The idea was (and is) bringing community together through art and gardening. Octavia (the octopus) is loved by kids and adults alike. There's a little free library onsite too. This is a fantastic community urban garden growing veg to share with neighbors. It's also off the beaten path and mainly known to neighborhood folks. Activities looked fun for any age--a little free library, chalk and chalkboard, glittery octopus statue. I have not looked into the plant stuff yet but can already say I enjoy the park.

For $30 a growing season you get a  20'x20 plot. There's a tool shed with shared tools, and rain barrels. This is a great way to meet people in the neighborhood and also raise home grown vegetables. There are fences around the garden that mostly keep the deer out, but there are definitely rabbits in the garden, so most people put up some fencing.

Although no longer primarily a rose garden, they have preserved the beautiful trellises that were a distinctive feature of the garden. Ideal location for a reception or outdoor wedding. They help with utilities, referrals for jobs and other services. They could always use donations : food, clothing, and bags for food pantry and clothing (I donate paper and plastic bags). Absolutely incredible…read more I don't go to botanical gardens much so I don't really have qualifications to compare or rate any particular place but Phipps blew me away. I like plants. I have some. I thought seeing a bunch of plants might be fun but I wasn't expecting it to be such a wonderful experience! The place is quite large considering most of it is inside. It is organized for a few different environments and a little something for everyone depending on what your floral preferences might be. It took us about an hour and a half to go through the whole thing. Got a lot of pictures. Saw a lot of interesting and cool plants as well as beautiful flowers. Highly recommend this as a stop on any and every Pittsburgh trip.

Pgh Candle & Phipps partnered for an evening at Botany Hall…read more We selected our scented oils and were able to create our own soy candles. The vessel was a lovely shade of green and had some weight. Simple instructions for those of us who were not-crafty. While our candles were solidifying, we were able to go see the Spring show. Lovely evening. Definitely would do again.
