What happened? I've been coming here since 1996, less and less frequently as the years go on but always willing to give it another chance because of what it used to be. After today, however, I think I'm done. Bad food, unfriendly service and a weird atmosphere. Ordered waffles-didn't have them; ordered French toast-didn't have the right bread; went with 3 egg, hash browns and toast and oatmeal. Oatmeal was pasty and the walnuts had an off taste to them. Couldn't eat it. Hash browns were so over-peppered that we couldn't eat those either. And for some reason they are now selling shoes? Strange and disappointing experience. Hopefully, a new owner/manager will take over at some point and return this place to what it used to be. PS The 2-Star rating is for the baked goods. Sam, the owner is a very nice guy but he isn't getting it . . . the clientele want traditional deli and good food, basic breakfast stuff . . . not a bunch of foofoo dishes. This place used to be known for their Rubens . . . not even on the menu now. And while Tewksbury is home to many wealthy people, no one wants to pay $18 for a sandwich and a drink. If you're going to charge that much, it better be enough for two. Under the new owners, the food is still outstanding. The old store was more straight up deli and the new owners have added some upscale touches. My gripe after a dozen visits is the counter people just seem lost and unfriendly. To place an order yesterday was a solid five minutes as the two listless youngsters figured what button to push and asked repeated re-questions. It wasn't a question of a trainee because it has happened with multiple characters while the other youngsters just sort of float in space. For some reason they took my order, ponderously, down to paying before even starting to take my wife's who was standing with me. A 90 second process took 7 or 8 minutes...which with four people in line, is problematic, especially if you just want to pay for a coffee. At least one person just left. The food is great, but they need to pull it together with the customer service...maybe get some older friendly brisk people and instill a fire under everyone. This use to be the weekend hot spot. Not sure what happened. The decor doesn't give you that country town feel. The staff isn't friendly and are extremely slow. The food is just okay for the price. Don't blame covid for the poor service. Other places are packed because of their atmosphere and great food. PS What happened to the awesome carot cake and pastries. No one wants prepackaged goods. We walked in and walked out. Two people were ahead of us waiting for what seemed like hours to complete a coffee order that never seem to end. Stopped in for a drink and bag of chips after a long car ride on our way home. Waited in line to pay for my purchase for over 30 minutes before I was left no choice but to leave without purchasing anything. Very disorganized despite many people working behind the counter. Many people forced to wait to pay while one person manages preparing orders and ringing people up at the same time. No other workers attempted to help her despite the long line. Many of the shelves empty with little to no selection on snacks and drinks. Nothing convenient about this general store if you're looking to stop in for a quick item. read more

I grew up eating here regularly, and I go back for my favorite hangover cure whenever I'm somewhere near (say, half an hour) from Oldwick. You can never go wrong with a sub, the grill is always good, the croissants and carrot cake (such damn good carrot cake) are still some of the best I've ever had - but it sometimes the grill closes early. There's no table service, and you're expected to bus your own table, but this is a rural dining experience at a "general store" - what do you expect. Steve (the owner) is not a cheery guy, but her runs a tight ship. The staff always takes good care of you, but watch out for the rushes which can sometimes lead to pretty bad lines. One more thing to note: no credit cards. Steve will most probably never take them, but there is an ATM inside the store. The hangover cure? Taylor Ham & cheese half-sub with salt, pepper & ketchup. read more

Food 8 + ambiance 7 + value 7 + service 4 = overall 7.3 / 10 (good) This was my favorite place to eat growing up. I occasionally stray, but a grilled ham and mozzarella on rye from the grill or a "No. 10" Italian sub from the deli are still my standards. Sometimes I'll have a slice of chocolate cake. This is the only place I know that has it the way I like, light, moist, and fluffy. There's a big turnover in wait staff, and the service is nothing remarkable. Yet the food is always made right, exactly the way it always was, right down to my grilled sandwich always being cut in thirds. Steve, the owner, must run the place with an iron grip. He looks it. I've never seen him crack a smile. At this point though, I feel rather affectionate toward his frown. I love the boots hanging from the rafters. I love the ramble of dining rooms. The decor is "Somerset Hills country," done right. I love the cafeteria style. I love the view of hills out the window. There is also an indoor eating area for your dining pleasure. I do believe they close around 3:30pm after lunch. They have the best carrot cake, only second to my mothers. I just had lunch at here at Oldwick general store . ( Horse Country )What a terrific place. It really takes you back in time. They have great recommendations when you come in. I had a turkey Reuben and my friend had the cheesesteak. All I have to say is both were absolutely delicious. Extremely friendly staff and the Place looks recently renovated . I was advised to come for dinner as it turns into a five-star restaurant and the owner Chef Scott is a national acclaimed chef. The home-baked products look awesome as well. I can't wait to return and try some other recommendations from the chef. Ask Al for the recommendation of the day. I just went for dinner this past Saturday night. That's when the restaurant turns into 57 Main. Candlelight dinner, bring your own. I don't even know where to begin how awesome this food was. I know he's a nationally acclaimed top 120 chefs in the country , but this was remarkable remarkable food. From the mushroom cappuccino soup which was so insane , to the asiago dumpling appetizers to the flat iron steak tips in some crazy sauce. This place has gone downhill. Yeah you can get big portions but it isn't tasty. The inside seating is dirty and crowded. We waited 25 mins for fries (frozen - nothing special) turkey club and veggie chili. The veggie chili was flavorless and loaded with can corn making it indelible . This place is going downhill faster than Bode Miller. First of all, they have always been more expensive than other local delis. I guess they are pricing it for the locale. Not a good strategy for keeping people coming back. The straw that broke the camel's back was my chicken BLT wrap, bag of chips, and a bottle of water today. $18.50. Are you kidding me?! I thought he said $13.50 which would have been... okay. I just looked at my receipt, otherwise I would have declined to pay and gone elsewhere. Second, there seems to be a bit of rudeness and arrogance in the air. Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks so based on the reviews. The food is okay; it used to be better. The bottled drink selection has been reduced to a somewhat limited selection. Typically I would go for a fountain drink however a look at the filthy tanks splashing iced tea and lemonade will quickly change your mind. Unfortunately, the Oldwick General Store has lost its charm and has lost another customer. This place is at a good location with lots of people coming by. It has a home like feel to it and the food taste well. Despite these great qualities there is a serious lack of the basics. The place seriously need to start cleaning. It is unacceptable how gross it is. They need to be better at logistics too: Let people know if they run out of something instead of just not serving the home fries on a plate. Make sure cheeses is added to a omelet when asked. Make sure they have non-empty ketchups at table. Make sure the tables are cleaned. Open a window or door to air out the place. Etc. These aren't hard things to do. STAY AWAY. Unless you want to support horrible customer service, don't eat here. My family has been eating here for years, but I went for the first time on Christmas Eve. Let me start by saying I have worked in the food industry and understand that working holidays is terrible. Anyways, my aunt especially had been so excited to order the grilled cheese off the grill, because she loves it SO much. Too bad. We walked in at 12:01 (I had checked my phone). We looked over the menu for exactly 3 minutes, and were ready to order at 12:04. At this point we were told the grill portion had closed at noon. That's right, a whole minute before we walked in, and 4 minutes before we tried ordering off of it. Now, had the entire restaurant closed then, I totally would have understood. However the restaurant wasn't closing until 2:00, so they had to stay there anyways. There were EIGHT people in our group, so its not like they weren't going to make any money off of us. At this point the man was so incredibly rude.. I mean INCREDIBLY rude to my super friendly 85 year old grandfather that I was ready to leave. They don't deserve a dime the way they treat people. Talk about Christmas spirit. We decided to order subs anyways, at which point we were yelled at for not ordering the exact way they wanted us to, and they threw the cheese onto my fiance's sub from literally 2 feet away. Plus, the subs are average. Sure, they taste good, but they aren't any better than most other subs. My grandparents have been going here for decades, as I said, and have known about and heard all along how nasty the owner is, and apparently the guys he hires are just as pathetic. This is a great spot. It's always hustling and bustling on the weekend, especially in the warmer months. They have plenty of seating inside and out. When I'm out for a ride on my Triumph, it's the one place my friend and I usually stop for a cup of espresso and a little bite to eat. The building itself is really classic and so is the feel inside. You can tell people are seeking a certain vibe that is hard to find these days. It takes you back to a time when life was simpler. The products and the decor are really enjoyable. If you have passed through town and haven't stopped in, be sure to do it next time. If it's not too cold, check out the lawn to the right o the building. You can sit and relax in big Adirondack chairs. There aren't many places like this these days. It's a good spot to bring the kids, many families make it their weekend routine to come in for something to eat. read more

Nothing much can beat a childhood haunt endorsed by grandpa. Ever since I was a wee bean, I would go to the General Store with my grandparents for some simple yet satisfying meals. My grandfather has been going here for years upon years as his early morning routine. Not sure if his order has changed much, but he would always go in for a buttered roll before anyone else in the house was awake. There's a lot to be said for an establishment that keeps Bapa happy for years on end. Lots of seating, (plus some outdoor spots), a full deli, plus a separate counter for hot sandwiches, salads and soups. I can speak for the BLT especially, (add avocado). I don't live in the area any longer, but when I visit, the General Store is always at the top of my list for a warm and fuzzy experience. read more

What a classic, rustic, quaint little store in downtown Oldwick! We were visiting a friend this weekend and stopped by this tried-and-true store to grab lunch before apple picking down the street. The general store has been a family-owned and operated business for decades and still maintains that same charm despite the change in management. The staff are friendly and accommodating. We ended up ordering a few different sandwiches, including a BLT, chicken parm, and a pastrami, all of which were very good. There is also a cute bakery that abuts the kitchen...the snicker doodle cookie was quite good as well!!! Ask for Al if you're there; he will take good care of you. This is definitely worth stopping by because it is central to the culture of Oldwick. read more

Long wait over and over again ... ... very slow. The food is adequate but literally waiting for 20 minutes for an egg sandwich to-go is ridiculous. High prices don't help the problem. $4 will get you a bagel with 3 slices of bacon, literally only 3 slices That was the fast option, as after 15 minutes of waiting they still did not start my to-go sandwich. and informed people who were ordering that they would have to wait 20 minutes for their orders. Some turned away and so did I. This is not my first time walking away with nothing/something else not from the grill. With 3 kitchen area workers it seems mismanaged, the cook was relieved when I got just the bagel, the place was not overly crowded, step it up! read more

I don't know what anyone sees in this place. The General Store is an old building with creaky floors and is an expensive version of a deli. It's OK for a cup of coffee and a muffin for breakfast-on-the-go, and the burgers are OK for lunch, but that is about the only appeal. My wife and I have been there for breakfast on Sunday mornings. Frankly, it was nothing special. Service was slow, mostly because the little guy doing the cooking can't handle two orders at the same time. One morning I came in and went to the grill counter. No one else was there and the counterman looked at me. I asked for "a bacon and egg on a hard roll to go". He turned around and did something behind the counter then came back about 2 minutes later and said "Can I help you?" Looks to be a classic case of attention deficit disorder. If you happen to be a local farmer, the General Store is the go-to place in the morning. George Melick, a county freeholder and a local farmer, is there every morning "holding court" with his farmer friends. The General Store does provide great entertainment. The Tewksbury area is full of high-income families who come to the General Store for breakfast on the weekends. I enjoy sitting and watching parents read the financial section of the newspaper and ignore their children while they yell and run around the place. And let's not forget the horsey set! They come in wearing muddy riding boots and spandex pants. Ladies, PLEASE look in the rear view mirror before you leave your house. I hate to have to say it, but the reviewers are not wrong. It IS overpriced. It IS disappointing. It IS extremely slow. If you want any service at all --even for them to TAKE YOUR MONEY- you'll have to wait until the oft single staff member is ready-- which may take a while since they are also charged with cooking, cleaning, opening, closing, restocking.... I always try to go with exact change because I'll be late for my engagements if I have to wait for the register. I absolutely CANNOT trust that I will get in and out of there in a timely manner if I get anything other than a coffee (which, of course, I make myself)! I recently went for breakfast with some out-of-town guests and we literally waited for OVER AN HOUR (not exaggerating!!!) We were "patient" only because we were enjoying each others' company-- and it was their choice based on some fond memories of days long past. There's not enough staff and from what I hear the owner had cut hours and pay was generally poor. What do you expect from people? I sincerely wish the general store was a wonderful gem as it is the only convenience store in the small town of Oldwick. But, convenient it is not. I'm afraid it's a let down and the unfortunate consensus. :-( I sincerely wonder if the owner even cares about the business or its community?
