Loved the indoor ferns and terrariums. I stop by whenever I'm in the area for meetings. The staff is first rate.

Nothing has changed since my last review but I feel compelled to clarify that the consistently rude, off-putting customer service is primarily from the indoor check-out staff. While some outdoor staff can also be off-putting, several are exactly as one would hope for - friendly, attentive, knowledgable. I get the impression that the inside staff might not like that so much. read more

Lovely store and garden center! I don't know why so many reviews are claiming the staff is rude, they've been nothing but kind! The staff is incredibly helpful and they wrap and bag your plant purchases so carefully! I have bought multiple orchids here and one of which was an oncidium type in full bloom. The kind lady who had rung me up wrapped up that orchid so well I didn't loose a single flower and this was in winter! And the prices are great! I can't see how people could say otherwise. I scored a nice, fairly large staghorn fern for only $20! Besides the large variety of plants, they have an abundance of potting options, so much so that they have a whole separate building for just that. This has become one of my favorite shops! Every time I go here I end up feeling very conflicted. On the one hand, they have a great selection of everything -- indoor plants, outdoor plants, planters, etc. On the other hand... the staff inside can be very rude, the prices are sky high, and even outside sometimes you are made to feel like an intruder instead of a customer. Overall the outdoor staff are knowledgeable, and some are gracious, but you often feel like it is an inconvenience to them to help you, once you finally get their attention. I bought a large, pricey indoor plant recently, only to get it home and discover it was infested with both mealybugs and white flies. Yes, I should have checked it over carefully before purchasing. But that shouldn't happen at a place that charges premium prices. I have been willing to pay those prices given the selection available (ie -- I don't have to go to more than one place to find everything I need), and because I want to support independent (not big box) stores. I also got vietnamese mint last year that it turns out had a spider mite infestation that spread to my other herbs. So I think my days of shopping here are finally over. read more

I've gone here a couple times and haven't had a problem. Employees seem nice enough BUT when I visited yesterday again my visit was going ok an employee even asked me if I was finding everything ok. Fast forward to my check out!! I'm waiting to checkout, there was another customer ahead of me, the cashier checked her out and subsequently ignored me she didn't even acknowledge me and walked away!! I stood there waiting and after five minutes of waiting an older gentleman finally asked me if I was checking out? While I'm standing there with a cart full of flowers.. I'm on the fence about going back.....maybe I'll check to see if the red head older woman is there first before shopping because she was ignorant and rude beyond my understanding!! Saw an advertisement for their Christmas shop and brought my mother sister aunt and cousin. We were all excited to find a new place to get some unique decorations and gifts. The place was packed with decorated trees and when we walked in my sister must have brushed against one and it fell to the ground and shattered the sales lady came running over saying loudly " You're gonna pay for that, you're gonna pay for that you broke it". Left a bad taste in our mouths, and while i found many things I would have bought, the 16.00 ornament that broke that we paid for was more money than we wanted to spend there. Hope it was worth it to the shop owner. Would never recommend this place to anyone . Spent 180.00 dollars at the next shop. Poor poor customer service read more

Love this place for both summer gardening (the varieties of tomato's and peppers is stunning, great herb selection). The house plants are great: a variety of sizes and starts. Cost isn't cheap, but isnt insane and the plants are quality. You get what you get and it's GOOD! Love this spot. read more

I went to Old Country Gardens because in the past the folks had been helpful. I think there must have been a shift change or something because I encountered two women who acted too busy to help or suggest what type of plants would be appropriate for my Mother's and Brother's grave site. They also were very short with offering advice on watering and care - it was like pulling teeth. They couldn't wait to get my money and then moved on to picking their nails. I don't even think I was wished a good day. I did buy the plants since they were nice and I had to get back to work. When I have more time and I need plants , I will look elsewhere. thank you. read more

This garden center is one of my favorite places in Delaware to pick up plants. I'm a plant lover and have over 100 house plants. The plants from Old Country Gardens are always super healthy which is important. They have a really great selection of mini plants for terrariums and large tropical plants and everything in between. I make a lot of terrariums to give to friends. (See the photo for an example of the terrariums I've created with their lovely mini plants). The staff is very helpful, in the winter I had them cut birch logs so I could make several centerpieces and also to use in outside bourbon barrel winter flower arrangements. I also appreciate that this garden center is located in Delaware and that you don't have to pay sales tax on your purchases. I love supporting a local business. Old Country Gardens provides an amazing variety of healthy plants. The atmosphere is breathtaking. I've purchased most of my house plants from here. My only complaint is the staff. They can be unfriendly. I spend lots of money there and whenever I request something as simple as wrapping my plants in protective paper, they give me a hard time. First-time at a plant nursery. This place is cool and franganted with so many different plants. I was overwhelmed by what I saw. So many beautiful plants, pots and all things gardening. One of the fun and cool way to shop here is: little red wagons are provided as shopping carts. Stumbled upon this nursery on yelp... I was super surprised to find one so close to me and thought I'd give it a try. Decided to go on an adventure assuming I'd find the same variety of plants that you'd find at your local chain store. I WAS WRONG. Found and bought the only Ficus Elastica - Red Ruby, which was one of the plants on my wish list. I was stoked to see it! I honestly thought that would be a plant I'd have to order online. Thankfully it was theeee last one and was in great condition!!! Also found a Pilea Peperomioides! Also a plant that I thought I'd have to order online... and boy was I wrong! I ended up buying those 2 along with a Heart Fern (only mature one) and a Croton Magnificent. All of the plants seemed reasonably priced. Their Burgandy Rubber Trees are definitely a bargain! If I didn't have one already, I would've bought another! Huge 3 gallons containers for like $19.99! Overall, I loved my first time experience here and am extremely happy with the plants I found midway through Winter! read more

My review pertains to their landscaping service. I am planning to completely renew my front yard landscaping and scheduled an appointment to meet at my home. After waiting 2 weeks the landscaper didn't show up. I called and was told he couldn't make it that day. He claimed he sent a text but none was received. He sent the message to the wrong number and he was unapologetic. I thought I'd give it another try and made a new appointment 1 week later. On the day we were to meet he messaged me and said he drove by my home and it was too small a job....he probably went to the wrong address. read more

Find a company that actually wants to do business you before shopping at Old Country Gardens. Under staffed, inefficient, not customer focused and they lose your order paperwork with all your personal details on it. 1st: During their 30% off sale, we wanted to buy a tree. We waited 10 minutes for someone to help us as we stood by the trees, then went it get help at the front desk and they told us someone would be out and ended up waiting another 15 minutes. Finally, had to go grab a random employee who gave us a tag and said 'go for it'. 2nd: While we got 30% off our tree, we still agreed to pay the $150 delivery and installation fee that was to happen in 7-10 days. Fine, but they never called. We called them twice and never got a response. Finally, now 10+ days and several attempts later, we send an email and finally get a phone call. 3rd: During the phone call, they tell us that a) their employees did not communicate that we had called before (not our problem); that b) THEY LOST OUR PAPERWORK (not our problem) and c) that they should have never sold us the tree to begin with because it would go into shock since it was so mature! (Really, really not our problem) This place obviously does not have their priorities in line because focusing on the customer is not one of them. All the plants should be watered and handled before you open so that your staff was free to help your customers. The response we received is that the next time we are in, we will get a gift card (no amount disclosed). They should have paid for the tree and the installation when it could be installed in the fall or offered us a credit on a tree that could be installed now. Thank you old country gardens. My husband I purchased a house last fall and when spring rolled around I was lost at what to put in my planters. A very helpful employee whose name I unfortunately did not get, found me wandering helplessly through rows of plants with a list of things from BHG written on a sticky note. I told her the size of my containers, sunlight on the front of my house, and the amount of effort I wanted to put in (basically none) and she spent 20 minutes walking me through rows of plants and helped me pick ones that would work together and would look nice through the spring. I really appreciated her time and patience, especially since it was a very busy Saturday for them and the place was pretty packed. read more

For 30 years I have frequented this unique treasure box to enjoy the ever changing gift shop "fairy land" not to mention the beautiful outdoor plant display! It's a must see. If I feel blue/in a rut, I pop in for a quick pick me up and maybe find a unique greeting card or herb. There is a huge selection of quality plants that you don't see everywhere, and the layout makes it pleasant and easy to skim through the vast sellectiins. I have found great customer service and received knowledgeable and friendly tips. The ONLY reason I didn't give it a 5 is that one does pay for the quality offered and some of the prices don't match my pocketbook. read more

I have several shady spots around my house. Couldn't get anything to grow there until I went to Old Country Gardens and visited their extensive choices of shade-loving plants.that was several years ago. Now, every spring and summer these beautiful plants and flowers appear and prosper, much to my delight. I have not seen shady plant selections as extensive elsewhere as I could at OCG. Additionally, when I need advice on garden issues, the staff at OCG has been pleasantly helpful. OCG's 30% sale in June is not to be missed. For the impatient folk, get there early as it gets REALLY busy there. Old Country Gardens is my favorite spot in the area for home & garden supplies...forget Lowes or Home Depot. Yes, this place can be pricey, but I am willing to pay a little extra for the outstanding selection of products and excellent customer service you receive here. Come during Christmas-- their indoor shop is quite magical! Just left the store and it was the second time that I was made to feel as if I was an inconvenience to the owners/management. No one smiles, I got rolled eyes and a huff after I was going to add some items to my purchase. I was told they were closing. So, they lost a sale and a customer. You are made to feel very unwelcome and not appreciated as a customer. The last time I visited this store I had to ask three times for help finding something before the woman behind the counter would help me.
