We made a pit stop in Hayes on our roadtrip from Denver to Kansas City earlier this year. We found Vernie's while looking for a lunch spot and were not disappointed. Best milkshake I've had, and wonderful fries and onion rings. My wife had a mushroom and cheese burger and it was great. I had a bacon cheeseburger and found it a bit dry. No lettuce and tomato, but they did put ketchup, onions and pickles. I got some mayo and that helped. Don't be put off by the place's exterior. It's an old drive-in, but they have built a dining area that wraps around the original exterior. read more

Standard Mom N Pop Burger Shop fare. I wish they just had boiled or rolled hotdogs as my kidd wasted her whole hotdog because the "skin tastes like jerky skin". The grilled cheese my kiddo ordered was like a steamed bun with a cheesy middle. She said it was actually pretty good, but had she been younger, that would have also been wasted. The burgers were pretty good! Wish they had better ranch. Maybe I should have asked more questions, but I didn't want to hold up the line. I've been to this quaint mom n pop hamburger joint once. It was a slow day. Atmosphere was 1950s. Server was right on top of things. Prompt and polite. The cheese burger was like dad made. The milkshake was terrific. The only minus was the tiny restrooms. All else 5 stars. read more

Made a lunch stop with the family on our annual trip out to the Ozarks. Solid food, quick service, reasonable prices, and very clean. Stick the the burgers, avoid the chicken. We tried cheeseburgers, fries, ice cream, and chicken tenders. Burgers were juicy and made to order and fries were super hot and crispy. The chicken tenders tasted like freezer pre-made pieces and we're pretty bland. The 50 cent ice cream cones we're a great deal given they are a good size, although just basic soft serve. Total bill for our group of 6 was about $35. The business supports local activities and organizations as well, which is cool. I would stop here again instead of the chain places nearby. read more

We were told by friends that travel the 70 freeway often to make a stop at this place on our way to Kansas City. Thank you to them because it was well worth our time and money. The burgers were served with very fresh lettuce and tomato along with pickles. The onion rings were a real winner in my book. The place had a clean restroom, the service was friendly. We were going to stop by on our way back home, but they are closed on Sunday and Monday. Sorry we missed you on our trip home. read more

Saw the roadside side, the Yelp reviews were positive therefore Vernie's was the place to pick up a somewhat quick hamburger for brunch. First off, you'll notice when possible we try to eat local, and here was another chance. The staff were friendly, took our order real quick and explained what Grebble is (fried sweet'ish dough served with syrup). I ordered the burger with swiss and mushrooms, the husband ordered the cheese burger and fries. I asked for a large water, and waited to have a small cup that a snail could drink in brought to me. Oh no mon frere, this was a huge honking glass full of icy water (clouds part at this point). Food was good, served piping hot, the bun was soft and fresh. Seemed like the fries were not hand cut (frozen) on site (see the South Side in Limon, CO review) which would have been a treat. I saw a couple people order milk shakes, that really looked good. But after we had each consumed our burgers, shared the fries, made a pit stop in the bathroom, and bought a Vernie's t-shirt as a souvenir, it was time get back on the road. Do it again? Sure. But I'd try some of the other places in Hays, KS too. This is a bustling town. read more

On our way to Topeka, stopped at Vernie's. What a fun place to eat! Family owned. The family was working in the kitchen, Vernie's wife and daughter. The shake was made with real ice cream. They serve hamburgers, shrimp, side salads, etc. Very clean. Made my day! Love a surprise when traveling. read more

Stopped here today at it was a great local spot! Pretty basic menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken. No good vegetarian option unfortunately except for salad and fries. The staff was friendly and the food was cooked quickly though. I wish we would have had time for pie and $1 ice cream cones! read more

Solid hamburger joint. I was a bit disappointed they didn't have the green bean dumpling soup on the menu, but apparently it's seasonal and we just missed it. It's certainly the most adventurous thing on the menu. Regardless, the prices were nice and the food was good. I had a standard hamburger and a corn dog. A guest in my party also had the coconut cream pie and it was better than average. Service was nice and fast. It's across the street from Sonic and I would definitely choose this instead. Only slight complaint is that the hot water in the restroom sink was barely flowing at all. read more

Over the years, this has become our regular lunch stop when driving from KC to Colorado. We've been disappointed a couple of times to find it closed (on Mondays or when the whole staff goes on vacation), but It's clearly a favorite of the locals--everyone who walks in seems to know everyone else. Order at the window off a large list of sandwiches etc, find a table and one of the servers brings you the food. Excellent burgers, fries, onion rings and the usual offerings, plus a few that you won't find at the chains: fried pickles, green bean dumpling soup, grebble (look it up). Great malts and shakes, too. It's quite a distance from the interstate but well worth it. read more

I wasn't sure what to order and when I pulled around to the drive thru window there wasn't a menu but I just decided to get a regular cheeseburger, fries, and a chocolate shake. Really expected more from this place considering the other reviews but we were very disappointed. The hamburger was a small precooked frozen dry burger that you heat in the microwave. The mushroom Swiss cheese burger had very little small chunks of onion, open the can mushrooms and tasteless square piece of white cheese that did not look like Swiss cheese at all. The double cheeseburger had the same precooked dry frozen burger, with pickle and tiny bit of ketchup, no lettuce or tomato. We asked for ketchup and received small cup with about 1 tabs of ketchup for the sandwich and fries. The hamburgers came in a very small paper basket that looked like should have been a child's meal with very amount of fries. We asked for salt and pepper and the waitress brought one small packet of each. We got up went to the window to get more ketchup, mustard, salt and pepper and saw some trays with each however the waitress did not tell us we could get our own . The meal cost was $9.50 each for a total of $19.00 for basically kids meals. Will not recommend nor will we visit again during our stay here. read more
