My family and I went to this place thinking of new adventure we are about to have and enjoy the summer. When we got there the place is run down and unclean and rubbish everywhere like nooners been attending the area to keep it to codes. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. The "Learn to Kayak" whitewater kayaking course has only improved since last year. This year they've dropped the whitewater rescue component, where we practiced rescuing each other from the rapids in the park with a rope - this took a long time and although interesting in a way was sort of boring and not something new kayakers would be doing. Instead, they've added surfing, which is what it sounds like, trying to surf facing upstream on the bottom of a rapid, and rollover practice. The other skills training components remain but also seemed trimmed down and more fun - practicing ferrying at the bottom of a rapid, for example, instead of in the middle of nowhere where the current was not very strong. The food is also a little improved... still sandwiches, but also more fruit, including watermelon, and a wider selection of cookies. If you're tired of just kayaking in flat water, give this class a try! read more

I bought a Groupon for a zipline experience for my Kids, niece, & husband. We planned it way ahead because my niece had to request work off and we all had to coordinate schedules to be together. I reserved our time to be today. December 2, @10am-2pm. Well we arrived trying to find the place. No sign is available. We had to figure out where it was. When we went behind the building there was no one there. Inside the building looked like someone trashed the inside of the house. We called the phone number on file a number of times and even text message as that's what it said on the voice mail. No response at all. All in all we waiting about an hour and everyone was getting upset in my party. The place looked like it was abandon. Like a scene from the walking dead. My kids were afraid to go outside the car. I feel like I got scammed with my Groupon. Pictures online were deceiving. Then my daughter looked at them and the pictures online were from 4 years ago. Well things change in a year. This was suppose to be a nice trip ended being a flop. I want a refund of what I paid Groupon. I will contact them. Update. I finally received a text message from them. At about 8pm the same day. I'm already completely turned off to returning to the place. It shouldn't take them 10 hours to contact me especially if their business phone is a mobile device. read more

I feel conflicted about writing this review because the last thing that I want to do during this pandemic is make life harder for a small business owner. However, the owner isn't taking any precautions to ensure social distancing, and I feel obligated to let people know they will be risking their safety and the safety of others by doing business here. Kayaking seems like a great social distancing activity, so we decided to call and see how they're doing business. The owner told us that he is 100% able to maintain social distancing. He mentioned that when we get picked up, we could "ride in the trailer attached to the van" but if we wanted to sit in the van "it's big enough for people to keep a safe distance". That couldn't be further from the truth. As we are loading our kayaks, I see there are 6 of us, and no one would've been able to sit in the trailer so I have no idea what he had in mind there. Well, four more people showed up. So there were a total of 10 of us in this van with no more than two feet between each person. I am so devastated. I feel like we just wasted spending nearly two months in isolation on one van ride that we were totally misled about. read more

I met with Manu earlier who mentioned that Olympic Outdoor Center could provide me with San Marcos River pickup service for only $10. All I would need to do is call his or the owners, Ben's, mobil and either one of them could come and pick you up. I asked, of course,"How long would it take for you, or Ben, to pick me up" "Just depends, just call us when you get to the dam and we will be there in 15'ISH minutes" WAIT THERES A DAM IN SAN MARCOS??!! I replayed with"..okay, so call you at the dam and SOMEONE will come get me. RIGHT?? SOMEONE will be there in like 30 minutes" "YEAH, man, we got you" After this deceleration of assurance, I got into my kayak. Ready to explore the unknown, and began my adventure into the unknown. Hoping, that everything will happen as stated. Someone will come and save me after my travels because if not then...umm what do I do??!! I push the negative, fearful thoughts, out of my head and think what was stated will happen. When I get to the dam,I will call Ben, the owener(?) and he will come and get me everything going to be okay. TRUST THE COMPANY!! Focus on the river. After about 80 minutes of kayaking I reach the Blanco, San Marcos river where, as directed by the company, called Ben, the owner, and stated "..hey man, I'm at the merger. Where am I EXACTLY meeting you? He stated "meet me on the left BEFORE THE dam!" "okay man, so at Texas State Tubes?" He stated "... no thats private property do not go there!" With confusion I stated, "..okay so after Texas State Tubes, not after the bridge, because thats also private property, but before" If you are confused, dont worry, I was as well. I see tubes, I smell beer, I hear Randy Rodgers, I know I am on the verge of Texas State Tubes which tells me, BASED OFF OF THE DIRECTIONS OF THE OWENER, that I am not supposed to park at TsT and that there is a pick up strip BEFORE the bridge. WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT!!! THERE ISNT A PICK UP SPOT ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BRIDGE!!!! IT IS ON THE right side of the bridge!!! And IF YOU GO PAST THE BRIDE THEN YOU ARE 100% Effed and you will have to pull your kayak up a steep incline and HOPE you are in the right place. What I did was paddle my A off to the back of the bridge called Ben. "..Hey man, I dont know if im at the right place but I am here" Ben saying "Dropping off a big crowd and can get you." Well dude, you didn't come NORE did I see you drop off anyone. After 15 minutes of waiting I called this company AT LEAST 15-20 times with ZERO answer.NOTHING. I docked at 2:30 and WAITED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD FOR oooovvvvver 2 hours. Yes, two hours, WAITING. Calling. EVENING TEXTING. Ben even messed me saying "I am on my way" Well where are you going to meet me? What vehicle are you in? You know the important information you need if you are X amount of miles/hours away from home with no mode of transportation. After TWO HOURS of waiting and calling on the side of the road, FOR OVER TWO HOURS WITH NO COMMUNICATION, I finally decided to get an Uber, get my car and picked up my own damn kayak. This is the thing. If you are swamped, busy, whatever, I get that, but you ONE HUNDERED PERCENT ignored my phone calls. You turned your phone off. I even called your worker and his phone went straight to vmail. You DID NOT keep in contact with me. YOU LEFT ME ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD! With no communication what so ever FOR OVER 2 HOURS!! KNOWING I CANNOT DEPEND ON YOU!! I got an uber, drove the 5 minutes back to my car, picked up my car to pick up my kayak AND guess what I saw. THE GUY PICKING UP A GROUP OF 10!!! WTF!!! Dear Ben, you sent me a text at 2:15 saying "I am on my way" I waited and you never showed. Like I said, I wanted to believe in your company. I wanted to recommend your business to my friends who wish to kayak with me. This was such an amazing day for me and my son. Ben planned such a great trip for us. We started at the university and the crystal clear water was amazing. He then took us down these fun small rapids and we spent the rest of the day fishing the calm and beautiful San Marcos river. TERRIBLE, don't recommend. We purchased a Groupon and reserved a time slot online--when we appeared there was no one around to help us. As we were wondering around figuring out what we should do/where we should go, instructors from another company came in and told us the owners were NEVER there. Waited 20 minutes before someone (independent company?) came to help us only to tell us he will NOT honor Groupons. Told us we should speak to the owners, who are still no where to be found. We called the number provided with no success, so we left... after giving mosquitoes a feast. read more

What a fun day! I went out to the river with my brother and my mom after finding a killer groupon for stand up paddle boards or kayaks. The shop is fairly easy to find and the man that works there was extremely helpful and friendly. We rented two sup boards and a kayak and the man took us and the gear to the drop off point. We had a great time going down the river... mom even did the rapids! I would definitely return! PS the boards and kayaks are made of a plasticky material (not a fiberglass board) so they aren't the nicest, but they worked fine for our purposes. read more

I'll start this review by saying that we did have a good time here. This place has so much potential and I hope to come back and see them doing well. Nothing is clearly marked and areas desperately need some TLC. Our cabana area was nice. The bug net wasn't installed properly along the outside edge so it was just flapping all day. There wasn't direct water access from our cabana so we had to play in the water in the same area where kayaks and paddle boards were being put in & taken out of the water. The kids loved the floating island but the location made one side a bit hazardous with smaller kids where the island meets picnic table & concrete slab. The swing was fun but we did not try the zip line feature with an aluminum ladder against a tree not secured very well. Directly across from our area was a volleyball pit, again could use some TLC but young kids had fun playing in the sand. The only bathroom is up the hill at the top of the driveway. It's a camp style bathroom (open air) but wish the lock worked. Like I said in the beginning, overall we had a good day at the Groupon Price. I'm not sure I would come back full price unless the area is cared for a bit more. This place has so much potential and I really hope to see them succeed. read more

DO NOT GO THERE! This is the WORST experience our family has ever had. First, he came down to the river after all of us were there. He had no equipment prepared and asked us to take the kayaks and load them onto his ghetto truck that was dirtier than the river we kayaked in. He had no cushions for the kayaks and the life jackets were about 30 years old. We had to help the other guests load their kayaks because we would never have left otherwise. And because he was so cheap we waited another 25 minutes while he changed and drove his truck to a spot where he would not have to pay for parking after the kayaks were unloaded. After returning he told us we owed an additional $10. 00 per person for the ghetto ride. He then made us wait an additional 15 minutes to get our change because there was no way I was leaving a tip. He finally came out because he had another tour and gave us $20 in quarters. What an a**swi**p! read more

PLEASE READ!!! I wish I had read reviews before coming to this place! My boyfriend and I wanted to kayak San Marcos. We aren't from the area, so we called around and this was the only place that rented kayaks in the area. It was a little off the beaten path. Once we got there, we didn't know where to check in. We wondered down to where the kayaks were, but no one working there was to be found. There were some campers around (in the backyard), and some friends of the owner, none of which knew where the owner was. One lady said she was "helping out" but had no idea of the prices or options for kayaking. She just asked what we wanted to do? We weren't from the area and had no idea what the options were. Isn't that your job as a bussiness? she said she would go get the owner, but came back without him 20 min later. While she was gone, one of the owners friends suggested we "do a loop" where you get out and "port" the kayak twice across a two-lane road. This wasn't our first time kayaking, but we definitely were not experts. We finally chose to paddle down the river and get him to pick us up a few miles down. He said call when we were at the dam, but not to bring anything we didn't want to get wet... That was the only mention of a dam. We got in really wet kayaks, signed no waver, and given very minimal instructions. So disorganized. We started paddling. We got to a bridge too low to paddle under, this must be where you "port" the kayak. We had to throw it over a 5 foot fence and carry it across a busy road around a busy turn. Ok. Glad that's over. Get back in the kayak, not even 15 minutes, another place we had to get out??? At this point, it's too late to turn back. about an hour later, we get to something that sounds like a dam. Without any instructions, we decide to stop and get out of the kayak to see how large the dam was. Not sure how to get over it? We walked about 800 meters and looked over at least a 20 foot drop! This was so dangerous. He just mentioned it in passing. We went back and had to carry the kayak back and throw it down some stairs. Luckily A guy was out at the campsite that offered to help my boyfriend get it down. A strap would have been nice. We called the number he gave us and said we were at the dam, to come pick us up. He said paddle down to a bridge and he'd be waiting. We waited for 30 Min without any sign, then called. He said he'd be there soon. Another 30 min, For an hour total and then someone showed up in a van. Finally. Horrible experience that could have turned out with someone getting badly injured. read more

Imagine if a bunch of stereotypical surfer dudes decided to open a business. Young guys who just want to go with the flow, are oblivious, and disorganized. Not a good way to run a company. We had reserved a cabana three weeks ago for my friend's birthday. Our goal for the day was to just relax: hang out along the river under a shaded canopy, rent some paddle boards and kayaks, and have fun with our kids. We arrived before noon, and it was nearly impossible to find someone to help us. We overheard an employee saying that they'd already rented all the paddle boards, kayaks, and canoes for the day, so that option was out. We were still going to have a good day, chilling out, and playing in the water with our personal floats. It turns out that they had overbooked the cabanas. Logically, you'd think that the people who booked first would get preference. Nope. I don't think they even had a list of who booked the cabanas, or when they were booked. Some people tried to help us, but they gave us the kitchen table and chairs (covered in cobwebs) from the nearby house, and a cheap tent instead of cabana. When my friend (birthday girl who made the reservation) complained, she was told that they didn't need people with her attitude on their property. Things deteriorated from there. The cops were called, and we were forced to leave. Three couples in their 40's (TX State alumni) with their kids are not exactly the kind of people who get kicked out of businesses. They let a bunch of 20-somethings with tons of beer stay, but I guess they were more chilled out than us. read more

I took a kayak lesson taught by Ben, and it was awesome! He is very good at explaining the techniques, and critiquing so you learn them correctly. He is a world class athlete, yet is humble, patient, and gracious. The place is perfect. The zip lines, cabanas, and swimming area just make it a great place to hang out for a while. The San Marcos is such a beautiful river. The business seems pretty busy, so it took a couple of tries to connect in order to schedule my lesson, and I waited for him to address a few things with other patrons before my lesson started. The staff at the shore let me know about the delay, and were very courteous. These were minor inconveniences, and were eclipsed by the great time I had. I will definitely be taking my kids for lessons soon! read more

PLEASE READ!!! The worst customer service I ever experienced. For my wife's birthday we reserved a package deal several weeks in advance that included a cabana, access to kayaks, and paddle boards - thanks to the incompetence of the owner himself, a fellow named Ben, he managed to give it all away before we could arrive. Being reasonable adults, we tried to talk to him about the mix up, but he proceeded to demonstrate a level of ineptness that I've never seen in my life. Rather than speak to us as adults, he walked by us choosing to ignore us instead of addressing HIS mistake - next thing we know, he's calling the police to remove us from the premises, without any explanation - we never even got to speak with him! Coincidentally there was another group experiencing the same thing! The San Marcos police were awesome; in fact they actually sided with us as they said the owner was acting unreasonable. It's true, I felt like I was back in elementary school with "the kid" that brought the football to the playground, and suddenly wants to change the rules because he can't handle the situation. Mr. Ben acted as though we were the ones that inconvenienced him. If you are considering this place, I advise that you take caution and read some of the other reviews - this was just a cabana rental! Unfortunately this business has something that everyone wants - river access, so you have a situation where he'll probably never really suffer for his unprofessionalism, inability to be organized, or cleanliness (busted up dirty kayaks and crap was all over the side of the office...actually it's a shack). I really wanted to give this place another try, but the owner doesn't seem interested. 1) we made a reservation for two people whitewater kayak with instructions. ($150). When we got there, the owner was nice and invited us in the building. According to him, the building was flooded few years back, but it didn't seem like they were making any effort to remodel or trying to make this place more presentable. Okay, that was the first impression but I did not take any stars off since I knew many factors contribute to this. Which was fine, but the video was 45 minutes long. Seriously? Repeatedly the same stuff too. (We just wanted to have a fun one day trip getaway from Austin, not going any further into becoming kayak experts.) 3) after the video, we were everywhere looking for the owner. The owner was not there. We waited another 30 minutes, still did not see his shadow. Yeah it was kinda rude we left, but we didn't want to waste more time there. (We barely got a day off to have "fun"). 4) about five hours later, he texted me said he went out to run errands and wasn't able to come back in time. This is ridiculous. 5) we gave another chance, but he took a long time to reply our texts. Who knew if he will bail again? Who knew if we will waste another day. This place sucks! They give no direction. We went on an "hour trip" it was suppose to be a loop. We were told the river makes a loop and it real easy to get back up stream to Olympic Outdoor Center. Not the case at all, we made our loop and had to drag out kayaks up a creek. When we did make it back to the river there was no way we could paddle back up stream to Olympic Outdoor Center. So we had no other choice but to kayak to Martindale. A 4 hour float that comes to a very dangerous dam that no one warned us about. We got lucky and meet some guys that helped us over the dam with a rope they had because they knew the dam was there. To say the least this trip could have been alot better with some direction. We just ended a day at one of the cabanas and had an blast! If you are looking for a no frills, laid back experience, you'll be fine. Yes there are bugs and mud but it's outdoors, next to a river - not sure what other reviewers expect. It's like ha going out in someone's backyard. The zip line, role swing and other activities are backyard DIY projects so it's an "at your own risk" type of place but we can handle ourselves and loved every minute. We had a 5 person cabana, rented a paddle board, fished, swam, grilled and just relaxed. The staff was friendly and we had no problems finding it. It's amazing that this little slice of green, crystal clear heaven is In the middle of a city! Our kids asked if we had anything like this back home, I wish we did! read more

This was an amazing adventure! My family and I had a blast as first-time kayakers. Ben was such a great guide, helped us when we got stuck and provided us with beautiful pictures. This is a pretty awesome place. They have rope swings, decks to jump off of into the river, a bunch of covered areas on the side of the river to hang out for the day, a zip line, and more... Went with my girl-friends on a girls trip and had such a blast! He was so knowledgeable. He was very patient and made sure we were safe.

Took the kids out there for spring break March 20th 2019. It was a group of about 10 of us with eight being teenagers. Was a beautiful outdoor space!! Very serene. We rented two canoes the two gentlemen working the river were very polite and patient, a lot more than I was . Kids had an amazing time swimming and using the swing and rope swing. I believe they went over and Beyond to make sure we had a great experience. They also helped us with tips and pointers being that we weren't from the area. I would definitely recommend if you want more of a one-on-one experience. There were several people kayaking and everyone looked like they were having a great time. A super friendly dog on property Will definitely return. They have guided Night Time Tours with a clear canoe that will lighted, I definitely look forward to that experience. read more

Our expectations were low, and the experience was exceedingly worse. The positive reviews must be friends, because this whole set up is sketchy. We pulled up, wandered down to find an employee, saw the aluminum ladder against the tree leading to the 'zip line', looked at each other, and drove on to Schlitterbahn. Such a fun experience! We decided to do Stand Up Paddling. Make sure to check Groupon out first to see if there are any coupons! Very beautiful, FRESH, and CLEAR water!! Super easy to find your way if you actually pay attention to your surroundings. There were three small rapids, the first one was the most difficult but the other two were simple and smooth. The owner is very friendly and experienced passed olympian. He was extremely knowledgable and made the trip so much better. The trail took about 3 hours with many stops along the way to jump off and go for a swim. We were visiting San Antonio from New Jersey and this was definitely one of the best things we did. Ben (owner) claimed he is 'defined by truth' so everything I will state about my terrible experience will be completely based on facts that can either be confirmed via screen captures of text messages or witnesses. I booked my birthday celebration with out-of-town guests at this location 3 weeks prior to the event. I called first and then confirmed via text. That day I texted Ben to let him know that 2 of my guests would be arriving before me. He responded, "ok". My friends waited over 30 minutes to talk with someone. They witnessed the staff issuing a cabana to a group that did not have a reservation. When my friends mentioned our reservation, they were told there are no cabanas left. No picnic tables. No activities. No grill. None of the things promised and paid for were available. Cameron, the only helpful person we encountered, brought a tent and pulled some old table for us, placing it to the side under a tree. Ben was there briefly, issued no apologies and quickly vanished with no further communication. When I was notified nothing we reserved was available, I was understandably frustrated. I asked the person who answered the phone what happened to my reservation and in a very snarky voice, he responded, "As you can see, I have 30 people I am trying to accommodate". I responded, "No, I cannot see that. I am not there yet." I then said, "Did you not write my reservation down? Did it get lost?" I never raised my voice, never cursed, never said anything derogatory. I was stern, but not rude. He said - and here is where it gets interesting - "I would be happy if you did not come. You are already making a scene. (Reminder: I WAS ON THE PHONE!) We do not need people LIKE YOU on our property." I responded, "I will be right there." I then proceeded to text him and tell him that I needed an owner or manager there when I arrive. Little did I know the extremely unprofessional, unapologetic, unkind person on the phone WAS the owner. When we arrived, we encountered a rusty gate held up by large rocks blocking the driveway to the parking area. MY SWEET FRIENDS were hauling the rocks and moving the gate, PER INSTRUCTION by a staff member. This is important because later he told the police we took down his gate without permission. (yep - the cops were called - the story gets juicer from here. Keep reading!) When Ben finally showed up, I walked up to him. He asked if I was the person on the phone. I confirmed I was. He said, "I said you were not permitted on my property." and then immediately called the cops and said I was refusing to leave. When I asked why he was calling the cops, he motioned to my face and said, "Because of this!" I was not yelling, not aggressive, not cursing. I had barely gotten two words out. When the cops came, I was told that I was going to have to leave because this was his property. The police officer was kind and compassionate. He had to follow the letter of the law, but also made it known that he believed me. He even asked Ben to move the rusty gate and the rocks that he had reassembled, blocking us IN! Ben actually directed us to drive around the gate, in the grass and onto a sidewalk to get out. The police officer told him "To move his crap." and we started to gather all of our kids and stuff. I followed up with a text to Ben stating if he would have only apologized for messing up my birthday reservation this all would have gone an entirely different direction. His response floored me. He said that "we are different than you and we cannot read the minds of people like you." He said he was defined by TRUTH. He then proceeded to tell me - and I am not even making this up- "when you accept what is, your birthday will become all it can be." Let it be known, the first time this man laid eyes on me was literally seconds before he called the cops on me. He knows absolutely nothing about me but, with undeserved judgment, said he does not need people LIKE ME on his property. Ben may be a great person. He is most likely a skilled kayak instructor. He is not a good business owner and, based on the reviews on Yelp!, he is extremely unprofessional and unorganized. I encourage him to get a manager or someone with customer service and organizational skills. He is highly judgmental and rash for someone claiming to be such a 'humanitarian'. He does not take responsibility for his mistakes. I assume that he dismissed me and my family because the group of 30 paid more than I did with my Groupon. Integrity flew out the window at that point and it was easier to forcefully get rid of me, my friends and family than to risk a potential scene and lose the money he made on the bigger group. Awful experience, Ben said he'd be there, waited half hour no show. Ben texted and said just get in and he'll meet up later........... Absolutely not, I'm assuming he would not pick us up if he can't even be there to rent us the kayaks. Map of the river was a piss poor sketch on a marker board. It was fun but it's only a good thing if you know your way around the river. We ended up getting lost & couldn't get a hold of him... then some sweet lady brought us back because we ended up on her property (it was getting dark) I felt really bad because she said it happens a lot and she wished this guy gave better directions. read more

After buying a Groupon for the Cabanas, I called and called and they 1) wouldn't answer 2) would tell me they would call me back and never did or 3) would tell me to text them which they wouldn't reply to either. Poor customer service for sure!! read more

I have rented kayaks here for friends and the service is pretty good.....when you can reach them. They often call back, but not always, and if you go by their place, they might or might not be there. If it werent for the reliablility issue I'd give them the other star. read more

Cabana rental has anyone rented a Cabana???? On their website it says group of up to 5 people $95 each. Full-day private Cabana rental with complementary activities for up to 5 people. $95 each Cabana or $95 each person??? $10 hour for kayak rental. read more

Ben is great with the kids. The summer camp was exactly what we needed. I felt like they were in good hands. They taught safety upfront. Great ratio too. We took the Lake Austin course. Bought the Groupon and used it to take my family on a Father's Day adventure. We were the first ones there on a Saturday morning and the signage was a little difficult to tell were we were supposed to be but it didn't take long to figure it out. It was a great place for the kids to get an idea of what swimming in moving water was like. They ended up getting comfortable with it very quickly. They were jumping in and jumping off the swings and rope in no time. We canoed kayaked and paddle boarded. They kindly even let us rent the paddle board for a 1/2 an hour. This was great for me as I have Lupus and can't handle it for too long. The shelters kept me out of the sun and dry because it rained too. We were welcome to stay and enjoy the rest of the afternoon after the rain. They had grills so we could make hamburgers for lunch and help us carry our stuff in. We also briefly met the owner.
