Great place to teach others about Mexican history and culture in LA. The first time I was introduced to Olvera Street, I was on a second grade field trip. Since then, I've been coming back here time and time again to experience my cultures great food, art, traditions, shops, and history. This place has some really great places to eat alongside providing good music/performances. The vendors always have new and very unique Mexican items. I highly encourage visiting the museums here because they are not only free, they have a lot to offer. It really helps you better understand the hardships Mexicans faced during racist America and it teaches you to appreciate Mexican culture. Even though the city of Los Angeles has evolved all around Olvera street, this place has remained true to its roots. Love this place! Great food, shopping and history!! I've been coming to Olvera Street since as far back as I can remember. I came with grade school, Girl Scouts, family and friends throughout the years. The best way to get there is by train. Olvera Street is right across the street from the beautiful Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles. If not by train, there are several pay-to-park lots dabbled around the city. It feels like a little bit of Mexico right here in LA. There are many shops to explore and although there is a lot of repeat items in each store, you are bound to find some unique treasure if you look for them. Clothing, trinkets, hats, keychains, pottery, candy, purses.... The food is pretty decent too, most of the restaurants are crowded during the typical meal times, but worth the wait for the ambience alone. Taquitos are superb as are the churros. If you've never been to Olvera Street, I highly recommend that you go at least once in your life. Hopefully you'll catch one of the many live entertainments or some traditional dancing in the gazebo. Kitschy but awesome. Olvera Street is a great spot in a tour of Los Angeles. There is so much history and so many photogenic spots in this area. There are several museums, good food and on certain days, festivals. Organizers love to plan special events, fairs and festivals here. I could list the different museums, or the different festivals or the different shops and the different eateries, but know that it is totally worth it to visit Olvera Street to get a sense of Angeleno history. There is an old winery building which features so many old photos from the past. You will want to spend quality time because it makes you feel that you are in another country like Mexico where there is culture, love, family.l blond and good food. I've been coming here ever since I was a wee tot in my fathers arms. Being Mexican American and a resident of Los Angeles, this was a part of my culture growing up here. That being said, my review may be a little biased. Olvera Street (or as I affectionately know it as La Plazita Olvera) is a historic landmark of Los Angeles. It is adjacent to other landmarks such as Chinatown and Union Station and a short walk from the Arts District and Little Tokyo. Olvera Street is somewhat small but makes up for it in culture and events. Throughout the year there are many celebrations held here. I've had the pleasure of attending everything from El Novenario counting down to dia de Los muertos to las posadas in December and even the blessing of the animals on Palm Sunday weekend. I've had the pleasure of dining at almost every single one of Olvera Streets eateries from Mr. Churro to Casa La Golondrina. I think every single spot here satisfies my Mexican heart. And the shops. And the vendors. Oh the colors and sounds and wares and delights that Olvera Street has to offer!!! While some of the vendors have become tourist traps, many of the shops support local latinx artists by selling their goods. I love strolling through their many shops. There's something for everyone! The power of searching for churros in LA lol. I was craving for churros at the time and I was looking on Yelp for a churro spot in LA; it eventually led me to Mr Churro (I already wrote a review for that place.....spoiler alert: the churros there were alright). Anyway, turns out that Mr Churro is located on Olvera Street, a very scenic street with Latin American vibes. This pedestrian street is lined with connected stands that sell various things, from leather goods to Hispanic dresses. There are some LA souvenirs here, so calling all tourists! On the walk you'll also see a couple of cantinas and hole-in-the-wall Mexican food spots. The street isn't remarkably long; I probably spent about 30 min max here, so if you're interested in sightseeing here, might as well grab a meal around here too! read more

The oldest street that basically Los Angeles grew from. Historically, Olvera St has some of the oldest Los Angeles monuments like the oldest standing residence in Los Angeles from 1877 which is Avila Adobe. Loads of Mexican restaurant and shops to choose from. Philippe's the Original which is known for the french dip sandwich is two blocks north near Chinatown if you're not in the mood for mexican food. There some tiny museums like the the Sepulveda House museum, the America Tropical Interpretive Center, Italian American museum, and Museum of Social Justice that are located inside that are easy to miss but interesting to see all inside Olvera St. Located within walking distance across Union Station. This is very much a tourist destination enveloped by the historic La Placita Church and countless souvenir stalls that are located along the path. Genuine and authentic, Olvera Street is taken for granted by Angelinos yet it never fails to attract crowds. PROS: The many different shopping opportunities along the stalls which all basically sell items that range from tourist traps (keychains, shirts) to useful clothing and leather shoes. Prices are inexpensive. CONS: The parking is difficult and limited. Use public transportation or ride share services if possible. Union Station is right across the street. Crowds are extreme at times. Bring cash! TIP: Take your picture on the burro (donkey)! read more

There are so many shops and goodies it's hard to see each of them and review each one. If you live in Southern California I would highly recommend spending a day out here. If you come on a weekend parking is a nightmare. We came out on a weekend where it was the donut festival, and the lines were over an hour long for each doughnut booth, and they had run out. Olvera Street has been a fixture in Los Angeles ever since there was an El Pueblo De Los Reina De Los Angeles. And although it may not be a must-see attraction, it's a cool place for tourists to visit. It is a slightly hidden attraction. You can drive by its entrance a few times and still miss it. Which serves it well, because once you step into Olvera Street's red brick road, you're shut out from the rest of the world and immersed into Mexican culture. Food. Clothes. Toys. Art. The oldest house in LA. All crowding in on you, claustrophobics beware. It's basically an ongoing street fair from south of the border. You may think it's cool, and your kids will see all these things that they want. And what did I do? I sat on a brick planter under a shade tree with my Kung Pao Shrimp and soaked it all in as I ate. That is, until I heard mariachi music coming from the next block. I walked over, and here's a Sunday afternoon dance party in the plaza. A white boy eating Chinese food while listening to Latin music at a Mexican street fair - who says we can't be multicultural? E Pluribus Unum. Olvera Street is good for probably half an hour, more if there's an event at the plaza. It's worth a visit. read more

Olvera Street is one of those L.A. mainstays that everybody must visit. Yes, yes, it is kind of a weird, tourist style street but there is something about this place that is truly fun. Like most people from L.A. I have been coming here as long as I can remember. As a child, I loved it. There are a bunch of business stalls that line the center of the street. And, it has been that way forever. Through the years what they sell in these stalls has changed with the times but, though the items have changed, the overall visual feeling and energy of this place has not changed at all. It is the same as when I came here as a child. To the sides of the stalls are the businesses that are located in actual structures. Within these stores you will find a wide variety of curiosity items and things you never knew that you wanted or needed. Overall, in terms of shopping, this is a great place to find that unique gift that is truly something different from the norm. There are also several restaurants that line the interior of Olvera Street. They are all, obliviously, Mexican cuisine orientated. Each one is a unique place to dine. There are a couple larger, dine in style resultants, and several food stall. Each offers a unique interpretation of Cali-Mex Food. Overall, fun place. Been here a couple of times already and I just love the atmosphere they created here. It really feels like you are traveling down a street in Mexico as you explore the little stores and stands here and there. The street has vendors in the middle, cutting the street in half, so I usually go down one side and down the other. Shops and restaurants as well as museums and exhibits break off from the main path. For some of the shops you will either have to take a small set of stairs up or down to see their main store or the rest of the store. The stores offer a range of items from traditional clothing to prints of artwork and from snacks to littlw knick knacks. Some restaurants even have a mariachi band playing music while you eat. When you get to the plaza area, they do have some vendors there and a fruit cart that sells delicious lemonade with chia seeds. When we were there, they had live music playing and people were dancing and having fun. The street does get a bit crowded at times, but there is definitely enough space for traffic to move. I feel like I end up discovering new things here and there as I explore more and make sure to look around first before you buy things because price differences happen. read more

This is where the City of Los Angeles began on September 4, 1781; therefore, you are at the beginning of the City. I first was here in 1980, and did not come back for another 30 plus years and made a trip there yesterday and it was like going to a time warp. Be sure to look in all the stores you will be amazed at what you will find. The people are so nice and helpful. The restrooms are clean and there is handicap access. Before I moved to SoCal from Texas I thought that Olvera Street was this long walkway of shops and restaurants....not really the case so don't go into shock if you have never been there and you can walk it in a few minutes. It has some cool little kiosk of Mexican wares and food items and I have eaten a number of the restaurants there and they were all pretty good. The last visit was Mexican Independence day (September 17)....it was packed and it wasn't my intent to go there specifically for that, but we were there anyway. They had a bunch of stuff going on and since we took the train parking wasn't an issue walking right across from Union Station. If you have or haven't been here it is worth some time. read more

Olvera Street is like stepping into a time machine and going back in time to a rustic part of town that shows you old tradition, art, music, family time and good authentic Mexican cuisine. Olvera Street is the oldest part of Los Angeles. A beautiful place to see and photograph. The Plaza which is a public square welcomes all and it is next to the marketplace and vendors. Important sites to see include the Plaza, Avila Adobe, Nuerstra Senora Reina De Los Angeles, Pico House, The Pelanconi house which is now The Golondrina café, El Pueblo De Los Angeles Historic Monument and the surrounding historical buildings. Make sure to visit Olvera Street during the week of Dia de Los muertos/day of the dead. It is very festive and it is filled with nine days of remembrance for that have already passed. Also on that Saturday there is a Day of the dead 5K run. I personally like the food from the smaller restaurants and vendors. Make sure to try the champurado and the taquitos. I returned to Olvera Street this weekend for the first time in a few years...It's a solid place to take visiting friends who are interested in the early days of Los Angeles or around the Dia de Los Muertos events. You'll find authentic items made in Mexico, including blankets, dresses, trinkets, candies, puppets... This time I did notice an unsettling number of homeless encampments/tents on the surrounding sidewalks, which could discourage some visitors and is cause for concern. Sadly, there are many areas of LA that are facing (or not facing) this issue. It was also misleading to have public restrooms signs that just led to portapotties...no thanks! If you're looking for a real bathroom, Union Station is close by and safe to walk to during the day. The restaurants and food stands all had long lines, not sure if it's like this every weekend but you may opt to eat elsewhere if pressed for time. read more

I love it here. A very small jewel in the middle of L.A. directly across the street from Union Station on Alameda St. When you start at the south end, you get a whiff of the leather goods that are in the merchant stores. In the middle, there's a candle store who's aroma spills out into the plaza. In this store my daughter found a real ofrenda and also saw the world's largest and oldest candle. (It's HUGE!) Many of the stores sold Mexican candy, duritos, huaraches, luchador masks, and marionettes. The West side of the street has more restaurants and a store that sells gorgeous blusas. (Think Frida Khalo) On the Eastern end there is the oldest house in all of Los Angeles (El Pueblo de Los Angeles) where you can see how Native American, African, and Europeans in the area lived. We are breakfast at L.A.'s oldest restaurant (El Paseo) and I ordered their menudo, which is one of my many weaknesses. The broth was rich and the tripa was good, thick, cut right, and clean. I'm definitely going back there again. Finally, on the far north side is Cielito Lindo which I will write about in a separate review. This gorgeous gem is literally within walking distance of both Little Tokyo and Chinatown. I will keep coming back here again and again. read more

A trip by train to visit the birthplace of Los Angeles. Historical Olvera Street is our destination and it was a short walk up the hill across from the Union Station. The entry is by the front of the baptist church and immediately you get the vibe of being in a country across the southern California border. But really, this is old california and we see here the transformation from the old Avila Adobe and the newness of surrounding downtown, an older section of Chinatown and the colorful people that fill the streets of old LA. Tricolrs are everywhere, but you are here to explore and shop and take in a lunch. Olvera street was a happy outing with much to see and take in. Great shopping and many places to choose for good food. We would do Olvera Street again when we get a chance in the future. A good place to learn history of LA. read more

I love Olvera Street!! Like many kids in and around the Los Angeles area, would go on many a field trip to this fun historic place to enjoy the music and food. As an adult, I go for the nostalgia of my youth, but also to embrace the wonderful experience I have each time I visit. Olvera Street used to stand out, and now seems more hidden by the over growth of the downtown LA area. Parking is brutal, but once you're strolling along the walkway, you'll quickly forget the parking challenges, and you'll start to feel like you've been transported back into old Mexico. The shops are quaint, and you will want to stop to take in all of the amazing finds. I have purchased several mortar and pestles for gifts! The vendors are all so very nice. They really go out of their way to be nice, and help you with your quest to find what youre looking for. Everything is authentic, just like the people. Shopping is always made better by food! And food you will find. The rice, the beans, the taquitos... this is where heaven is. You'll want to just sit and stuff your face with all of the goodness. Hee hee, seriously I think someone might have heard my gripe :P And took pity on my selfishness and made this beautiful historical gem flourish! Prices I've noticed are not the same as they were back then. Thank God! As for the authentic leather, pottery, clothing (except touristy t-shirts, etc), are priced accordingly (higher) because of the quality of craftsmanship and the fact that you won't find them anywhere else, but Mexico, San Diego and the little "Mercado"/Mexican storefronts w/individual vendors. But as for the rest of the priceless "little trinkets" etc, they aren't too bad, affordable and rest pretty darn cheap - especially for the kids that come on field trips, will go nuts here. Restaurants are all good, but you have those 3-4 that stand out from the rest and my personal favorites are La Buena Noche, Juanita's & Cielito Lindo being my last if the others are too full. With all the recent changes in DTLA at the accelerated pace, this little piece of "Old LA" is quite a sight for those wanting that temporary relief from the trendy hustle and bustles to go back in time for a minute and/or to get away (w/out hopping a plane) to another place and indulge. I went once or twice as a child and again as an adult many years ago, but finally went again at the end of 2018. My fiance' and I took the Metrolink, which we hadn't done in ages either just to do something different. It was on a Saturday, but I try to go to touristy places on less crowded weekdays if at all possible. Olvera Street was very packed as I guess is expected for a Saturday with good weather and we ate at a tasty Mexican place and browsed the shops, that's about it. It would have been more enjoyable without as many people plus it isn't very spacious around there. The Metrolink commute wasn't as pleasant as when I last rode it, but I can't knock Olvera Street due to that. The street vendors all pretty much sell the same items and there are a lot of eating places to choose from. I liked some of the gift shops. read more

Ay-yi-yi-yi...Canta y no llores...Porque cantando se alegran...Cielito Lindo los corazones And Cielito Lindo, the eatery at the end of Olvera Street, is THE place to go for delish taquitos and avocado sauce. Just a hop, skip and a stroll from the 'hood of my own peeps, Little Tokyo, is this wonderfully exuberant little block full of South-of-the-Border-inspired activity, colorful and repetitive souvenir stalls and aromatic eateries. Gee, I had not been to Olvera Street since I was a child, but what a kick to come back during the holiday season and get a sense of how Mexico celebrates a feliz navidad. I have never seen so many fluorescent colored guitars, personalized no less for only $8 each. Of course, there is the stuffed burro upon which serape-draped, sombrero-brimmed children mount for photos, complete with hopefully unloaded rifles to make the boys look muy macho for posterity. Don't forget the churro wagon, which has the homey aroma of cinnamon. And this was all capped off by a mariachi singer in the plaza in front of the big gazebo with the full nativity scene. It's hard not to get caught up in the spirit of the place. As far as I'm concerned, this is a must-see for any Angeleno both permanent and vacationing. read more

Unfortunately, I haven't (yet) ventured out of this country except to Canada. I don't even own a passport. Which is sad, since I am first-generation Hungarian and desperately want to visit my home-turf. Since my financial situation is one of the main factors for this depravity, instead of actually visiting our Southern Border neighbors, I have to settle for the culture and history to come to me in the form of Olvera Street. With easy access by hopping on the Metro to Union Station (which is obviously easier than a drive or flight); I'm not complaining. The first words to come out of my mouth the first time I saw the fiesta at Olvera Street was, "I feel like I'm in Mexico!" Granted, I don't know what it really feels like to be in Mexico but I was greeted by a mariachi-style band, a Mexican singer, and some flamenco dancers before I even stepped foot into the main street/plaza. Bombarded by culture and heritage, I made my way toward the shops/resturants. Olvera Market is the equation of a a flea market plus a farmer's market mixed with a Mexican fiesta. Stands filled to the brim with wrestler (luchador) masks, pottery, sombreros, folk clothing, little Mexican snacks, hand-made tooled leather goods, and touristy items such as post cards and keychains line the street while the scent of carne asada and churros wafe through the air. It is not only a photograph waiting to happen but also the ideal spot to find that unique cultural item or handmade goodie. I am an obsessed owl fan and fell in love with some handmade leather owl purses (see photo). After my boyfriend had to bust out his Spanish skills to speak to the seller, I unfortunately learned that it carries a $100 price tag which was out of my budget. I assure you, I will own that little guy, though. Olvera Street is a history and culture lesson that everyone should experience at some point or another and definitely a spot to take your out-of-town friend or relative. Plus, the free browsing price tag offsets the money you will fork over for the goods offered. Not a bad deal. read more

Finishing up here on our way to quick day trip on Saturday. I'm giving this area five stars as it has been forgotten as a historical area. Founded in and ordered the city that he found it in 1780 by King Charles 111 of Spain. Olvera Street it's a historical Street in downtown Los Angeles and part of El Pueblo De Los Angeles historic monument around 19th century Los Angeles Plaza. Did not begin with spinners 1781 according to other historians. 1820s served as the Hub of the city's social and economic life. Today it contains three very important statues dedicated to prominent figures. 1877 it was called Wine/Vine St. An honor of the County's first judge Augustus Olvera. There was a large Zocalo area a plaza as the Americans call it with karaoke entertainment and people dancing and having a great time. There are quite a few vendors of Mexican garments, toys, candy and wonderful leather shop full of sandals and all sorts of bags. I loved it when we first walked in the smell of leather smells so good. The owner was busy working on new bags. Originally, I was very excited about going there as I was searching for the chile relleno I cannot find in San Diego. Can you believe that? So true, so true. Anyway after doing some research and having my dear Yelp friend Rob A. help with locating a restaurant in the area and speaking to a few of the locals there came across a couple that looked intriguing and yes smelled good. LOL well to make a long story even shorter my grandson wanted Chinese and so to my son they're sick of Mexican food. OMG! My son to do a little shopping there for his family then we took our walk over to D Italian American Museum, on the way to Chinese. It was a very quick trip considering the train ride was a 6 hours. If you get a chance to go into that area it is worth it as there are museums not only in this area but throughout Los Angeles. read more
