Weeks of searching online led us to Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast. Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast is a 1750s log home that sits on a 100-acre farm outside Harrisonburg, Virginia. The house retains its original rustic charm, with hand-hewn beams and bluestone chimneys. The owners have made tasteful renovations over time, too- digital thermostats, glass walk-in showers, and WiFi. There are wide-open views around the B&B. On any given morning, you might catch a glimpse of a cow, a deer, or the friendly farm cat, Maple. There are lovely rolling hills in the distance. It's quiet and peaceful. You'd never realize that a city of 51,000 people is only ten minutes away. It was everything we'd hoped to find. Since we only anticipated about 40 guests, we qualified for Silver Lake's intimate wedding package. That package allowed us to rent all six of the B&B's guest rooms for our wedding party and parents. We were able to hold our wedding ceremony and reception on-site. Weather permitting, the ceremony would be held outside in front of a beautiful arbor overlooking the hills. We'd have our reception under a large tent in the backyard. After confirming the cancellation policy a few dozen times, we booked before we ever set foot on the property. The owners stopped responding after we signed a contract. Weeks went by. We repeatedly left voicemails and sent e-mails, and no response. Finally, our wedding planner had enough and visited the venue. That's when we learned the owners we booked with had sold the B&B. The new owners were taking the reins and would contact us soon. Undoubtedly, this was an anxious time for us. In hindsight, it was the best thing that could've happened. The new owners, Ben and Hannah, contacted us a couple of weeks later. They apologized profusely for the confusion and promised us an extraordinary experience. They delivered on this promise in spades! Since taking over, they made many improvements to the property we enjoyed for our wedding day. We're grateful for their efforts and excited to see their continued progress! Ben recently refinished the front porch. It's a welcome and comfortable place to sit in a rocking chair on a chilly morning with a cup of hot coffee and a book. Their dining room features a giant, exquisite dining table that Hannah artfully decorates each season. It's a perfect place to enjoy a hot, filling breakfast and forge new friendships. Lastly, there are guest books in every room and the main dining room. We enjoyed reading about previous guests' stories and experiences. Hopefully, future guests will enjoy reading about ours! Ben and Hannah worked seamlessly with our wedding vendors to arrange on-site visits and discuss logistics. They communicated constantly and accommodated every reasonable request. We are so grateful that a twist of fate allowed us to meet them. They politely stayed inside for our wedding ceremony, but we insisted they join us for our reception under the tent in their backyard. They cooked and cared for us for days; the least we could do was offer them the same treatment. We are still determining when we'll return to Virginia, but we will undoubtedly stay at Silver Lake Bed and Breakfast when we do. We know we'll leave with full bellies and hearts. We are seniors and we reserved a room with a couch so that we could sit comfortably. Since we were traveling with a pet they would not give us the room ww reserved. We told them that our cat stays in the crate, they didn't care. The front desk person told us that a cat destroyed a couch so they don't allow pets in rooms with couches, which is odd because there's a chair, which a cat could also destroy. Sadly there were no other rooms anywhere close by, we were stuck. The room we got had one kind of comfy chair and a plastic folding chair. The rug was dirty and the room smelled like cigarettes, we told the front desk, their solution, spray Zep Cleaning spray, we told them no, because then the room would smell cigarettes and cleaning spray. The beds are so high they were hard to get in and out of, and the light fixtures between the beds looked like they were ready to fall off the wall. We left at 5:30am, we saw someone setting up for breakfast and we told her we were checking out and as we left the key at the counter, she nodded. Later in the day we called because we didn't get an invoice, we told the person who answered the phone that we were disappointed with our short stay and he said, we don't have a complaint, instead of saying, I'm so sorry to hear that. He said he would send it again, we are still waiting.

Our tour guide (I forget her name - so sorry) was amazing. She was knowledgeable and mixed historical content with geological content. The fact that experts from The Smithsonian came here to collect the artifacts (both Native American and Civil War) and authenticate several signatures (I believe from further research I did and then saw at the site, they cataloged the signatures as well) gives this site authenticity. For anyone that is into history, just the thought that you are standing in a place where Native Americans were before Europeans came to this continent AS WELL AS where Civil War soldiers etched their name for future generations, this is a MUST SEE. Is it pricy? Sure. But I give grace there. These caverns have been owned by the same family (they are on the 10th & 11th generation) since the original Harrison family acquired the land in 1748 by a land grant from King George. This isn't a gov't owned site. And from what I have seen and read, this family is dedicated to maintaining the integrity of the caves. That can't be cheap. And I will say, it's worth it for the history alone. That is what sets it apart from all the other caverns in the Shenandoah valley. Could the gift shop be better? Sure. If you have helpful suggestions for improvement, let them know. They are all incredibly friendly. Don't wait and just complain in a review, We will recommend a visit here to any and everyone who is in the area seeing the sites. In fact, this cave is still being explored and new rooms and spaces are being discovered. Our guide told us they are working on adding a new room to the tour. So do we anticipate we'll be back when in the area again? Absolutely!

What I liked was being able to taste a flight of one-ounce of everything they have on hand (to taste). The pours were still on the generous side, and my wife and I comfortably shared one flight. It's good we shared because we weren't thrilled with any of the wines offered. On the plus side, they are only minutes away from a Buc-ee's! It's a chance to at least pick up some jerky that might pair well with some of their lavender-leaning wines. If this were a standalone vineyard, the rating might have been a bit lower. However, the restfulness of the surrounding farm made for an OK experience that we have no desire to repeat.

The 125 acre urban arboretum "provides all students and community members with an outdoor classroom, a forested haven that is home to a rich oak-hickory habitat of flora and fauna, flowering gardens, and native wildflowers." The arboretum is open from dawn to dusk 365 days a year, and has free admission. (That said, I encourage you to support the EJC by becoming a member). We enjoyed walking on the 0.9 easy loop trail, passing through or near the family garden, the oak-hickory forest, fern valley, the pond, and more. Being late October, there weren't any flowering plants, but it didn't matter. There are restrooms, family restrooms, a water fountain, picnic area, a few benches, and an information kiosk. There are also three free parking areas on University Blvd, all with handicap parking spaces. We parked in the largest R5 lot. The garden and paths are well-maintained and enjoyed by a variety of users -- students, people walking their leased dogs, and older folks getting in some gentle exercise. I had only two disappointments -- (1) I so enjoyed the arboretum that I wish it were bigger! (2) can hear some traffic noise, but I guess you'd have to expect that in an urban garden. We look forward to returning when next in Harrisonburg!

While the streambed running through it was dry, it had the insect population of a wetland and I struggled to stop and be still at any point during my exploration. The site has two small parking lots and a variety of attractions, including extensive play facilities for the pre-college crowd. Most of the other attendees, however, appeared older than college students. There were certainly some interesting sights to be seen, and no charge to get in.
