We have used Old Town veterinary hospital for years as our secondary clinic. When our primary vet changed locations about 2 years ago we started using Old Town as our primary vet. We loved Dr. Mayer however about 2 years she left to go to an emergency clinic. We started going to a male veterinarian at Old Town and he seemed to be cold and indifferent to our needs. We have had dogs for over 40 years. Many have had health issues and for the last 12 years have only adopted seniors. All of our dogs have had the best care bmno matter the costs. The male veterinarian always seemed to be cold, distance, and really not caring about our little Chihuahua or us. Recently Old Town veterinary hospital hired Dr. Reid who is absolutely wonderful. We love her. She is compassionate, listens to our concerns about our little 20 year old Chihuahua and truly cares. We are so happy! I wouldn't rate Old Town veterinary hospital a 5 with the other veterinarian but definitely with Dr.Reid. We are so happy she is there. read more

I am afraid I am going to lose my cat because of lack of concern from this place. Since April 27 I have had to make several visits since my cat got in a fight and had some wounds. As of today his leg is still so swollen it looks like it may burst. Jarvis was the one I saw the first time and she obviously missed an abscess on my cats neck and I ended up having to leave him a few days later to have a drain put in his neck. All the time he still has wounds on his foot and a swollen leg. The other times I saw Strickland. They say they were giving antibiotics but they werent helping and they offered no other alternative. The second time there he was so sick his temp was 105 and he was given antibiotics and the vet said take him home and bring him back the next day so he could put a drain in his neck. I asked him if my cat couldnt just stay the night. He hesitated then said ¨I guess we can put him in isolation so he wont stink the rest of the place up¨. This past Saturday I had to take him back and I asked the vet if he looked at the wound on his leg to see if maybe it was abcessing and causing the swelling. He told me he didnt because he hadn´t even taken him out of his carrier!!!!!! The reason for that was because he said they had large dogs back there. Why the hell is my cat back in the area with large dogs and if you arent even going to look at him why should I bring him in? Anyhow more antibiotics and my cat is still very sick not to mention the hundreds of dollars I have paid to them!! I am so afraid he is not going to make it. I can barely get him to get up and I am hand feeding him. read more

I have been a long time patient at Yadkin Veterinary Hospital, but due to the long drive and lack of availability, we decided to try Oldtown and have been very satisfied! Dr. Jarvis saw our cat, Bert, in an emergency when he had to have a tooth extracted. We felt that in the emergency situation the price was very reasonable and they were able to fix the issue quickly and we've had no further problems! Most recently we took a stray cat that showed up at our house to get a check up, and I was very impressed. Emma was the tech who took care of us and she had a great bedside manner. Very sweet and down to earth. We really enjoyed her! We had also been to Dr. Eads at Shallowford Animal Hospital previously and I felt that he REALLY upcharged me for unnecessary things (a senior panel for my 3 year old cat, landing a routine check up at about $700) so I was afraid of that here, especially because the stray had no medical history. A full vaccination and checkup was about $160 which I find to be very reasonable. They also provided an estimate for a spay/neuter, which I appreciate and was also very reasonable. Dr. Meyer came in to give us the report after his examination and she was very kind, explained everything well, as well as answering any questions/concerns we had. I felt very satisfied that they were thorough in their assessment of our cat. The facility was very clean. At the time of this review (1/15/21) they are asking patients to wait outside in their cars until their room is available. We only waited about 5 minutes and we were allowed to come into the room (masks are required in the building!). They do the exams in the back, but it was very fast. read more

Beware. They will try to strong arm you into unnecessary testing. This was for my dog who had a negative heart worm test and prescribed meds 12 months ago, and his vet appointment was 12 months since his last one, yet they are requiring another test to continue his meds. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Jarvis. I credit her with saving my 14-year-old dog's life. When he suddenly developed heart issues, Dr. Jarvis worked with him all day to find a treatment that would work for him. My once lethargic dog now has a bounce to his walk, a constant wagging tail and a huge appetite! Dr. Jarvis is always there when I have questions and I will not take my fur babies to anyone else!! read more

The good - the support staff are kind and efficient. Dr. Strickland is compassionate and he charges appropriately for his services. The bad - Dr. Jarvis lacks warmth. Her bedside manner is cold at best. She up charges at every opportunity. I was given a quote of $550 to have my healthy 15 pound dog's teeth cleaned. Covid happened; With in a few months my dog broke a tooth and needed the cleaning plus an extraction. Dr Jarvis charged $794 for this procedure including $72 for labs that were drawn just a few months before and were completely normal. It wouldn't cost $72 for a basic metabolic panel at lab corp for myself (cash price) and $244 to have ONE tooth pulled!?!? I consider these up charges emotional blackmail. Get established with a reputable vet that will not extort unnecessary charges from you when you need surgical care. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I called at 8:30am on Friday, 4/29. I don't know who I spoke to, but I explained my dog hadn't eaten in a few days and that Friday was the first day he refused his meds. I said I'm a new patient, the lady said that's fine, there will be a $60 sick visit fee. I said I'll be on my way & she asked that my regular vet send over my dog's records. I told her, "sure. That'll be sent before I arrive." I called my vet, gave them Old Town's info, & my vet said she would send it over. I called Old Town around 10am & told them I was en route. I arrived & told the lady at the front that I was the new patient who called twice this AM. She was so confused and kept asking if I was an existing patient. I said, "no. I called at 8:30am & described the situation. Then, I called 15 minutes ago to let you know I'm on my way." She said, "you probably called Reynolda down the road." I said, "no. I called OldTown." I showed her my phone call log with the time stamp & she said, "oh, that's weird. I wonder who was working at that time" (I later found out my vet did call OldTown & attempted to send over records, but was told OldTown didn't have us in their system, so OldTown told my vet to not send over records.) I emailed a copy of my dog's records to OldTown (obtained from my vet.) Few minutes later, my dog and I went into one of the exam rooms. Emma, the vet assistant, attended to us first. I explained what was going on. Emma took notes, then left. Then, Dr. Meyer spoke w/ me. I restated everything I told Emma. Then, Dr. Meyer took my dog to the back and ran tests. She told me the results and her diagnosis. Even though the blood tests were w/n normal range, she wanted to do a chest x-Ray to find out more about my dog's potential heart murmur. (I took my dog to his vet every 6 months. We saw our family vet in February. I have NEVER been told in the almost 14 years I had my dog that he had a heart murmur.) Dr. Meyer did the x-Ray, came back with my dog & talked about the rx he needed. My dog was getting weak, & couldn't get up to go to the back for the IV. So, Emma brought the IV to the room & administered it there. I paid almost $750 for the visit, testing, & rx. I never once got a copy of X-ray images nor blood labs. I brought my dog home, & everything went downhill. My dog still refused to eat his food. I emailed OldTown an update on Friday evening. Never got a response. Later, my dog had diarrhea. I gave him his rx as directed. again early Saturday AM, he had diarrhea. After that, he was unable to walk or stand. I thought that was due to extreme lethargy induced by the heart rx. I gave him his rx again that AM per Dr. Meyer. I called OldTown Saturday AM to tell them my dog still isn't feeling better. It was a 15 min call, 10 mins of which I was on hold. I was told if my dog worsens, go to the ER vet. The lady I spoke to even stated she talked to the vet on duty, who reviewed my dog's file & explicitly stated, "Even if you brought your dog in to us, there's nothing different that I would do." I felt slightly relieved b/c she also stated that I need to give the rx time to work. Later that evening, my dog's heart rate slowed, but I erroneously assumed that was due to his heart rx working to make his heart rate regular. Much to my surprise, he passed early Sunday AM. This was completely unexpected. He should not have died. He was a VERY healthy dog (his labs from Friday even confirmed that!) I spent $750 for him to live just over 36 hours. My dog didn't pee since Friday AM. I don't know if it was a bad IV drip and/or the new rx that ultimately led to his demise. My dog has previously been on an IV drip, got antibiotics and an appetite stimulant (as recently, as end of last year). My dog never once became as immobile as he did here. I emailed OldTown on Sunday AM to let them know he passed. I have 30 days of meds sitting on my counter (close to $300). (I don't understand why generic meds were not offered.) I didn't get a response back until Tuesday AM via phone. (I was in a 7 h final exam when she called.) The message Sandy left me was that she was sorry, they are short staffed so that's why there was a delay, and for me to call her back. I did a few days later, and now, it's been 3 weeks, STILL awaiting a callback. I'm angered that my dog passed. Even if he had lived, I would not come back here. From the very beginning, there was total and utter disorganization. Even though I called 2x before bringing my dog, the receptionist still had no idea why I was there AND assumed I called the wrong vet. Also, I don't understand why I was never given a copy of my dog's x-ray imaging & blood lab results. Not responding to emails in a timely manner and leaving customers on hold for a very long time is disappointing. Businesses need to stop using COVID as an excuse for subpar customer service. All that to say, I will never bring a future dog here nor will I recommend this practice to my friends in the area. read more

They used to be great and reliable, but as of lately, the care is subpar. I took my dog to get groomed and they overdosed him. He ended up dying. Now the vet is refusing to give my the medical records of my dog that passed and of my current dog. All I wanted was my documentation and they are just making it the grieving process more difficult for me. read more

I like that they saw my dog in an emergency and the charges were reasonable. I didn't like the discussion of whether to fix my male or female dog. I told the vet my female might be pregnant. Her response was ...so? We can kill the puppies. Ummmmm...no! Not the level of caring or compassion I am looking for. The staff are always friendly, I get out in a room right away. The place is older you can tell it's been there a while, but they just did a remodel to freshen it up. I've seen two doctors and loved them both. I don't feel like they try to sell you their wares as most do- they just want to help your pet. You can donate old blankets here, if you have any laying around! They don't overcharge, which is nice. read more

Two years ago, I would have given this clinic 5 stars. But over the past 18-24 months, the decline in the care they show for their patients and the response to customers is shocking. The staff has become outright hateful, and the doctors make no efforts to find solutions for sick pets. They have not adapted well to the pandemic circumstances. Once the Paw Plan I paid for expired, I will find a new vet to care for my dog. Of the three most recent visits, my dog was groomed which left him with a deep cut on his leg, which they did not bother making me aware of. He was taken in for an ear infection, was not treated, had to go back again and pay for another visit to get the infection treated. Dr. Strickland then suggested that I start my dog on allergy medicine, which I have been ask for at annual check ups for YEARS and was told that my dog needed to continue Benadryl, and my requests were not charted. Disappointed that in such a short period of time this company has gone from a caring practice to a disassociated and hateful mess that I can no longer look to for the best interest of my dog. read more

I called this place because my dog had cut her leg open and was going to need stitches. I explained this to them and asked if I could bring her in, I was told to come. They came out and got her and then pretty soon the vet comes out with her still bleeding all over and tells me he doesn't have time to stitch her up today. WHAT. My dog is a very energetic dog.. He seems to be aggressive towards people. Dr.Jarvis Basically told me it was my fault because I need a professional trainer. She also mentioned it only being a 30 minute appointment. In other words she didn't have time for it. She said all of his behavior was normal Yet she still put a muzzle on him. LOL All could be true but my nerves were tore to pieces due to his demeanor towards the staff. Her demeanor towards me was very cold. They gave him a rabies shot when he already had one months before. I told them multiple times. If I'm being charged $150 I should at least receive some kind of hospitality. I tried to go into detail multiple times, she cut me off. Couldn't even get a wave goodbye. I left feeling belittled and disregarded. If you want your vet to care about your dog don't waste your time with old town vet. read more

On September 10th I called Oldtown Vet with an emergency. It was 5:11pm and I explained to them that I had found my pet in our fenced in backyard. She was lethargic and when I tried to get her to drink she just laid beside her bowl. I asked if they could see her knowing it was late and they told me to bring her on, after checking with the vet. On the way she perked up a bit. When I arrived approximately 5:30 PM the tech took her from me, I spoke with the Dr. Strickland who told me she had begun having seizures since we arrived and would need to be taken to the Emergency Animal Hospital. I understood her need for more comprehensive care, however when they brought her to me she was actively seizing. I handed her back to the tech saying I can't take her like this. It was apparent to me she had gotten much worse while we were there and she was not stable. I was told "we told you she was having seizures" Given the address of the Animal Hospital, told they were leaving and shown the door at 6:11PM. She died en route to the Animal Hospital and their attempts to do CPR failed. I will never know what occurred during the time we were at Oldtown Vet since they take your pet and do not allow anyone in the treatment area, but we immediately moved all our other pets to another vet where we can receive more humane care and treatment. read more

We moved to the area months ago and I was having a hard time finding a vet that I liked until a girl from my work told me about Oldtown. We just had our first visit a couple of days ago with our new puppy and they were great! Dr. Jarvis was very informative and she told us everything we needed to know as well as giving us folders with info about vaccines, their services and a little book about caring for your new puppy. Thank you Dr. Jarvis! This will be my née vet for sure. I will definitely recommend this place if anyone asks. read more

You will never find better care for your four-legged babies or more helpful, friendly staff. We have used them since 2007, even though we drive 50 minutes to get to them. When your baby is sick, the doctor calls to check up. they follow up on care and new treatments and they stay current with new practices. You could never do better than Oldtown! read more

The staff was friendly, however, it was very expensive and I don't feel they were very upfront about the charges. I asked how much a vaccination was and was told $24 but they didn't elaborate to let me know I would be paying that a second time, 3 weeks later. I also didn't as for an exam, they said they would be weighing my dog, took her to the back and came back a few minutes later. They then charged me $70 for an exam. I have never had a vet do an exam of my dog without me in the room, I don't even know what was examined. I was really disappointed. read more

Not only did Dr. Jarvis take all the time I needed (and I asked a lot of silly first-time-dog-owner questions!) she was pleasant and incredibly knowledgeable. She even called in the evening to check in and see if we had any questions. (No surgery, just a simple fecal sample test.) Our sweet rescue was in medical foster for months so I was very unsure about a lot of things. I must have called the front desk 5 times in as many days. The staff was always pleasant and patient. From the front desk staff to the doctors, Oldtown is wonderful. Never a problem making an appointment--they always manage to work around my crazy schedule and get me in when needed. They welcome you and your pet by name, the wait time is minimal, the techs treat your dogs as if they were their own, they get back so fast with test results, answer all questions, even those unrelated to the visit. When I adopted my third rescue, she suffered from severe anxiety and separation issues. Dr. Gates had so many suggestions to help me help my dog--she took time out of her day to call me after I had spoken to a tech about it. You can't ask for better care for your animals! read more
