Great place that I went to in order to get my eye brows waxed. I didn't have an appointment and just showed up for a walk-in and they helped me almost immediately. The woman that waxed my eye brows definitely knew what she was doing as well. She saw there were some poorly managed spots on my eye brows upon first glance and adjusted what she did to make them look good. All in all I would definitely go back to the place. Sadly, I am not a resident here in Alexandria and was just visiting friends. If I am back in the area though I will definitely be making a stop. read more

This place doesnt even worth one star. I am very sorry that I'm leaving a bad review but I feel like I need to warn the others to avoid this place at all cost. June 6. My fingers was beautiful with polygel from other place, had them for almost 5 weeks. Still beautiful, strong, no scratch. June 7. Exactly a week ago, I lightly broke my index finger nail, the nail was still intact. Called this salon for same-day appointment for nail repair, gel manicure & design, but she said no availability so they gave me an appointment for June 8 at 2pm. I agreed. 5 minutes after, the salon called and said they could take me at 11am, June 7. I thought oh wonderful. I got there 11:05, told her i want nail repair, gel manicure & red french tip. At first it went well the woman was nice, we talked. She saw the broken nail and said that we can just glue that together and put something on top, i said okay. Then I started realizing that she did everything in a rush, then the problem started when she was filing my nails in such a rush that she totally forgot about my index nail and she just ripped the nail from my finger. She ripped it in a split second when i had been very careful with it the whole day! I was shocked she was too, she said sorry and brushed it off like "well putting glue will never work anyway for something that deep". Yeah right. 11:30ish someone walked in to the salon and she said that it's her next client. I'm no expert but i know for a fact theres no way what i need can be fulfilled within 30 minutes??? That explains why shes rushing everything. Then she tried to put an extension on my nail, which failed twice, it kept falling, and she didnt notice until i told her because she was so nervous and distracted with the other client waiting. Once the extension "worked", turned out there was a hole in there!! She hesitantly fixed it, and then let the other client in and seated next to me. Goodness the whole time she was looking at me and i felt so so bad for the next client having to wait this long for her appointment - which isnt my fault or hers. Then she said that "i cant finish the job i cant make the design im late for my next appointment" (ofc!! by now it was almost 12:30), then she said she'll do one color (red) for everything and 2 free designs on my ring fingers. I didnt want all red for my nails, so i asked for different color which was jelly-nude gel polish. She gave me 2 super thin layers, and it looked like it had nothing at all and she said it was "very natural". She asked are you happy with this, and i can only smile what else can i do? Create a scene? With the next client next to me? No, so i just said yes and wanna get out of the place as soon as possible, i paid well gave tip i wasnt rude and kept smiling. June 9, two days after, the index nail extension broke. I knew this would happen because I could feel that it wasn't even strong to begin with. But I didn't know that it was gonna be this quick. At that time I was still "whatever" because it was an extension anyway. Husband said keep the nail in case i want to complain. June 11, my thumb gel cracked. I still think it's a coincidence. June 14, today, my middle finger gel chipped. Seriously??? So after days of my husband convincing me that complainng about this is within my rights and i'm not being mean, i am writing this review today. For the business, please do not double book people. Thanks for squeezing me into your time but not like this. It made me so uncomfortable, and judging from the next client's face, she was obviously pissed. Your service was bad, my nails are more broken than ever and now i have to go somewhere else to fix everhthing i came to you to do. I'm all for supporting POC & women-owned businesses but this isn't how. 30 minutes isn't even enough for a manicure, let alone mani + repair + design. You know this, Youre the professional. For other customers reading this, if paying more is within your budget, go somewhere else. More expensive is so much better than low cost but very bad service and quality. I went here because it was cheaper and my trusted nail person is in Gaithersburg. I just moved to Alx and looking for a new salon to go, i guess i wont be coming to this one. I've been going to Ashley (new nail Technician at Old Town Salon and Spa) for one year and I followed her from the previous salon. She's the most talented and skilled nail technician I've ever had and is very attentive to her customers needs. She's always up-to-date on the latest trends, and she's always able to give me the exact look I'm going for. Ashley is also incredibly meticulous and detail-oriented. She takes her time to make sure that my nails are perfect, and she always goes above and beyond to make sure that I'm happy with the results. In addition to being a great nail technician, Ashley is also a wonderful person. She's always friendly and welcoming, and she makes every appointment feel like a treat. My mom and I have been getting our hair cuts and eyebrows threaded by Sophea for over 15 years!!! Long time clients, we don't trust anyone else to touch our hair or eyebrows. Not only is she talented, but she is kind and treats us wonderfully. We've recently gotten our hair colored for the first time by her, so we've been frequenting the salon a bit more now. I've been going to Old Town Salon for my brows for over a year now and I have no idea why it's taken me so long to review them. Well, as you can tell by the 5 stars I am very happy with OTS. Sophie is my one and ONLY person for brows. I had one other tech do my brows once and I had to fuss over better shaping and cleaning up sparse hairs. I don't like to have to direct my brow person or anyone doing any kind of servicing on my person (haha..easy there ;) Anyway, Sophie is quick but meticulous. Sign of an expert threader. Yes, I said "threader." If you haven't had threading for your brows, it's really not that bad. I was an avid brow waxer because I love the clean line and how quick it is. However, waxing is not for everyone. It's abrasive on the skin and several people I know have complained about their brow hair not growing back anymore. That would be great I guess if you had the shape you wanted forever but i'm sure we like to know that our hair can grow back if we want to. Sophie's process: 1) baby powder on both brows (to get rid of excess oil and/or sweat); 2) you hold the skin around your brows taut by putting one hand right above brows and one on your lid (every threader i've ever been to does this, and it just makes sense...so don't get all "why i gotta do work for my service?" not.that.serious); 3) she threads below first, cleaning up new growth and shaping if necessary; 4) goes above the brows and cleans almost all the way up to your hair line (as in, close to the hair on your head; to really clean you up and make those brows POP! what wax artist does that? not many); 5) takes little scissors to cut down longer hairs; and 6) sometimes, if needed, will pluck any random hairs, so as to not keep threading the same areas. Result? Fantastic, clean, well-shaped brows and your skin is still the same color as when you first walked in. #winning The salon offers hair and nail services for both men and women but I've never had any of those services. I wanted to believe as the reviews were good for this establishment. Firstly, for a salon, thee was no hospitality when you just entered, just a "have a seat". No drinks are offered, and when I asked for water, I was given water in a cup small enough for mouthwash-the kind used for dentists offices. My haircut was unfortunately awful. I asked for hair to be kept longer above my ears but it was gone in two cuts. I went home after the cut and buzzed my head to make the length uniform. No wash, shampoo, product and finally no blow dry aside form the end when the cut hair was blown off my head. This place needs serious help-both in the areas of hospitality as well as listening comprehension. read more

Walked by here several times, and saw they offer threading. I confess I was a bit wary initially as they seem (at least from the outside) to be primarily a hair salon, but after reading up on Sophia (sp?) I decided to try them out. The reviews on threading for this place are on the money. I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to grow in and thicken my brows for about a year. Sophia understood exactly what I wanted. She also has a great eye for shape. She left a small row of new hairs under my browline to let the shape grow back in, while cleaning up the rest and crafting a much better shape. I go back and forth between a little underwhelmed and happy for what I got. I don't have the thickest eyebrows but they looked great after threading. A1 threading.....4.5 stars for that. 3 stars for the tinting. If I could combine right now 3.5. Sophia/Sophie worked on me. The tinting is what I feel kind of meh about...it was not left on very long at all. 1 day later it's already fading a little bit and i've been careful to do as instructed by not washing my eyebrows hard or letting a lot of soap get near them (even rinsed my face with lukewarm/almost cold water). I have combination skin where I get oily in my t-zone (including eyebrow area) but for $15 for a temporary tint I expect AT LEAST 1 week (I was told some clients only need to come in 4-6 wks for touch-up). I don't know if what's left will make it to next Friday coming up. I feel like she probably should've let it on a bit longer. It was applied to my brows and sat maybe 5 minutes. I do want to try the tinting out again but I will request if she can leave the dye on a little longer if that's possible (and safe to do). She mentioned usually doing the tinting on fairer skinned people or folks with lighter eyebrow hair. The color she used was great though (it was like an off-black/darkest brown shade) but given that I'm a brown-skinned woman (maybe a touch darker than Queen Latifah for reference) it's possible it would need to stay on my brows a little longer to take a lot better. I definitely will update after a 2nd visit (next visit i'll also be sure to remember her name correctly lol). I will return before I go out of town for my birthday near-ish the end of this month (a little shy of 3 weeks). read more

The first time I came, I got a great hair cut and eyebrow waxing. I didn't have an appointment, but they welcomed me in and took care of me as soon as they could. I made the mistake of trusting this place after my first impression... :( I came back a couple months after for another eyebrow waxing and had been lectured about even choosing waxing over threading. Being so uncomfortable, I conceded and allowed them to thread my upper lip. It was painful! I knew what it felt like, I'd done it before...I finally had enough and told them I needed my eyebrows waxed. During the waxing, the lady spilled the wax on my shirt...!!! She then wiped it with the oil, which left a huge oil stain to be forever on my shirt. It was one of my new shirts!!! :( I will never come back here...It's affordable, but I don't need a lecture on the best way to shape my eyebrows nor another shirt ruined by some careless lady with hot wax. read more

Location is good b/c you can always find parking. I was looking for a threading spot since I moved here recently from Philly. I've had two separate people thread my eyebrows and both times I had a good experience. They are quick and friendly. I am not crazy about paying $12 b/c I normally pay $3 but, I know that is a steal that I won't find anywhere else except Philly or NY. Also, I had my upper lip threaded for the first time and though it's slightly painful, it wasn't horrible. They are pretty clean. And the hours are very convinient. read more

A woman walked in after me and didn't have an appointment; she was turned away kindly. She declined the offer to make an appointment. After reading the reviews and checking out the prices I thought I'd give it a shot. The others are right - make sure you ask for Sophia! She did my eyebrows the first time and they looked great. So the second time I made an appointment for a cut and eyebrow thread, and I don't know who it was, but she was awful! She was nice, tried to converse with me, but she had no cutting or threading skills! I asked her to do layers and she basically cut my hair into "steps" and did not blend the layers into each other. Also I had her cut bangs and they were totally crooked! I didn't notice until I got home and by that time I was so upset that I didn't want to drive back down there. And the threading made my eyebrows look terrible. The third time I went back, I specifically asked for Sophia to do my eyebrows again, but this time was different. She did an alright job, but had a snotty attitude the whole time. I don't know, reminded me of nail shop girls that talk trash in another language. The pluses is that they are relatively inexpensive for the Old Town area, yet they're inconsistent in services, so it's up to you. The parking is good, but make sure you make an appointment because although it says walk-ins are welcome, they're not. Honestly, if you need threading, I think you're better off going to the mall where they do it great every time and it's only $10. read more

It was a good experience. Came in from out of town, they weren't busy so they were able to accommodate my schedule. I had my brows threaded, she was very attentive and did them nicely. I would have liked them to be a little cleaner and the shape wasn't as defined as I had hoped it would be and how I'm used to. But she did do a nice job. If I'm ever in the neighborhood again, I wouldn't mind using their services once more. She took my greying, frizzy locks, and turned them into a sophisticated, smooth, work-ready, strawberry blonde style. She listened to my desire to keep my hair long and worked with me, so I learned how to style it at home. You won't get mall booth threading here! They create sharp smooth lines for brows, and the hair stays off so much longer than waxing. They have now added gel nails to their repertoire. I can attest that they last. I've tried to come here many times, but I've only had my eyebrows threaded once. She did a good job, nothing out of the ordinary. There are usually only one or two ladies working and when I've tried to call to see if I could "walk in" while I was shopping in the area, I was frequently told I couldn't be seen until 4+ hrs later because of hair appts. (This has been weekdays during the day, trying to work around my daughter's naps.) So I had an appointment with Sophia today, but when I got there she was busy cutting some cute kiddies hair. So I let Sophia talk me into letting the other lady do my eyebrow threading. OMG, biggest freaking mistake I ever made! One eyebrow is longer and thicker than the other, and I have 5-7 spot where she ripped my skin off. I've had threading before and this was the worst experience. It was painful, and the lady barely spoke English, I am such a fool for sitting there and letting a total stranger disrespect my eyebrows in such a way. NEVER AGAIN!! read more

Not only is she a great hair cutter, but she's amazing when it come to her coloring and highlighting skills. And while she's always tactful and respectful, if she doesn't think a cut or color is going to be flattering, she will discuss it with you and share her opinion - which is something I really appreciate. I went here to get an eyebrows and upper lip wax. Instead of offering a choice between waxing and threading the technician automatically started threading. The threading was extremely painful and the technician ended up cutting me with the thread. No antiseptic was applied to the cut just baby powder. Also, my eyebrows are overly arched, it looks like I'm always surprised. So I demanded that she wax my upper lip instead of threading it. The technician used COLD WAX. When the hair didn't come off (duh COLD WAX) she re-waxed the same area. This of course caused a burn (it sort looks like a carpet burn). Now I'm walking around here with a bloody, maybe infected eyelid and a burned upper lip. I would recommend this place, only if you were my worst enemy. For the rest of you save your money and go else where. read more

I've been going to see Sophia since she moved to our neighborhood and I couldn't be more delighted by my experience with her and her staff. They regularly cut my hair and occasionally tread my eyebrows. I've also had several manicures and pedicures. Recently she expanded the shop to include facials. I have yet to try one...but soon! I especially like that she has off-street parking. The price is reasonable and the quality is exceptional. I'm hesitant about writing a review of the shop for fear I can't get in at the last minute like I am currently accustomed too. She is fabulous, her work is great, her staff is always friendly and able to get my brows done quickly without too much pain, (I'm a wimp). As a long time Hair Cuttery loyalist I expected more from a local salon that charged 5$ more per cut. I went there having the longest length hair Ive had in years and came home with shortest hair ive had in years. I hoped for something in the middle and had told the lady in the beginning "not to short." Whatever. Pressed for time and couldn't get to my usual threader. NEVER AGAIN. My eyebrows aren't even the same shape right now. I knew it was going badly when the girl couldn't even hold the thread properly. She broke it at least 5 times while working on one brow. The other esthetician had to take over in the middle of the job. That's how poorly she was doing them! I arrived at the salon with square brows in need of cleaning up. I left the salon with round brows that aren't even the same length. Thank God I know how to contour my own brows. I hate having to wear makeup everyday but its what I'll have to do for at least a month while these grow out. Note to the salon. If you're going to let someone in training work on me you should 1. Warn me beforehand so I have the option of proceeding or not and 2. Supervise her while she's doing them to prevent her from totally jacking someone's brows up. Ugh!! read more

I get my eyebrows threaded here, and I love it! Sofia is the best. She is fast and my brows always look fabulous. The other women also do a good job, but aren't as fast and sometimes not quite a thorough. They're all very nice, though, and remember me. They give you a card where you get a free brow threading after you pay for 10 (maybe it's 8?), and once I brought three friends in with me, and they gave me credits on my card for all four of us. So nice! They almost always have appointments the same day. I also walk-in fairly regularly, and have only had to wait 10-15 minutes when I do that. Had my brows done by Sophie. She listened, paid attention to what I wanted versus what I had to work with. I just moved to DC from Seattle and pretty much grew my eyebrows out because l just didnt trust anyone to do it. Well thanks to yelp, I found Sofia at Old town Salon. The services are always great and the staff is friendly and attentive. The MAJOR downside is the irregular nature of the hours. They aren't open Mondays (and Fridays, I think?), and they often open up to an hour late. Often don't answer their phones or respond to voicemails, which makes it difficult to get in sometimes. I once waited outside for 30 minutes after my appointment time for her to get there to open up shop. read more
