Took a California cousin to this restaurant several years ago(not my first visit!) and she was apprehensive based on the outside. By the time we had made a first trip to the buffet, she was in awe and made two trips back. We were very fortunate that a group from a visiting Canadian Choir were also dining and one of the gentlemen joined Mr. D in serenading us all. What a great experience. Great experience. Fried chicken was good as were the ribs and pork chops. I will say the sides left little to be desired. Sweet potato and cabbage were good but the Mac and cheese I could have done without. In fact I did. Corn on the cob appeared to be frozen while the slaw and potato salad were "store bought" variety. Cobbler was good - hubby scarfed it down. Mr D was delightful as was the entire staff. Place is an old mercantile and I enjoyed the building itself. Probably biggest put off was the $15.95 per person. No way between the two of us could we have consumed $32.00 worth of food. read more

This place is a gem you need to experience for yourself. The people are just as wonderful as the food. You come for the fried chicken and the southern cooking but you stay for the staff. They absolutely spoiled us, including Mr. Davis serenading us right at the table. It's a place we will continue to come to every time we are in town. read more

Been there 4 times now and have enjoyed it every time. It's a long nice ride from Hammond, LA, but worth the trip, especially on a motorcycle. The food is fantastic and so is the owner of the store, Mr. D. His chicken is fried to perfection in every way. It's crispy as can be but not hard to bite into like some fried chicken. Tender, crispy, juicy and flavorable, just like it should be.And if you're lucky, Mr. D. will entertain you with some good ole singing. We drove an extra 2.5 hours out of our way to try this chicken, and it did not disappoint. It was moist, crispy and delicious. The buffet of sides were equally as good but the chicken was definitely the star of the show. Don't be afraid of the outside, or location of this place. It is literally in the middle of no where, and is in an old general store (hence the name). Knick knacks line the walls and it reminds you of antique stores you would visit with your parents on the weekends. We went here to eat a couple of weeks ago and sadly it seems to be one of those businesses that Food Network made famous and now the food SUCKS!! The chicken was awesome...but nothing else was good!! No cheese in the mac and cheese, it was watery. The greens had no seasoning and no flavor...dumped out of a can and heated up. The potato salad was store bought...this is the South...shame on you!! Our server was indifferent and not very attentive. They only take cash and it was expensive!!! I won't be back and I work in a business that was recommending this place to our tourists....NOT ANYMORE!! Tiny starving kitten outside the front of the business and when I asked if anyone was caring for it, I was told "we don't feed those things...there are about 80 more behind the building you can have if you want them", that's so sad...starving animals and you take no responsibility to get them spayed or neutered....ignorance and greed!! read more

Fantastic fried chicken which is well worth any drive you have to make! Side dishes are also very good - especially enjoyed the potato salad and green beans. Both are seasoned very well. Mr D is very friendly and makes you feel welcome. His serenade to diners is a lot of fun too! Blackberry cobbler with ice cream is a great way to finish your meal. This place is an eclectic hole in the wall located in a former general store on the side of US 61. Lunch is buffet style, but Mr. D. sure whips up the best fried chicken ever.
