The name "On The Rocks" would have you believe that it is a reference to cocktail making but are you ever so wrong. It is most likely a reference to the crack rock you are on to have to become a regular of this place. On The Rocks redefines what most of us would consider a 'dive bar'. Imagine, if you will, a Well fare line and a Prison roster have sex. They then had a baby who once it grew up mated with a homeless shelter and produced a child. You then have the birth of On The Rocks. I am sure this bar could be a watering hole in the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Deliverance sequel. It brings dive-barrin' and loose moral fiber to a whole new echelon. With that being said, I've been here a handful of times. They only take cash and the drinks are cheaper than a one-legged prostitute in a house of ill repute full of leggy blondes. On the down side ( as if the aforementioned was a plus) you may need a hazmat suit upon entering as I am sure you can catch scurvy from the salty sea Capt sitting beside you. I should know whether or not scurvy is contagious as I am a nurse. Let's just say that scurvy is one of the many diseases that may be caught here. The jukebox is filled with an ear bleeding selection that includes many a Spanish tune. You can cut the smoke with a knife. Even the bartender smoke while pouring your drinks. Train wreck? Yes. But you can't take your eyes away from it. The cast of characters here looks like a police lineup. Oh, the tales they have to tell. When you leave, grab a scouring pad and some Ajax, maybe some bleach and scrub yourself clean. Maybe have a friend do it for you. There's one bartender who cracks jokes as she smokes a cig and grabs drinks for patrons, this isn't a place to dress and impress leave your heels and dress at home. On the Rocks is one of those rare no-frills dive bars located right in the heart of North Beach. It's a narrow bar (where the bar takes up about half the entire space), and has a pool table in the rest of the space. (Although during our visit we learned that the bar acquired a small adjoining space and was modestly expanding. Much like a true dive bar, the place is decorated with an assortment of novelties and smelled a bit like an old cigarette. It also opens at 8AM - which is awesome for anyone wanting a morning drink without the responsibility of ordering brunch with it. Drink prices were excellent, the bartender was a seasoned pro, and our conversations were flowing. It's definitely a locals spot and a great way to beat the heat should you find yourself in the area. I'll definitely make sure to stop back in for a drink when I find myself back in the area. read more

On the Rocks I'm proud to call On The Rocks my neighborhood drinking hole. Of the memories I can recollect from this place, they've been mostly positive albeit somewhat cringeworthy. There was this one time when I tried to have a break dance battle with a nice gay gentleman who was clearly much better than me. Watch out for those quiet wallflowers who look all docile only to be looking for any excuse to smoke your ass on the dance floor. The Goose was flowing and I was winning that night no matter what. It just happened to be my friend and fellow Yelper's, Sharon W, birthday party. The birthday cake was a mostly accurate depiction of her favorite kitty cat companion, Wolfgang. Sadly, I grabbed a handful of "fur" (icing) and proceeded to bust a move on the dance floor, trying to dance with anything and everyone around me. There was cake all over me, my friends and other not-so-innocent bar patrons. I did not win the dance battle and have no idea how I found my way walking home. I woke up with icing in my hair. #duhwinning The bottom line is, the bartenders pour a stiff drink, the prices are right and the juke box is ON POINT. I can't tell you how surprised I was to see everything from honky tonk country to Rupaul's greatest hits on the menu. Wow! What a surprise find on an impromptu trip. This place is great and has an indoor/outdoor feel with the front doors peeled open. We came to this spot knowing that we weren't planning on going out dancing but rather had some decent tunes playing via an app/dollar controlled jukebox. If you want cheap drinks, karaoke and a chill place...go here. Friends and I went to On the Rocks in a Friday night around 10 to find the place still pretty quiet. It has enough space that it doesn't feel crowed even when there are a lot of people in the bar. They have a nice open area so you can sit/ stand outside. They have pool and jenga which are both great when out drinking. They have some seating that isn't at the bar but not a ton. They also offer free karaoke until 3am if you're brave enough! The best part about this place is just out cheap the drinks are. We had shots that were 4 bucks! The crowd is defiantly older and this spot is for sure a locals place but I know we will for sure be back. The biggest downside for me personally was that it is a very Smokey bar. Stopped into On The Rocks on a Thursday evening before heading to a nearby event. I do not believe they serve food, but it is not a place you would really want food from anyway. All I had was a beer before heading to dinner. Quality On The Rocks is a dive that has all the bar standards along with a few specialities. I just had a draft beer and it was exactly what you should be ordering. Watching the bartender it was nothing but whiskey rocks and beers. Quantity Nothing extraordinary about the pour of beer, but it had the correct amount of head and came out ice cold. Value Hard to tell if it was happy hour or if the drinks are just always very affordable. If I had to guess though, I would go with the latter. Ambiance On The Rocks is a small dive bar that is half a block off Collins Ave in North Beach. Although you may not be able to see the sign walking down the sidewalk, you can definitely follow the noise and the smokers to the dark and dingy bar, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. The bar is long, but very skinny, with the bar area taking up the majority of the space. They have stools along the bar and then more stools against the wall, but there is no way people could really sit on each side. Towards the back they have a pool table and also a jukebox machine that was a main attraction. The walls and ceilings are covered with a mix of random decorations, my favorite of which was some sort of Halloween demon decorated in a St. Patrick's outfit. They definitely made sure all holidays were represented. The music was surprising when I entered with modern rap, but it soon shifted to classic rock as could be predicted. Several televisions showed a bunch of sports network, but the televisions looked very outdated and were all sorts of random sizes. I will say despite the amount of people smoking inside I was surprised that it was not that smokey or stinky. Crowd It is not every bar that you walk in before it is even dark out and the majority of patrons should be cut off. However, not every bar opens at the crack of dawn. It was a very beach bum crowd where most people looked like they spent most of their day drinking on a boat. It was also a crowd of older regulars, at least one of which brought his toddler granddaughter along. If anything the crowd was too friendly, everyone having a bit too much fun for as early as it was. Service The bartender was pretty impressive because in addition to making sure every glass was filled, she was smoking, on the phone, and playing pool. Also, her mastery of the crowd was impressive as she was always a step ahead of the drunken patrons who were about to stumble out without paying. Parking There is sporadic street parking in the area along with a pretty good sized public lot just a block away. Free parking in the lot after 6pm is also a fantastic deal, unfortunately that may not work for the early morning drinkers, but they probably should not be driving anyway. Extra On The Rocks is a standard dive bar with some positives and some negatives. Good prices and the ability to avoid a cigarette smell while allowing inside smoking are pluses. Just know what you are walking into and keep your expectations in line. Worth it for a quick drink if in the area, but not really worth a trek. read more

Let me tell you this place is awesome. It has all the qualities you would want from a sports bar. It has TVs, a pool area, and a chess table. Some may say a chess table? I think On the Rocks is a trend setter. I think most accomplished sports bars in the nation will add one within months. That said On the Rocks has a great, almost welcoming atmosphere. The vibe reminds me of The Penguin. Bikers, Business folks, Soccer Moms, Tatt artists. You name it On the Rocks caters to all comers. The last time I was there, about a week ago, I am still glowing from the experience. Recenlty since I was seperated from my whore of an exwife, a kind barkeep was gracious enough to introduce me to a local lady patron. She said she was a 28 year old recent divorcee herself working her way through law school and improv classes. It appears she may be a little older, but I'm still into it. Her financial distress asked me to buy her a kamikaze. Fortunatley the kamikazes only cost 75 cents so the investment is worth it. One of the two shirts I have left in my possesion after the divorce is a shirt with an 8 ball on it. One of the customers challenged me to a pool match. I really am not that great at pool,I just like 8 balls. Needless to say he took me for a hundred bucks and 4 kamikazes. My bad, but I still got my lady friend. When they stopped serving breakfast.... my super cool friend/bar keep H...... (by the way he works the late late night-early morning-late midmoring shift, just ask for H) said it's party time. He and I drank a few beers with the lunch crowd. After a few beers I asked what the name of my new lady friend was and he said Steve. Well you can't win them all. H said he would pick up my bar tab.
