Another amazing book store! Imagine being transported into Belle's library in Beauty and the Beast. From the outside it looks tiny but when you get inside it's crazy huge. Just like a book don't judge it from the cover! They had millions of titles stretching across every single subject you could think of and about a hundred you never thought of it. You must see it for yourself! This bookstore is truly a one-of-a-kind. My partner and I are avid readers, and in this bookstore we found multiple collections that we had been scouring the internet and eBay in search of for months. Not only were all the books of the collection all together, but they were so reasonably priced. Past the collections, we found so many books that couldn't have been purchased elsewhere. What a brilliant preservation of history this place is. The owners were such kind souls and incredibly knowledgeable. It's incredible what they've been able to build within those walls. My partner and I spent 4 blissful hours in the store, and we're eager to return. read more

This is truly a hidden gem! We drove two hours from southern Maine and were not disappointed. We did not end up finding anything that we wanted this time around, but definitely we will stop again at some point! This shop is PACKED with two levels of books, books, and more books! Rooms are lined with them, in every subject there is. The owners also owned the shop in Northwood which has unfortunately closed. This shop is wonderful and the owners are so friendly! My dad asked them where some subjects were and they led him right to them. In a large shop like this, they are super knowledgeable about where things are. Open 9-5 on certain days, you'll end up spending an hour or two or more looking through the stacks! It's definitely worth a visit! Prices are also fair. read more

Amazing gem of used book stores in the midst of New Hampshire. You can find books on pretty much anything (unless you're searching for books on Rene Magritte :). Two floors filled with tomes and tomes. Very nice organization, comprehensive sections, some are sorted alphabetically. Make sure to schedule for an extra hour or so: if you like books you'll get stuck there going through shelves choosing what to buy. Prices are fair for most cases (found few unreasonably expensive items). Very important: this store takes cards, so don't be worried that you don't have enough cash for all those books you want to buy. If you are in the area make sure to checkout another bookstore nearby: Books by the Lake. It's only 10 minutes away and also have a nice collection. read more

I went here with no real goal in mind, just to browse an old bookstore with no specifics. Boy, did I pick the right place to go to. I spent maybe an hour, two hours in here just browsing. As an American History major, with a specialty in social history, I was not disappointed. I wandered into the literature section and glanced under the "S"s, just to see if my favorite muckraker was there, and Mr. Sinclair was. But here's my favorite part of my entire trip. I now have two first edition Upton Sinclair novels from the 1920s. These are now my absolute prized possessions and I got them for a bargain because I wanted to go to a random old bookstore. I'm planning on taking my boyfriend this upcoming weekend for his birthday, as we are both huge bookworms. read more

This book shop has a huge selection of used books, arranged by topic. The main floor is jam-packed with all sort of volumes: fiction, classics, beautiful tooled ornamental vintage books, sets, poetry, cooking, children's books, and so forth. The upper floor has higher ceilings and the books are packed to them! This floor is nonfiction, mostly history of all types, and has smaller rooms full of engineering, science, radio, and so forth. There are chairs to read in, and some kids' toys to keep them entertained. I also found a small stack of graphic novels which was awesome! I wish they had a whole section of those, though I know they sell fast. It was strange to just find them in a pile instead of on a shelf someplace. The owner was very helpful and friendly, while letting visitors explore at their own pace. There is a friendly cat in residence, so keep in mind that you may want to take allergy meds if that's useful for you. Books are moderately priced - they are relatively expensive for things like first editions, though most books are in the $10 range that I found, so still quite affordable. Come with an idea of subject areas in mind, not particular books, and you'll leave with a few (or a lot!) more treasures! read more

Stopped here on a whim on our way back from the White Mountains. It was a little out of the way so I wasn't sure but I'm so glad we did! Another reviewer wasn't exaggerating when they called this a "mecca." Just imagine a labyrinth of floor-to-ceiling old dusty books, just asking to be dug through. And then realizing there is a whole second floor that also needs exploring! Very friendly staff, helped me find a section of books that would have otherwise taken me (literally) hours to find. I will definitely be back, and this might be a new regular part of my white mountain trips. HIGHLY recommend One caveat: It's a bit tricky to find, and except for the sign by the road you would never know this white house is a bookstore. Park in the driveway and store entry is located at the back end of the driveway. read more

I was lucky to have grown up in the small, sweet town of Henniker- even luckier was the fact I could ride my bike to this literary treasure-trove. I could never add up the hours I spent search through endless shelves or tucked away in an upstairs corner chair, drunk from the bibliosmia saturating my secret little existence. The genres are well labeled and plentiful and the owners are always very kind and helpful. It was 30 years ago when I first visited Old Number Six, and now, years, miles, and 3 children later, this beautiful book barn faithfully calls out to me each time I arrive in town for a visit. This has become one of our family staples, with each of us leaving with at least one book, but sincerely, getting turned about in the twisting halls with my children is so much more gratifying; more memories made. Do yourself a favor and start some memories with Old Number Six. If you love books, the quiet, and creaky old barns, you won't want to leave! read more

One of my favorite book stores ever! The atmosphere is fun...so much to look at and easy to get lost in huge stacks of books. I'm not kidding when I say it probably has more books than I've ever seen anywhere in my life. The couple that owns is are friendly and helpful. Very neat book store that reminded me of--I am a bit embarrassed to admit to be familiar with--Ollivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 B.C. in Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter books. Open all year-round, student discounts, with friendly and helpful staff. Plus a quite adequate philosophy section! Many of the classics are there, and then some. An absolute mecca, perhaps the king (queen?) of New England used book stores. Tons of book about everything - and "everything" includes some fairly esoteric academic subjects. Finer-grained that your typical college major - for instance, sections for different types of business, not just "Business" or "Economics". The setting is pure New England - up the hill from downtown Henniker, which even has a college. Wish I could have recommend a lunch spot, but have never stopped in town. Next time... Inside, you'll wind your way through an old farmhouse. Sometimes the books fill cul-de-sac rooms; sometimes they're on shelves erected in larger rooms, and sometimes they just line the hallways. Be sure to do some exploring as it's easy to miss large chunks of the house. In particular, the upstairs has a great selection of US state/region-specific books. The owners share responsibility for this shop and Northwood Used Books, which they also own. Nice folks. Pick up a flyer for the NH Used Booksellers Guild - some of the shops are small or rarely open, but others are worth a visit. read more

Yes, the bookstore is quite a wonderful surprise. It is far more than you would ever expect looking at it from the roadside. A really good place to grab a lunch is right at the intersection of rt 202 - it's called the Country Sprit. Nice atmosphere, good food and good prices. Both are really well worth the stop in Henniker. On the way between the bookstore and the Spriit, don't miss the wooden covered bridge over the contookook river. lovely cat friend Jesse helped me pick out of few goodies. The wonderful man behind the counter (don't know your name, but if you are single, give me a call!)... walked me to the children's books. He was knowledgable and also so polite. No you can't ask for a specific book. Yes you are paying the correct price, but the books are often covered in a protective archival cover and I found a vintage children's book in almost perfect condition. It's a fabulous mix of NEW titles, and everything in between. I can't wait to return (not just for the nice person behind the counter), because I could not even get through 1/10th of the place. Also Jesse the cat, has the person that works there very well trained (in and out and in and out). Plus, talking to the cat is a sign you are a good person. read more
