I have had this spot on my list for years. Once the owners shut down Slamwich in Madison, I had to go out of my way to have one of their delicious sandwiches. Since I was in the area I decided to stop in and order pretty much one of each sandwich...I am exagerating but I am really not. I ordered the - Poppin Pastrami (just like I remember it - delicious!), BBQ brisket (yum), Philly (so good) and the Josephine (will definitely pass on this next time - disappointing). The staff is very friendly. great old general store feel. I was able to peruse around - they have prestocked items you can heat up at home and their sweets section (of course right near the register) looks amazing! Unfortunately, it's time to say goodbye to this place for me. I have been going to the store for many years and it is just not the same as it once was. This morning I called ahead to order my usual bacon, egg and cheese sandwich so that I could pick it up on the way to work. I walk in and there is one sandwich on the counter with the receipt that has my name on it. I pick it up to bring it to the cashier and I am immediately scolded by the cook who says "try not to pick up a sandwich that isn't yours". I told him "the sandwich has my name on it". He said "you wouldn't believe how many people make mistakes". I then walk it over to the cashier who appears to struggle with the English language. I don't understand a word that he is saying to me, I pay the $15.95 for my bacon egg and cheese and coffee. He does not say thank you or anything in return. They have just lost their small town feel. I will have to start getting breakfast in New York City, which will also be half the price somehow. I'm sure the owner of the store is a good local person that needs to spend more time onsite for quality control. read more

The Oldwick general store is a Tewksbury staple and for good reason. I've been coming to this establishment for more than 25 years and have seen it transform and change ownership many times. I feel the most recent owners have done a great job updating the place. They've maintained a lot of the historical integrity of the place while updating and modernizing the facilities. The fresh baked rolls and quality of ingredients are unmatched. They make an excellent turkey sandwich and Taylor ham, egg and cheese sandwich. The one majorly disappointing item was the Cesar salad. It was very tiny for the price and was mostly just romaine lettuce. I would avoid ordering that and opt for a nice sandwich instead. read more

Visited the OGS for the first time in years since I don't live in the area anymore. I'm sad to say this place has lost its charm. It used to be a casual deli where you could order your sandwich or whatever, grab your drink and then grab a seat. Disappointed it's now a full service restaurant with menus and wait staff. I wasn't expecting it and it killed the experience I drove a long way for. Definitely need to pipe some music into the dining areas because having conversation in one of those tight little rooms with anyone else in there listening is quite awkward. Flies were also an issue in there. Not a huge fan of my Taylor ham egg and cheese sandwich. The housemade roll was good, but I'm not a huge fan of Taylor ham that seems like it was just heated up rather than given enough time on the flat top. Sad this will no longer be a destination place for me. read more

Great little old school General store with delicious food. Stopped in to grab some lunch to go. I got a Tewksbury Turkey , Oldwick Cheeseburger and BBQ Brisket. All of it was very filling and very Delicious. They all had their own special toppings which work well with it all. House made chips were seasoned and fried perfectly and had some fries on the side which were also crispy as well. They have plenty of menu items from breakfast to lunch , some house made items like pickles and salads to salsas and pastries. There was plenty of seating inside and outside. Also has a parking lot to park. Service was friendly and fast. I'd like to go back and try some other fair. read more

Redownloaded Yelp for this. Went here on a date with my boyfriend yesterday and got the Hog sandwich. You know when you eat something and think about it days, weeks, MONTHS afterwards because it was so good? That is the Hog sandwich. It's a pork belly sandwich with a mayo mix, tomato (which I gave to my bf), and arugula. Now I'm a picky eater so I was hesitant about the arugula, but I took a bite and it was DELICIOUS. The pork belly was juicy with a crispy skin, the buns (which they make homemade) was full of flavor and so soft, and the mayo mixture complemented it all so perfectly. I can't stop thinking about this sandwich. I just had the other half for lunch and it's still amazing the day after. The people working there were so nice, one of them complemented my outfit and the person at the register gave us great recommendations. Poor cell service in the dining area (tbh the whole town so I don't hold that against them) and the wifi wasn't showing up when we were there, but they do have free wifi. read more

Home baked rolls that make every sandwich a "Special", this is not your ordinary General Store. I never miss a chance to get the Tewksbury Turkey - it's as healthy as it is addictive. House roasted turkey on their buns, and the toppings makes it all come together. Can you tell I like it? If you're an OG Slamwich fan and wanted to get an old classic like 'Pop that Pastrami' - prepare to be bummed out. I think there were a lot of elements to the food that made it work really well back then. But now? It's a completely different story. The overall sandwich is one note and lacks flavor and the overall texture is extremely soft to the palette. I was expecting the same peppery punch and saltiness in the pastrami with that delicious savory sauce - but this was NOT it. Maybe there had to be tweaks made with seasonings/textures for the town's demographic, but unfortunately the prices for the downgrade in the food isn't worth it. read more

The food here is not very good quality, the service is slow and it is overpriced. I ordered a sausage breakfast sandwich that was barely palatable because the meat tasted disgusting and it was so salty that I could barely eat it. The grilled cheese bread was stale/fell apart and the cheese wasn't melted properly. Bad, bad, bad...I would leave zero stars if I could. The Oldwick General Store has had better days. My husband and I had an amazing lunch today at the Oldwick General Store! I had the Power Salad and my husband had the Deviled Egg sandwich and both were absolutely delicious and filling, too. Our server was great! She was very attentive and friendly and we enjoyed the room we sat in which had a cozy, rustic feel. Wayyyy overpriced. We got 4 sandwiches and 2 danish which came to $73. My wife's jaw hit the floor when she heard the price. $14 sandwich for a basic sandwich. The danish were so over cooked they were almost inedible. The homemade chips were a nice touch but needed some salt. Pretty much everything made in house, but not worth the price. We had a casual, private Holiday dinner party for 30. Food was absolutely delicious! Scott, the owner/chef, was WONDERFUL to work with on the menu and executed a beautiful, well timed, classic festive dinner.... and we were able to host our party on a Saturday night. The space was perfect for a relaxed BYOB cocktail hour and then we had a lovely two course buffet dinner. ALL guests commenting food was amazing. We chose to bring the cheese plate for cocktail hour and homemade desserts and there was plenty of genuine, kind, help accommodating last minute requests. Ample on site parking. Wow, I'm not sure what side of the bed that hater woke up when he wrote his review, but this place is great. Maybe I should admit, i"m one of those "horsey" types. But just to correct the attire - they're Jodhpurs - not tights - and I'll flaunt my tush if I want to. Ha! The Reuben's are great, but my staple is the turkey sub. The deli counter personnel are always nice and keep the line moving. All of the deli meats are sliced to order on the sandwich and you should seriously get a free t-shirt for finishing one of those humongous subs. I really like Oldwick General Store. They have a great and inexpensive variety of foods. My personal favorite is the avocado BLT wrap, which you can even get on a whole wheat tortilla. They don't go too heavy or light on any ingredients -- everything in the sandwich is in perfect proportions. The chicken Caesar wrap is okay...the dressing they use is more vinegary than creamy, which is definitely a healthier choice but is a little too vinegary. The burgers are also great. The people working there are so friendly! I work in the area by myself all day, and it's nice to take 20 minutes away from work and see smiling faces. read more

This local landmark is not a traditional general store anymore, now it's a deli and grill. The original part of the building dates back to the American Revolution, but the food is always fresh. It's a welcome destination stop on one of my more challenging, 60-mile bike loops. There's bike racks outside, and a large, shaded patio with Adirondack chairs, and a beautiful view of the mountains. The lines can be long when they are busy, but the food is worth waiting for. The sandwiches are huge, and all the salads and soups are homemade, as are many of the pastries. My favorite sandwich is hand-cut. fresh-roasted turkey breast on rye with cranberry sauce. It's a little messy to eat, but that's what napkins are for. If I'm too whipped to choke down solid food (like today when it was 90°F. and humid), the zesty gazpacho is just the thing to cool me off. read more

What happened? I've been coming here since 1996, less and less frequently as the years go on but always willing to give it another chance because of what it used to be. After today, however, I think I'm done. Bad food, unfriendly service and a weird atmosphere. Ordered waffles-didn't have them; ordered French toast-didn't have the right bread; went with 3 egg, hash browns and toast and oatmeal. Oatmeal was pasty and the walnuts had an off taste to them. Couldn't eat it. Hash browns were so over-peppered that we couldn't eat those either. And for some reason they are now selling shoes? Strange and disappointing experience. Hopefully, a new owner/manager will take over at some point and return this place to what it used to be. PS The 2-Star rating is for the baked goods.
