At the back of the 140 year old store you'll see Arthur Davis - creator of the wonderful fried chicken that is known for miles around. Once you walk in the door and make your way around some of the antiques setup, you then walk your way to the back left into an open room with a buffet. The buffet is amazing! The singing is far and away better than the food... After seeing this restaurant highlighted on The Food Network, my family and I finally decided to make a day trip of it and give it a try. I'm a true foodie, so I was really excited about eating some good food and maybe finding a treasure or two in the old store. I'm not sure I could have been more disappointed. The store itself wasn't the cleanest and the shelves were overly crowded with items, most of which were collecting dust, but since the tables and linens seemed clean and the food was located in another area, I decided to keep an open mind. The buffet was smaller than I expected, but hey, there is nothing wrong with a small selection, as long as they are done right. Sadly, they were not. I highly suspect that the sides are all either canned or frozen. They lacked flavor, and just didn't look or taste fresh, or feel that way on the palate. Salt and pepper can only take a dish so far...Which brings me to the chicken....Growing up in the South with a Grandmother whose fried chicken was her signature dish, my expectations for what makes good fried chicken are probably pretty high, but this chicken suffered from a lack of flavor, and I mean none. It could have used a little salt and pepper in the batter at least. It was nice and moist, tender and flaky, I will give them that, but I've tasted more flavorful chicken at gas station lunch counters in my hometown. I can remember leaving this restaurant with a special place in my heart for the host, who is so genuine in his hospitality and his talent for singing motown, but the predominate thought running through my mind all the way home was that I hope that people don't buy into the history and the media hype like I did and take that as a shining example of good southern comfort food. Yes, this was the best fried chicken and fried pork chops I have ever had! Chicken was crunchy but not hard and it was super juicy on the inside....even a breast piece. I loved the oldness of the inside of the building. The folks made us feel right at home (Mr. D even sany to us). Very nice wait staff...much better than some of the fancy restaurants I have been too. Fantastic fried chicken!! Wonderful day driving back roads to get to the best fried chicken you've ever had. Crispy outside, moist inside and very well seasoned. Great selection of veggies and a mediocre salad bar. The fried pork chop was better than the chicken. We had the cobbler with ice cream for dessert. Lots of great nicknacks to check out. The price was a little high for country buffet ($15.95 dessert is extra)but what else are you going to eat without driving to the next town. Four of us visited the Old Country Store today for the lunch buffet after a recommendation from a fellow RV person. We did not know what to expect, and had not read information or reviews before going. We found exactly what we were looking for in Mississippi, local food with local personality in a historic building. I honestly would not give the food five stars, but I would give Arthur five stars. I can't believe Mr. D could possibly be singing the praises of the cornbread we had last Saturday. Surely that's not what his grandmother intended to happen to her recipe. Wonderful trip back in time. This restaurant is set in an 1800's General Store. The Owner Mr. D is amazing and personally greets and visits each table. He advertises his Fried Chicken as the best on earth and I can say if there is a better homeade crispy, crunchy fried chicken, I haven't had it yet. The price of $12.50 included a drink, salad bar and all you can eat buffet bar. Besides the great chicken, the bar included smoked ribs, fried pork chops, stewed chicken with rice, sweet potatoes, greens, purple hull peas, cornbread dressing and more. Everything was fantastic. We(4 of us) walked in and were told to sit anywhere we liked. The two waiters were very friendly. We thought that it was over priced(15.95) for lunch and should have left at that point. The biggest problem we had was, ALL of the tables had dirty, greasy, white table cloths. We asked for a clean one and the waiter acted like he didn't know what I was talking about. We finally found a table that was usable. The buffet was more like what you would see at the corner store. The salad bar was lettuce a few dressings and toppings. The vegetables seemed to be all premade. Now as far as the chicken, it was fried with a light crust, seasoned well. But I must say I have had better chicken. The ham steaks had been under the lights for a while because they had a white tint to them instead of a nice pink color. The appearance of the inside was surrounded with old business cards stapled to the store shelves. A few antiques not much memorabilia. As a whole it was ok but we won't be returning. read more

Well worth the 30 mile drive from Vicksburg MS on Highway 61. The age old building walls are lined with miscellaneous antiques and treasures that are for sale. The center of the building is filled with tables and chairs for diners to enjoy the delicious southern buffet. Fried chicken is better than any I've ever eaten. And the sides are equally delicious!
