My mother interviewed 3 different funeral services and chose Quinn McGowen because of Vinnie…read moreSpinelli. He was wonderful with her. At 82 and terminally ill she needed patience and someone to explain everything very clearly. He did a fantastic job. And the price was very reasonable. From that first meeting through her cremation, almost a year later, Vinnie and Quinn McGowen were wonderful. The night she passed away, the gentlemen who came to the house to pick her up were also wonderful. We are very happy with her choice and, when needed, we will choose Quinn McGowen again.

I have a mother in her early 90s who's currently doing quite well, far better than most her age…read more Even so, she's very realistic and practical and has been busy getting her affairs in order. She asked that I look into making final arrangements now (according to her wishes, of course) so that it's not something that has to be dealt with when the day comes and family members are the most vulnerable and least prepared to handle this kind of matter. First, I spent some serious time doing research online, and then - as one excellent article I read suggested - I got ready to "go shopping" with a laundry list of carefully prepared questions in hand. However, before I hit the road, I called the various establishments in the area to get a feel for the individual in charge of preplanning. After which I made appointments and met with each of them at their places of business. The final choice, hands down, was/is Quinn McGowen on Willow Woods Drive off Oleander Drive. Definitely the most upfront, professional and fairly priced of all that I investigated ... and as dignified and sensitive as one would want and expect. The professional I worked with is Brenda Cahill who was a absolute delight, especially when discussing such a sensitive matter as this.

The Wilmington National Cemetery, much like other National Cemeteries, is both sad and inspiring…read more When you first enter, you notice the rows of white headstones. They aren't all in perfect alignment, but after walking up and down those rows it's easy to forget the imperfections and focus on the inscriptions: unknown, unknown soldier, employee USA, beloved father, son, etc. On Memorial Day, Wilmington stands out from the some other National Cemeteries in NC, by holding its memorial day service on the actual holiday. If you're around, part of the ceremony has people reading the names of the North Carolina soldiers or veterans who have passed away in the prior year. To close the ceremony, the horn plays taps, a sound which, if you've ever heard it in a location like this, is an incredible experience. There were a few parents who brought their kids, flags in hand, to make sure no tombstone was without one. Unfortunately, there were far more elderly and older people than young. That's disheartening. One thing I noticed here, Wilmington has more recent internments -- at least post WWI, although there were a few from the Spanish American War. For having so many WWI through Iraqi war vets, there weren't that many flowers on individual sites. Perhaps the policies on that are different here. Still, this is a nice spot, peaceful and well maintained given its location within the city.
