There are 4 Paul's Markets in Louisville, and I am fortunate to live very close to the Middletown location, which opened in 1996. Every summer the outdoor area is chock full of beautiful flowering plants, both annual and perennial varieties. The plants today were lush, healthy, and absolutely stunning. They were priced in line with the local nursery that we most frequent, which is a bit higher than the big box stores. However, as with most things, you get what you pay for. The grocery has a wonderful deli that includes a hot bar and a wide variety of prepared sandwiches, pastas dishes, salads, and deserts. The salad selection was extensive. I opted for a cobb salad that included chicken, bacon, egg, tomatoes, lettuce, blue cheese crumbles and dressing! It was a steal for only $6.99 and absolutely delicious. I chose the honey mustard dressing and it was a chef's kiss! Throughout the grocery area one will find a lot of specialty items such as several types of gluten-free breads, seasonal fruits, regional candies, and much, much more. Paul's is a great place to grab a lunch that is far healthier than the plethora of fast-food options for just a couple more dollars!

At Webb's you can get your dry goods, but otherwise it's a very pleasant departure from that model. First and foremost, there is the deli counter in back and the lunch patio. They serve both breakfast sandwiches as well as deli sandwiches. If you pick up your breakfast or lunch to-go, they make everything to order and it's always very quick. Deli smoked sausage sandwich? $2. Country fried steak sandwich? $3. Biscuits 69 cents. Hot wings, beans, chili, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, cornbread. Want a can of beer with your lunch? That's $1. Webb's is also reasonably stocked with decent produce, which is great since there is no supermarket in Phoenix Hill. So if you want to pick up a couple of tomatoes or onions or bell peppers, you generally can count on getting them here. Webb's received a federal grant to provide equipment and support to carrying healthy items as part of the city's "Healthy in a Hurry" program, and this is the result. (The last time I looked in the produce section, they did have a bunch of girl scout cookies stuffed in there as well, but hey, you need to wash down that lettuce with something, no?)

Still, even with chips and a drink, that's a five buck lunch. And where can you get that kind of a deal anymore?? I got a turkey sandwich, with american cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mustard on wheat bread. And I'll tell ya, its nothing sophisticated but it was pretty darn good. I would definitely come back - they had fried chicken and fried cod that looked delicious! Oh one other thing - Webb's does accept credit cards, but you need to have at least a ten dollar purchase, otherwise they add 25 cents onto your bill. Maybe you care about that, maybe not. I had to add to it to bring flavor to it and would recommend adding thicker slices of bread to it. The baked were good. Loved the variety of fruit options, frozen items, fresh meat, and other things to try out. Garden section - Didn't know this existed in here. A variety of plants and flowers to choose from. Customer service- It was top notch from the counter and front store cashiers. Everyone was nice and on point. They kept lines moving which I appreciated too. I found those, as well as a bounty of excellent looking produce and one of the largest collections of local goods and groceries I've seen. A clerk pointed me to their local chocolates and candies section, and I was able to get some bourbon balls and modjeskas -- dark chocolate modjeskas, in fact, a first for me. And during my short trip, I noticed several local brands represented, as well as great options for pre-made meals. I feel like Paul's would also be fun to shop at for a party. You could find lots of dips and other party foods to show off. A few years ago I also ordered some fruit baskets here for my kid's teachers. They were a hit, and it was nice to know that our class' money was going to a local business. I will definitely be back here!
