We drove into town late (9:40) and were in search of places still open to grab some grub to eat at the hotel when we checked in. After reading the great reviews of their food and looking at the menu (and on their website) we were excited to get something that wasn't fast food. Told by a lovely barkeep that all they had were their late night menu - wings, cheese curds and fries. They had lost their cook, and hence no more fish tacos, chicken parm sandwich, etc. I ordered all 3 items, half wings with garlic parm and half boom boom, cheese curds and jazzed fries. Food came out very quickly and with a smile. The one star is for the friendly barkeep/cook. Food, very meh. Enough said. Perhaps inform the unsuspecting hungry customer that your menu isn't available- on Yelp or on your website. I mean, it's a bar after all, I suppose, and not a restaurant. And this'll teach me to read the dates on all those food reviews on Yelp! (It looked like a great place to hang and shoot some pool and listen to decent music. Just don't expect 90% of the food menu to be available.) read more

The hand battened pickles were delicious! Lightly breaded and perfectly cooked. My husband ordered the grilled chicken salad. He enjoyed the olives, peppers and fresh ingredients. My fish tacos were outstanding. Worth the drive off I 70. We will come again! Fun college atmosphere. read more

This place was good. We started with the onion strings on the appetizer section. They were delicious and lightly battered. There was more than enough for a family of four to share and have leftovers. I had the chipotle cream cheese burger. It was also great. Spicy, but flavorful and not overly spicy. Just enough where you might need sip here and there to cool your mouth off. The home made french fries were the best. I love real fries. My kids had the chicken strips and were satisfied with the freshness and size of them. I tried one and it was perfectly cooked and not the kind you get out of a box. Finished with the fried Oreos. They would have been excellent but a little bit of the batter was still gooey in the middle so it kind of scared me, maybe they were made with eggs? Semonila?? This place is very close to FHSU. Depending on your thoughts... that's a perk, or not. We went on Wing Night (Wednesday). It was very busy. No appetizers are available on Wednesday's because all the fryers are making all-you-can eat wings. I had the buffalo sauce, it was good. Garlic Parmesan were amazing. The ambience is that of a typical small town college bar. The seating was nice and the patrons friendly. Service was typical of a Hays eating establishment so no real surprise. My water was unexpectedly kept full and I never had to ask. Every restaurant has their "thing" that differentiates and establishes their uniqueness. At On The Rocks it seems to be their cheap paper napkins and plastic utensils. My suggestion is to stop at any fast food joint in town and pick up your own before hand. Ordered the hot wings as an appetizer. They came roasted, not fried or battered with an excellent taste. We enjoyed them and I imagine that serving them as a complete "3 piece wing" justifies the $13 price for a 6 wings. Tried to think of a nice way to phrase this, but the burgers are horrid. My wife & I ordered the blackened blue cheese burger and the green chili burger medium rare. They were both burnt beyond recognition. This wasn't an issue of medium v medium rare. BOTH were Charcoal-Charlie burnt to a crisp. Frankly I was shocked that any half decent restaurant owner would let it out of the kitchen. When I mentioned this to our waitress, she simply looked at us with this typical gaunt stare of a genuine Hays native and walked away. No comment, no questions, and no offer to replace them. My "buffalo chips" were tasty, fried and seasoned to perfection. At $2.99 I'm not sure the 12 chips I received were worth the price. The beer was typically "restaurant cool" but not cold. Overall this wasn't a good experience. Fortunately On The Rocks has a liquor license and an ample amount on college students to cover their kitchen. Wings, 2 beers, and 2 uneatable burgers racked up an astonishing $45 tab. read more

We were told that all good is made fresh, not prepackaged or frozen and the popular chicken fried steak is made with steak, not ground beef. I hope to be back soon to try it. The first thing I noticed after setting down was the filthy front windows. I ordered the special philly cheese steak and fries for $9.99, the meat was tough, grissley and fatty. The service was a little slow, had to ask for a knife and fork. Was charged $10.99 for the meal, the server said the price had gone up and they forgot to tell her, they must have forgot to change it on the special board until I mentioned it. FHSU alumni living in CA now. I was in town for a wedding and went to On The Rocks to meet friends for dinner and drinks. I loved this place when it was G. Willikers and love it even more now! The food is made fresh to order, nothing was frozen like a lot of places in Hays. I highly recommend the Rocks Chicken Sandwich, Hot Ham Sandwich and Fried Mushrooms. The updates made since the last time I was here look great, love the TV placement! The staff is friendly and provided great service. Wow, very neat, clean little place. Fiancé found this place on yelp as we are traveling to Oklahoma so we thought let's check it out, best decision of our road trip. Fiancé and I ordered spicy Bloody Mary's and damn they were great tasting, maybe even close to Best we have ever had, amazing. Now the food, I seriously think everything must be local grown and raised as delicious as all the food we had was amazing as well. Myself, fiancé and our teenage son all ordered something different but we all tried each other's sandwiches and well their is not one bad thing about this little place. I flew in from the west coast for the FHSU homecoming football game. I decided to drop in to "On the Rocks" for a burger. This restaurant was my second home when I was a student back in the 70s. I ordered and sat at the bar, the owner and I got into a conversation regarding politics. I know this can be a dangerous proposition but I didn't know what I was getting into. The owner was extremely passionate in his hatred of President Trump and me being a Trump supporter I tried hard to not argue but this man's hatred went after me with a vengeance. Finally, I decided to cancel my order and go someplace elsewhere I would not be personally attacked if a political discussion occurred. I was simply astounded that the owner would go after me personally by ridiculing me on how I came to take the position I was taking. I left this establishment very upset. I only hope this doesn't set the tone for the rest of my visit. Right now I feel I'll never ever enter this restaurant ever again and will probably avoid traveling all the way from Seattle to attend my alma mater again. The last impression.....the owner told me he was a smart businessman. Personally, I don't think to attack a paying customer in such a mean and personal way was a very smart business move. I can safely say the 3 or 4 times I planned to eat at this establishment are removed from my itinerary. I paid a lot to travel here only to experience hatred. I can safely say that this is probably my last time in Hays KS. read more

Walked in and was immediately impressed. The atmosphere is inviting and TVs were all places in the right area. Anywhere you sit or stand you get a good view of the tvs. The bartender was very friendly and poured a good drink. After a few I was craving some food. The menu looked good and settled on the hot wings. They were the whole wing! Which I liked cause I feel it locks in more flavor. They were some of the best wings I have had. Good flavor throughout the whole wing and it wasn't just sauce layer on top of the wing. It's sauce and flavor was cooked into the wing. My wife had the chicken sandwich. It came with hand cut fresh fries. The chicken was juicy and the sandwich was tasty. My fiend had the gravy fries and I stole some cause they looked good. Brown gravy over fries just like poutine! I think my friend was mad cause I kept eating them. Overall good place with good food. Specials almost every night. I will be back to try more stuff. read more
