I cannot say enough about Dr. Chavez in Sayulita! During a mid-February family vacation (we were there Feb 13-20, 2016), my husband woke up aching and with tremendous joint pain. We walked down the hill into Sayulita centro to ask around and were immediately directed to this little pharmacy/ doctor's office-clinic on Manuel Navarette close to the beach (between Calle Gaviota & Delfines). Dr. Chavez, who speaks excellent English, gave hubby a thorough check-up, assessed him as having walking pneumonia, and then prescribed (and filled) all the necessary meds. He asked us to return the next day so that he could (free of charge) do a follow-up to ensure all was well. All this cost us ~ $45 out of pocket, and I am now a big believer in the economies of the Mexican health care system!
But when Dr. Chavez really saved us was the next day... in the middle of the night, our very petite 5yo started violently vomiting and was unable to keep down anything, including liquids, for the rest of the night. Early the next morning, after a sleepless and worry-filled night (I started making mid-night phone calls, but without a car and no clinics picking up, we weren't really sure what to do so I just walked around our rental with my daughter dozing on my shoulder), we carried our weakened little girl down the hill to Dr. Chavez. When we arrived, Adrianna, one of his pharmacists, was just opening up shop and she said it would be an hour before the doctor would arrive. I quickly explained the situation in my broken Spanish, and she called Dr. Chavez who arrived immediately. Food poisoning was deemed to be the culprit. To cut the story short, Dr. Chavez took good care of my little one- she was extremely dehydrated so we spent 6 hours on the couch in the back of his clinic while they pumped fluids & meds through an IV to get our little one back to health. He and his staff made sure to take care of everything: entertaining an extremely bored little girl (once she started feeling better), and making all the arrangements with my travel insurance so that I didn't have to worry about a thing (or see a bill). At the end of our stay, after filling all the necessary prescriptions, he even drove us back in his personal vehicle to our rental. He even provided me with his personal cellphone number and an invitation to call, even in the middle of the night, if needed. He wanted to see our LO the next day and she got a clean bill of health: 100% back to normal. For the rest of our stay after, our little girl insisted on detouring to Dr. Chavez's clinic everyday on the way to the beach to say hello (and pick up a lollipop-- or two, LOL!) to the kind dr!
It was a scary experience for sure (foreign country, middle of the night, our precious child ill), and I'm not sure what we would have done without the kindness of Dr. Chavez! We are forever grateful to him!!
