My husband found James on Nextdoor. He came to our home to give us a bid for a simple gutter cleaning. Once he got up on the roof, his entire story changed. He insisted our gutters were "shot" (his exact words), claimed there was corrosion we "couldn't see from below," and said they needed to be replaced immediately. He then pushed for a $750 deposit upfront, with another $575 due after, claiming it was needed for materials. My husband was ready to write a check, but thankfully I told him to wait a few days and think it over. When we asked James for photos of the alleged damage, he said he couldn't provide any. When we asked for his license, which he claims in his posts that he has, he repeatedly made excuses and never provided it. Shortly after that, he completely stopped responding. That's when I started digging--and what I found was extremely disturbing. There was nothing on the BBB website, but a search through the county superior court records showed a long and troubling history, including multiple lawsuits, restraining order & domestic violence, and even an active warrant. This is not someone who should be knocking on doors in our community. After seeing this, my husband showed me James' Yelp, Angi, and Google reviews, and the pattern was undeniable. Multiple people report the same behavior: demanding deposits for "materials," then disappearing once the money is paid. Another man named Jefe recently came forward stating James took his money as well. It escalated to the point where James had to secretly return the money by leaving it under Jefe's car tire. Another woman named Valerie mentioned her elder parents gave James a deposit of $500 to purchase materials only for James to ghost them and stop answering. That alone should tell you everything. When people--including us--started commenting and sharing experiences on Nextdoor, James deleted the posts. He then messaged me pretending not to know who I was, saying, "Do I know you?"--despite having been inside our home. Completely unprofessional and dishonest. We ultimately hired Peninsula Exterior Cleaning, who inspected the gutters and confirmed they are in great condition and won't need replacement for another 10 years. They even provided photos showing there was absolutely nothing wrong. Please, please do your research before hiring someone. James is untrustworthy and falsely advertises that he's a licensed contractor with years of experience. Jeff, Valerie, Mark, several others and I have been taking legal action against james. James tried to take funds over $300+ from Jeff until Jeff started threatening to take him to court etc. James took funds from elderly people over $500+ and will not return to do the work. I have had a very similar experience with James, took a deposit over $1,000 and gave me a bunch of excuses why he couldn't do to the job instead make me payments. He's completely unreliable and plays it up like he's a novice knows it all. He's going through legal issues, blocked people once he's caught but has the nerve to keep posting ads throughout Nextdoor and Facebook, a selfish unprofessional man. He lies about his name, gives out false numbers, and constantly changes his business name especially when he's caught messing up jobs or taking large portions of a deposit but won't return to do the work. He's gotten several reviews on Nextdoor that reveal his true identity and the thief that he is. On google, Angie's list they tell you the same thing. He's a serial con artist that has been taking money from people for awhile now. Do not recommend him or his services. RE-EDITED: james is a scammer who has done this for decades taking deposits from people and never returning to do the work or simply not doing the job correctly. I would not recommend his services. He took over $1,200 to install downspouts and a gutter. It's been over 5 weeks and excuses on why he can't do the job and return money. Completely unreliable and unprofessional. He's not interested in building trust or relationships; he's just looking for a quick payout. We are now in the process of taking legal action. To make matters worse, he's claiming people are posting "false pages" and "fake reviews"-- please trust the reviews and trust the terrible person that he is. James initially comes across as friendly and professional, but my experience tells a different story. After requesting over hundreds of $ upfront for materials, he stopped responding and failed to start the job. When I followed up, I was met with a series of excuses, and ultimately he disappeared altogether. I've since learned this has happened to others as well, and I'm no longer hesitant to share what happened. To my knowledge, James does not hold any professional license to operate, and I would advise anyone to proceed with extreme caution. although this business has been abandoned, the owner continues to scam people out of up front cash. His victims are all over Monterey County. Do not engage with this soulless person who steals money from honest elders living off of social security. he claims to place bird deterrents and clean solar panels, but asks for money up front and then ghosts these poor elderly couples. read more
