because I don't want to spoil the magic. Morrison's is one of the biggest reasons we drive from St Charles, MO to Alton. It's a beautiful drive and so worth it because the Irish food is so freaking good. The beer is cold and perfectly bubbly. The Irish shots are delicious. The atmosphere is exactly what you think it should be- it's small, usually filled with people and can be loud. Sometimes smells like smoke inside but it's not too terrible. Staff is always super nice and helpful. On Thursday's they do Sea Shanties, which we haven't been able to see yet but everyone talks about. Other nights they have live music. Such a fun pub atmosphere!! read more

Went there for an early dinner on a Saturday for my birthday. I have to honestly say, this is the only restaurant in Alton that hasn't disappointed me. Do you want to go there if you're on a tight time schedule? No. Do you want to go there with your party of ten? Again, no. Do you want to have a great meal? Then absolutely yes. One of the few times I've been served a proper bangers & mash. The drinks we ordered from their specialty menu were delicious as well. They have some excellent whiskeys as well (Redbreast, etc.). Not really my kind of place - but my opinion doesn't matter, I guess, since a lot of people love coming here. Recently, Morrison's got a lot of attention as the featured Main Street small business on the TV show Small Business Revolution (Alton was selected as the host city this year). Hey, that's great - even though I never even heard of the show! Food was alright, and so was the staff service. I've had their Irish Slinger (see photo) which was okay. I mean, it was different. I thought it would be bigger! It's interesting how they incorporate Irish culture and all onto their menu - like for example, I didn't even know what a boxty was! Or fish and chips (you actually get potato chips, not fries like a lot of other places). That's another thing: the fish and chips were alright. They were no different than other places. Just another reminder - you'll be getting Guinness chips (or what they call 'crisps') instead of french fries. They do have local craft beer, including Old Bakery. And of course, they have Guinness. The atmosphere wasn't really for me. Also, my food took long (well, I'll cut 'em some slack, it was during rush hour) since there was only ONE cook in the back. Owners seemed nice, but their attention was mostly focused on the regulars. They didn't seem to like that I asked them so many questions and that I'm a Yelper. The owners said they are trying to make it a cozy place, and they have succeeded according to some people. They do play Irish music (no Cranberries, no U2, at least from my two visits there) and they do have live music on certain nights. If you are into Irish food and culture, then Morrison's is your place. read more

Stopped in to grab a pint, and had a wonderful time. The food looks tremendous - planning that for next time - the staff was very friendly. While I was there, some folks with instruments started playing and before I knew it we were all singing old Irish songs together and having a great evening. I went here with my husband yesterday for lunch. The place is small!! Only about six small booths. That aside, the food was amazing. Appetizers: We ordered the Irish flag wings and a cup of Irish beef stew as appetizers. The wings were a mixed review for us. We both really liked the red sauce it was just right, neither of us used the strip of ranch down the middle, it was unnecessary (only there in my opinion to make the white strip of the Irish flag). The green wings were a very mild and a hit with me, I felt them ti be a nice balance but my husband wasnt a fan and ended up dipping his green wings into the leftover red sauce on the plate. The stew was amazing and both my husband and I agreed that next time we had better get a bowl so we don't fight about who got more! Entrees: I got the Dublin chicken sandwich. It was great! The chicken was cooked perfectly and the garlic aioli was perfect. I wanted to lick the little plastic cup it came in! My husband got the lamb burger cooked medium. He LOVED it. I know this not onky because he said so with his mouth half full of the second bite but also because he finished the whole thong without stopping to say he inhaled it is an understatement. I looked across the table at one point and feared for anyone who might come between him and that burger. Dessert: My favorite part of any meal! We ordered the Chocolate Whiskey Bread Pudding. This was soooo good that I dreamt about it last night. Seriously, it is really that good. If you walk out of this restaurant without trying it you have committed a great injustice upon yourself. read more

Stopped by on the way back from a biking trip we were tired and hungry. This is a local pub with beautiful wood interiors and warm atmosphere. My fiancé and I ordered a boxty, banger and mash, and cottage pie along with a cider and Irish coffee. The Irish coffee was OK, strong boozy flavor but the cream on top was a little tangier/sour than expected. The banger and mash was just okay as well, potato, cheese, and sausage was lukewarm, but the cabbage mixed in with the potato was cold. The cottage pie was alright, minimal meat with what tasted like veggies that came out of a bag of premixed frozen vegetables. The boxty was the best part, so warm and tasty, both sauces were very yummy as well. I forgot the ciders name but it was very good. The thing that bothered me the most was service. Our waitress was friendly and nice, but she went in and out of the restaurant with other patrons/friends, chatted with other people at the bar who seem like locals and wasn't very attentive to us. I get that this is a local small town pub and most people know each other, but come on, no one wants their hot foods cold. Atmosphere was great tho, live band and all. read more

The staff at Morrison's did not disappoint! I thoroughly enjoyed my corned beef sandwich, and couldn't have made it any better! But the star of the show was the beef stew! Not at all what we were expecting after viewing the website, came here today for our 18th wedding anniversary lunch really wish we wouldn't have. First its very small , there is one waitress and one very very slow cook. We arrived after 2pm on a Sunday thinking it wouldn't be busy. We were wrong it was crowded with what appeared to be a group of 50 year old women celebrating a birthday and super loud because they had 3 men singing playing a guitar in a booth instead of oh say a stage like in most normal pubs. Im not sure if they were customers or they were paid singers and the louder the patrons got the louder the men sang gave me a migraine thanks for that by the way thats the only thing that happened fast, The waitress came by to take our order, bring our order and pay our bill nothing else we even said this was our first time there her response was "there are lots of sandwiches on the menu" gee thanks for the info glad I can read. Then comes the food after 40 minutes, my bun was so soggy it was leaking fluid while I tried to eat it. My hubby said the Guinness was good but that his fish and chips left much to be desired an was pretty pricey for the portion, we couldn't really talk in there it was so loud, not exactly the sweet anniversary lunch I was hoping for. My husband is Irish and he said this definitely is one pub he will not care to revisit. We left as soon as we could the slowness of everything makes you feel like you are held hostage... I've been in Alton for the last 6 months and I can't believe I haven't written a review of this little gem or even checked in.. they have been on my rotation since day 1. Ok, you can always get the traditional Guinness (I know terrible, but there seems to be a whole in my glass)... but the also have a whole selection of other Irish beers and the food is absolutely delectable. They have this "Bubble & Squeak" soup that is a cream based stew that they do offer in a cup and bowl... but screw that, just send out the pot I'll lick it clean!!!! I've also had the "Bos Pony" which is beef brisket topped with cabbage and cheddar served over a boxty... the portion size is enough to feed a family from most third world countries for a week and it's delicious!! I can't say enough good things about this joint!! Finally they always have Irish folk sing alongs on Thursday evenings and you feel welcome and it's a great time... Driving through Alton for the Great American Eclipse we chanced upon this awesome Irish pub! The environment is very genuine and warm. The server was very friendly and the food delicious and authentic! The fare was probably more authentic than any I've had in Chicago. The Irish Beef Stew was a traditional beef stew with carrots, onion, and celery, a Guinness based gravy, and topped with a dollop of mashed potatoes. Served with a side of Irish soda bread which was traditional buttermilk based Irish bread with whiskey glazed currants. Stew was hearty and the soda bread addictive! They get their bread made exclusively for them from a nearby bakery. We also split an order of the Bog Pony which is an open-faced boxty (Irish potato pancake) topped with shredded corned beef brisket, cabbage, Irish cheddar, and horseradish sauce. YUM! The potato pancakes were perfectly seasoned. The brisket was succulent, the cabbage perfectly cooked and the horseradish sauce perfect on the side for dipping/pouring. I'd come here again in a heartbeat for some Irish hospitality and that soda bread! They also have a great selection of Irish beers on tap and a wall o' whiskeys. read more
