We got this as part of our trolley tour and frankly we weren't sure we would go - seemed a bit corny. We decided on the 2nd day just to do it and I'm glad we did. Jack was our tour guide and while he did the typical "stk" I'm sure he is supposed to say - he also made it very interesting and real as he described what the prisoners went through. I never thought about woman prisoners ... shudder... We were glad we went on the tour and recommend Jack as the guide. read more

Interesting I guess but I think it was too much for my kids. The hanging and killing info was a bit much. Our guide was a bit stiff and you could not always here him or understand him. Wish we had a different guide. Anyway, the feel of the jail was oppressive and sad but interesting also. read more

Deputy Jim was a great tour guide. He answered all questions and gave great info. The tour lasted about 45 minutes. He takes you around the outside and inside the jail, and explains the lives of the prisoners and the sheriff. He stays in character the entire time. It's pretty cool. You find out at the end what this jail has in common with Alcatraz. This tour is great for families or just adults. It'll keep you interested the entire time! And it's just steps away from the other attractions of the old town, and down the street from the Fountain of Youth. read more

Our tour guide at the Old Jail, Ungrie, was fantastic. He looked and played the part of a prison inmate taking us on a tour so well that hours later I was still trying to convince the kids in the group that he was only an actor. They still think I'm wrong. So ask for Ungrie if you can. This tour was surprisingly fun. The whole area screams tourist trap when you arrive, but the jail is a bit of interesting history and the tour is a lot of fun. The tour took us about 45 minutes. This is a short guided tour. Our guide was very comical and played the part well. While it's only $10 to get in, the area houses some other small museums, which are not included in that price. It was fun and interesting, but I wouldn't put it on my bucket list. read more

We enjoyed learning about the jail and life for the inmates. Our tour guide played the part of a prisoner. She really committed but it was sort of an awkward performance with a fake accent. She did know a lot of history though. read more

The Old Jail is a must see if you come to St. Augustine. From what I could see the tour guides are very good and really know what they are talking about, especially Jack. My family and I went during the day, but I'm sure it is better at night (because it would be more dark and scary). Your guide takes you to several different places throughout the Jail. For example, solitary confinement, kitchen, jail cells, etc. Either before or after your are finished inside the jail, definitely check out the gift shop (lots of cool souvenirs). Once again, I would definitely recommend coming by the Old Jail during your time in St. Augustine. read more

The old jail was a pretty interesting stop. Our tour guide/inmate was Cleetus. They give the kids old jail sheriff's badges, which was cute. Cleetus told a lot of very interesting stories about the building, and the sheriff. I probably could have listened to him for quite a bit longer had my daughter not gotten a bit restless during the tour. Unfortunately, the exterior of the building was completely surrounded by scaffolding for a restoration. I would recommend this place over some of the other minor attractions in the area. read more

The Old Jail Museum clam to be the oldest jail in the United States, not sure how true that is but it doesn't matter. It looks like a tourist trap but it far from it. It's a real part of American history. Lots of exhibits to check out. The tour guides fill you in on the history. Huge display of old firearms. I spend a few hours checking everything out. It worth a stop in my opinion. read more

Our tour at the Old Jail with Bobalew was very informative and entertaining for my kids (ages 7 & 10). My son visited the Old Jail back in February with his class and had a different guide and said that he learned a few new things this time around, I think it's great that the guides can go "off script" and add their own personal touches to the information. Since the onset of Covid-19, the group sizes are limited to 15 and masks are required. I would recommend this tour for anyone who is interested in FL history. read more

My experience in here is just ok because I came here for a tour on a weekend so it is packed with tourist and the groups in the tour are bigger plus it is the busiest time of the day which is noon. The tour guide we have talks with a very strong southern accent and its hard to understand what he was saying and also talks very fast. Since we are in a very large group maybe 40 people, there are a lot distractions like kids talking and whining and there is not a lot of interactions from the tour guide who was just story telling about facts from each area. After I got home, I watched a youtube video from the jail tour and it feels like a totally different experience because the lady in the video who was doing the tour talks very clearly and entertaining. She also only got a small group about 15 so she interacts a lot with the visitors plus it is not so crowded when we get in tight spaces of the building like the kitchen. Is it a bad experience? Not really but could have been a blast if we got a good tour guide with less people in the group. read more

I came here during a weekend trip to St Augustine with my fiance. We explored the entire downtown and this was one of our top rated stops. From the way they dress to the way they talk, the cast members really get into character and make the visitors feel like inmates. The decor around the jail really makes it feel "real". The tour of the jail was great. We got to see everything from the maximum security cells, the kitchen and the sheriffs office. The tour guide was very informative and gave such a great explanation of what life was like for the prisoners. I am in a wheelchair, so unfortunately we did not get to explore the upstairs portion of the jail, and thats why I rated it as a 4 star experience. I know its kinda something thats out of thier control since ADA accessibility was not a thing back then. Great experience, and yes, I'd recommend it! read more

Who was the target audience for this? It was a little too gruesome for younger kids, and way too hokey (bordering on patronizing) for teens and adults. Maybe the tour guide was just bad, but it really was a waste of time. It has potential, and if you REALLY love old jails it's cool, but over all: skip it and do something else. read more

Visited the Old Jail as the first stop on our trip to St. Augustine. We went on one of the first tours of the day and lucked out to not only have a very small group, but we had Ian as our tour guide! Felt like our own private tour and Ian was a great tour guide, very funny and personable! I would recommend this to anyone who plans on visiting St. Augustine, but try to get there early if going on a weekend it's gets busy quickly and if Ian is working try to get him as your tour guide! read more

A fun and interesting tour, kind of chilling actually. But take note, the person who gives the tour is in character as a jailer, and I mean in deep, like the characters at theme parks. So it's not your usual dry q&a history tour. I think most folks will like this style better. read more

I just adore this place. I think that this place is a must see on your tour of St. Augustine. The fact that the Sherriff and his family lived here was way cool. This is the way jails should be run! Small rooms, sleeping on wooden beds with no pillows, working 12 hours a day, eating beans for meals. It is neat to see the way we used to treat prisoners. Lots of interesting facts. Worth the stop. read more

Decent place to tour even if deputy Jim went to Marshall. I hate Marshall and frankly don't like JIm but the tour was good and he really stayed in character even when dishing WVU digs. My only complaint is it is kind of pricey but we had a private tour and it was enjoyable even though Deputy Jim went to Marshall. read more

I came here a few months ago! We decided to check out the old jail tour. This was pretty interesting and had a lot of educational things about st augustine which was great! Also the tour guide was super funny and nice! He also role played acting like we were back in the day which was funny! I would recommend this for the older crowd not something for your kids. Tends to get kinda boring after awhile and lasts about 25 min. read more

It's a little hokey but still interesting and worth the tour! It has an interesting history, and you can go into the actual cells. They also have handguns that were used in crimes. It all gives an interesting behind the scenes look into jails and incarceration. read more
